"I requested an estimate and mistyped my contact number. Mr.

"We had overlooked a defect in our downspout drainage system which in turn was a contributing factor in our foundation fracturing and dropping. Before we could get" the foundation fixed, we needed to find someone to correct the drainage problem.
was that person. His bid was the lowest of three and the only one that offered the additional feature of a reasonable price to replace the asphalt portion or our driveway. He promised that he would do the work to our satisfaction and the price would not change, no matter what they ran into after starting excavation. He predicted 2-3 days to complete the job. It was completed at noon on the third day.
's crew consisted of a foreman and three other workers.
did an amazing job at rebuilding the rock wall that had been taken down to
the piping.
had a knack for reinstalling the cement pavers so they were actually more solid than before their removal two days earlier.
had an easygoing sense of humor that is effortless to be around.
was the foreman who responded to my every concern with empathy and a strong commitment to back up
's claim of customer satisfaction. This was particularly important to me (
) on the second day, when I got a little panicked over a couple of mistakes. In both cases, I went to
. He responded professionally and re-excavated to make it right before continuing withthe installation. There was a high degree of respect among the crew, both from
toward the crew and the crew toward
. The unwavering commitment to provide customer satisfactionseemed to be the unifying principle. It was a pleasure to serve them home baked pumpkin bread and soft drinks, but it was obvious that doing so was not the reason we got such good work. :- ) We trust we will never again need these particular services for our home, but we can wholeheartedly recommend
to anyone who might have any such needs.

If the state requires a contractor's license, then he needs to have a license in each state he intends to work in - plus state/local business licenses as applicable.

This does not mean there are not a lot of contractors who cross state lines without proper licensing - the penalties in may cases are not real severe and are just a fine, not criminal, so many take the chance.

As you say - argh  - many contractors are not really businessmen and have zero legal education, so many people get burned.

To overlay, with proper adhesion so it does not peel off, you first need to prepare the surface - typically heavy watercutting or sandblasting for concrete over concrete, or high-pressure presure washing and an asphalt (NOT water based cutback) adhesion coat before asphalt overlay.

Because of the prep cost, a concrete overlay commonly costs more than just tearingit out and replacing it, and if you are replacing it due to cracking and breaking up those cracks will almost always propogate or "reflect" through the new layer too with concrete. Ditto with asphalt overlay, though using a crack-stopper fabric can reduce (but usually not eliminate) that.

If just repairing ice melt/freeze thaw deterioration, a cementatious epoxy overlay can be used, though its life is less (normally) than new concrete. Usually used for limited areas like garage area pad, not entire driveways.

Asphalt overlays over somewhat deteriorated concrete can work well, but if not prepared and high-pressure (about 5000 psi or higher) cleaned to remove ALL deteriorated material, they can peel off because they stuck to deteriorated loose material rather than sound concrete. Again, can cost as much for a 1-1/2 to 2 inch overlay as for a 3-4 inch full replacement by the time you are done, because the prep work is labor intensive.

Even if this is just a surficial deterioration issue, I would talk to several contractors (site visit) about alternatives and let them bid both an overlay and a replacement (or whichever options they are inclined to bid on), then after getting opinions from all three and bids for all options, make your decision. I am pretty confident that total replacement will be both the most recommended and the cheapest, at probably about $2-4/SF for asphalt or 4-6/SF for concrete - commonly nearer the lower than higher range for most jobs and locales. If the overlay and replacement cost is pretty close,I would go with the replacement because overlays over concrete are always somewhat iffy as to how long they will last, especially concrete overlays.

For cost comparison, except in extreme freeze-thaw country, you can figure a concrete drive will last about twice as long as an asphalt one.

the owner came to give us the estimate which had 2 different owners to coordinate. He gave us a fair price and did exactly what he said he would do and when he said he would do it. He paved over a base surface that had been done years before but he said it should be no problem, thus saving hundreds in unnecessary charges. He had 2 rocks to dig up that were causing bumps in the drveway and put on a nice topcoat.

Very professional -- these guys are super courteous and aim to please. Offered sound advice on what we needed and came through on their promises. Give Pat a try -- you won't be disappointed.

and his assistant did exactly what we asked and even had some suggestions. They were here 2 and 1/2 days for a relatively small job but they wanted to make sure the job was perfect and we were happy. The results were wonderful. I would certainly use them in the future.

They took out my old driveway and installed a new one. They put in a firmer base and drainage as well. They did a good job with the service overall. So far, everything has worked out right with the drainage system installed.

The property where I want the service done is a residential duplex that I own and have tenants in. Originally the provider said that this would qualify for the Big Deal but then they said that the property was commercial and wouldn't honor the Big Deal.
- Fizal A.

They removed all the old gravel and graded and leveled the new bed. Much time was spent removing old bumps with the bobcat. We had stone pavers lining the old driveway which we wanted to retain. New base material was spread followed by the hot top application. It looks beautiful and we were extremely pleased with the outcome . It was a pleasure working with Mr.
