Concrete crack creates customer complaint

COMPLAINT: William Armstrong, Cardington, Ohio

"I hired Canaan Concrete of Mount Gilead [Ohio] to install a new porch. I wanted to use red concrete to make it look like slate. However, the concrete cracked in less than three weeks and turned gray.

"In addition, the porch slopes, and the clothesline pole they installed into the concrete is at a 45-degree angle and has no drain hole."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I would like the job to be redone the right way, or I want my money back in full."

"We went to look at the crack in the concrete and discovered someone had dropped a large board onto it, after which they noticed the crack. There is nothing structurally wrong with the patio. When we left, the clothesline was still straight in the concrete.

"We discussed the [porch's] slope with the member, because he no longer wanted steps to come out of his sliding glass door onto the patio. We advised him the only way this could happen was to place that much slope in the patio. He agreed to it.

"As to the color, the concrete is not mixed on-site, and his patio has three layers of sealer on it. The remaining sealer is what gives the patio its look. When we left the job, he was completely satisfied."
