"We have used this company for about 8 years. They are prompt, courteous, polite and always clean up after themselves. From the office staff right down to the workers," they are all wonderful. I would highly recommend this company as well as continue to use them. They are everything you could want in a company.

Sizing the water treatment equipment before purchase is essential, as not all systems will fit in every home, Finn says. (Photo courtesy of Kinetico Water Systems of SWFL)

3 tips to select the best water treatment

Don't overpay for the wrong water treatment system. One highly rated provider offers some tips to help you choose the right system for your home.

Water softeners

Even if your tap water comes from a reservoir, chances are it previously passed through underground caverns where it absorbed mineral deposits. Water with a high concentration of minerals is referred to as "hard" water. It's safe to drink but can harm your plumbing and appliances.

Housecleaning, Water Softeners

Tired of hard water stains clouding your glass shower door? It takes diligence, but it is possible to keep a glass shower door clean. Find out how.

If you can't find a copy of your manual, most local water dealers can help you to identify your equipment, says LeGault. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Brian C. of New York)
Water Softeners

You just bought a home that came with an unused water softener. How do you turn it on? One highly rated provider breaks down the process in five easy steps.

Water softeners are beneficial because they can extend the life of your water-using appliances, plumbing and clothes. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Kevin F. of San Antonio.)

Do water softeners need routine maintenance? Many are fully automatic, but others might need service if there's a noticeable difference in water quality.

You'll notice the difference in your skin, clothes and dishes right away when you switch to soft water, says Knippa. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member David L. of Las Vegas)

I actually just replaced my Pelican Natursoft "water softener" with an more-traditional ion exchange model.  I used the natursoft for a little over 4 years, and I can say it worked as advertised.  When remodeling a while back we decided to get a tankless water heater.  All the documentation indicated that hard water with the tankless heater is a no go.  We had to do somehting, but since I'm lazy (didn't want to deal with the salt or plumbing in a drain) and my wife didn't like soft water, the salt-free model looked attractive.  I too was somewhat skeptical, but the reviews I found looked good, and I know enough about the science of nucleation (I was a material science major in college) to know that what they said made sense, so I bought one.

One thing needs to be made clear - the natursoft system is NOT a water softener!  It contains a media which nucleates some disolved metalic salts out of solution.  These crystals, once formed, remain in the water, and still react with oils, detergents, etc. in the same manner as the disolved salts.  They also continue to form scale wherever water is allowed to evaporate, such as faucet nozels and shower heads. In fact, it's possible that evaporative scaling was even worse than before we installed the system.

Importantly, however, once in crystaline form, these salts do not stick to pipes, or in my case, heat-exchangers.  My tankless heater has a sensor to indicate when it needs to be descaled, and the manual indicates that for my water hardness and hot water use I should have had to descale approximately every 6 months.  In four years with the natursoft the descaleing indicator has never gone off.  For further evidence, when I installed my new softener a few weeks ago, I had to cut sections from the copper pipe on both the inlet and outlet side of the natursoft.  Both sections of pipe were installed at the same time as the natursoft, but while the pipe on the inlet side was green and rough on the inside, the outlet pipe looked and felt like new.

As such, if you want or need a salt-free system for some reason (low-sodium diet for blood pressure, don't like the feel of soft water, can't easily plumb a drain into the softener location, or can't carry heavy bags of salt to the softener), then I can unequivocably recommend the natursoft.  If, like my wife and I today, you want soft water, that feels soft on your skin, creates less soap scum, rinses cleaner in the dishwasher, etc., then the natursoft probably isn't for you.

They were supposed to deliver salt on January 252h at 8 am. I took work off to be here. Waited two hours and no one came. Emailed them the next day and got a response the next day that they would reschedule. I said i was not able to take another day off to wait for them. They claimed it was not their fault I should have waited. I told them the name of the person I spoke with (

Excellent Job and truly PROFESSIONAL..... We recently purchased the home which was built in 1980 and I believe the bathroom exhaust fans were original to the house. I called the office on Monday morning to inquire and the appointment was set up for 2 days after my initial call.

showed up exactly on time. Our home is a split level entry with one bathroom on the main level and one bathroom on the lower basement level. After initial inspection of what was going where they quickly got to work and started on the main level bathroom fan replacement. They laid out drop cloths to help contain the mess from cutting a larger hole in the ceiling plus the mess from the blown insulation from the attic. As one technician worked from the bathroom level the other was up in the attic. I purchased a 130 CFM fan which recommends a 6 inch exhaust pipe and they had all the equipment needed to replace the current 4 inch pipe with a 6 inch plus the new pipe they used is insulated which comes in handy in the winter months up in the attic where it can get below freezing. Just under 2 hours later they had the new exhaust fan completely installed in the main bathroom and everything working perfectly. They even cleaned up EVERY spec of dust created during the process and made sure everything was sealed tightly and flowing properly. Actually even went as far as "fluffing" up the insulation in the attic back to how it was before they started the project. Then it was time to tackle the lower level bathroom fan which I will say has VERY limited access due to the ceiling being completely sheet-rocked and finished.

worked as a team once again and were able to gain access to the old fan from the backside unfinished laundry room but space was very tight given current plumbing fixtures and piping plus the finished sheet rocked ceiling. They must have some magic trick or something because before I knew it they had the old fan out and the new one it place plus everything sealed up and working. They also replaced the outside housing cover that is one the side of the house and made sure everything was working properly plus air tight including caulking around outside housing cover. Then it was on the replacing the dry vent pipe plus upgrading it to the smooth steel type. We had the old flexible type that catches all the lint on ridges. By replacing the dryer vent pipe with the smooth steel type dryer performance has also improved drastically. Total time on site was 4 1/2 hours and I now know who my first call will be to when we need additional plumbing and heating contractor professionals. Super professional service with very knowledgeable people plus left the jobsite cleaner then it was before they arrived. The only issue I had which could be a good thing was it took almost two months to get the invoice.

The product is fine. I have had a lot of trouble with them however including with the billing. The sales process was high pressure and I gave her all my information including my credit card information. The installer fine. They put the whole $1,500 amount on my credit card, which they reversed about four days later. Also, I

’t feel I was given all the information at the beginning such as with the annual maintenance costs, filter timelines and costs, etc.
