"The person who did the work couldn't have been nicer. I think he was overwhelmed with the number of responses to his special on Angie's List. Scheduling" was difficult, but I wasn't in a hurry to have the work done. The quality of work was very good and I was satisfied with the end results.

"
was incredibly helpful and patient with us when selecting cabinets and hardware. He showed us different manufacturers, features and cost" differences. He gave us a good estimate of the arrival and install dates. The installation crew was courteous, professional and made sure the job was done to our satisfaction. Each day the team cleaned up and did not leave any mess. They even mopped the floor when the project was done! A kitchen renovation is a stressful project but
made it as pleasant and easy as possible.

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

The product looks nice. I signed a contract. It was a high pressure sales. Although they deposited my check the next day, this is the fifteen (15) day since I canceled my contract. After several phone calls, I have yet to get my money back, although was told it would be coming. I would not recommend this company. High pressure technique and far too expensive compared it its competitors that I priced. New cabinets were less expensive when I priced them at Lowe's and a cabinet company in Mechanicsburg.

I emailed
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
to schedule an appointment.
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
arrived a few minutes early. However, once he saw what the job was he became rude and unprofessional. He essentially told me that I had wasted his time, and that he could have provided a quote via email rather than driving to my location. I do not know why he would expect customers to let any contractor into their house without having met them first. He didn't stay longer than 5-10 minutes. After he left, he sent me a quote that was 3 times more expensive than any of the other 4 quotes I received. I told him his quote was extremely high, and he brushed it off.
I will not be contacting
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
again and I would not recommend him to anyone, for any job.

It went great.
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is a pleasure to work with. He and his helper show up on time, do beautiful work, are responsive, answer questions, and have seemingly endless patience with anxious or capricious requests. They go above and beyond every day.
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
has a very good eye for design and he will make suggestions, or tell you what will or won't work. There's nothing he can't do.
When I said I'd like the floor trim replaced as part of the hardwood flooring installation (not in original estimate), they trimmed out the floor AND around the windows. They went above and beyond by using a concrete leveler on the bathroom floor to ensure that the tile would stay down. When he noticed a leaking pipe in the basement, he replaced that section of pipe for a very fair labor charge. When I needed the kitchen closed off during construction so curious cats would not get into places they shouldn't, he sheetrocked off the kitchen until everything was closed up -- so it was almost like a "Property Brothers"
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
.
It meant a lot to me that I could give
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
a key, close up the cats and go to work and know that the place was in good hands with trustworthy people. I found that when he tells you something will look great, he's right. When he tells you something won't work, he's right. He's been doing this a long time and really knows his stuff. He takes pride in his work and just as importantly, he ENJOYS it.
I've recommended this company to three people already, all of whom say they'll call him when they're ready to remodel. Most of what I have yet to do in my house is "Honey Do"-type work, aside from a new front walk and replacing the rest of the trim work. But if he has time to do this, you bet I'll hire him again. Highly, highly recommended!!

The contractor is a con man and does not actually do much of the work as he stated he would do. He has a crew of men who barely know how to preform their jobs. A drywalled/painter in our house ate our food, broke our microwave, destroyed the finish on our kitchen cabinets and refrigerator when he spilled paint on the cabinets and refrigerator, broke off a drawer front and scratched a bar area faucet, plus damaged our kitchen floor and our wood floors. The contractor took off cabinet crown molding and destroyed the integrity when I demanded he put it back in place. The men drank on the job and stole my husbands beer. The contractor got the wrong color paint color originally, then he watered down the rest. He was always pulling the men off the job which lead to the job taking longer than needed. Every time I turned around he needed more money. He did not oversee the job throughly which lead to things being done over many times and he charged triple due to poor business practices. He was given the bathroom remodel because he stated he was a great tiler. What a mistake! The tile work is very poorly installed, the shower faucet is two inches off center, the tile were not properly mapped out, the decorative tile installed poorly and the tub and toilets which were new are all scratched along with the shower head. The new door was all marked up and poorly installed. They also did not have the knowledge to install the proper trim tile and did not estimate well for the correct amount of tile needed. The doorway threshold is not installed correctly and may crack soon( the grout already has cracked and is crumbling and a spacer shows through were he grouted it in place. He used big grouting lines to cover all his mistakes and wouldn't use caulking to seal certain water areas. I finnaly kicked him out of our house because he never finishes anything and/or breaks many things without repairing. When he left a real tiler came in an was amazed. I had a plumber repair the bathroom toilet because it was leaking and the valve was leaking. I had payed for a new valve and did not get one like was stated. I had an electrician in to correct his electrical work. The windows are all painted over and there were many areas not painted and many areas where the paint is very thin coverage. A window that the glass was replaced was nailed shut. My husband and I counted at least 15 nails after we finally were able to open it. We are in the process of repainting all inside areas due to poor painting, wrong finishes, or I can't afford to have anymore areas scratched on our wood floors. He also never measures windows right. It took atlleast four times before the right size were installed and four monthes with boards over our windows. They also don't protect their areas well.. They trashed our yard and never cleaned up and left garbage every where and we could not use our garage for four months! The list of what they did wrong is even longer, but I will stop here. He is dishonest and a con man! Be aware and do not use this mans services or his men!

was top-notch from our first meeting. He arrived on time and was quite professional in drawing up his bid. We had contacted two other contractors from Angie's List and his was the lowest bid. There was some difficulty in getting a style of countertop to match the existing countertop on the other side of the kitchen.

kept me abreast of what was happening as soon as he received word. We ran into some unexpected structural issues after the old cabinets were ripped out but

creatively found a solution that worked well. Work was still completed in 3 days despite the problems we encountered.

SUMMARY:
There is a saying that contractors come in one of three varieties: they’re either competent, they’re crooks, or they
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
’t know what they
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
’t know. I am not totally sure which variety of contractor Family & Friends is, but overall, my impression is that I saw that they could do good work, but because they are so overbooked (I assume), they do work in a counter productive order, make some poor decisions and end up doing sloppy work. Their work is functional, but aesthetically defective, which made me feel like I had paid retail prices for outlet quality goods.

PROS:
-The office is easy to deal with and very responsive and communicative.
-
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is patient and easy to talk to and takes charge of an issue personally.
-The guys on the crew were sweet as pie and I felt super safe with them in my house.
-F&F would do anything I asked them to with reasonable change order additions to the original quote.
-F&F fixed some small mistakes with no complaint (window sills re-built to my specifications, cheap thermostat replaced with the high end one quoted for).
-Gave me a very small discount when I complained of some issues.

CONS:
-Took a lot of effort to schedule a quote and start work—six months total.
-I felt like I had to seriously oversee their work every night and push them to do things thoroughly and properly.
-They damaged their own work and my house.
-Sloppy plumbing, carpentry and finish work.
-Questionable quotes.
-Did not provide an adequate discount for their errors.

CONS in detail:
-When a major structural issue was discovered, F&F’s solution was quick and cheap—cut 3” into a joist on a 5’ span and just seal up a major rift to the outside. They discouraged me from contacting a structural engineer, however when I did anyway, F&F followed the engineer’s directives and allowed the engineer to check their work. Even so, I had to keep pushing for more investigation of the issue and for more fixes (which I readily paid for) as F&F went along. I did not feel confident that their instinct was to do the work well, I felt it was to do it fast. To give them the benefit of the doubt, they might have wanted to save me money and time, but I insisted over and over that money was no object, signed every change order, and paid immediately, so the time and money issue seemed to be theirs.
-F&F said their crew is super clean and careful, but my walls and doorways were pretty destroyed; gouges, chips, scratches, and dents to every surface the workmen were near. They told me that they would
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
down protection on the floors, but didn’t—I had to request it and then do it myself when theirs was inadequate to protect my house.
-After installing the tiles very well, the next day their carpenters chipped the bullnose
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
of a course of tiles while mudding the walls. F&F said the tiles must have come chipped and then been installed chipped (a problem in and of itself with F&F’s attention to detail), but I took pictures of when they were first installed and unchipped, disproving that. Sloppy workmanship, poor ownership of responsibility.
-The second issue with the chipped tiles was F&F’s solution: to just paint the chips. I paid for a NEW bathroom and bought NEW materials to be installed. Very frustrating to not get the full value of what you have paid for.
-F&F used my garden as a dumping ground. I found trash in my yard and grout poured all over my plants and herbs. All F&F did was yell at the individual who they thought did it. I didn’t complain so that some poor workman would get yelled at; I complained so that the issue would get fixed and so that I would be compensated for the damage. Very disappointing and upsetting.
-The plumbing was installed off-center. There is no way to fix this now. I will just have to always live with a tub spout that is off-center of the tub drain. When I pointed this out,
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
's response was, "no one is perfect but God." Well,
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was indeed a carpenter, but unfortunately he was unavailable to take my job. Disappointing lack of ownership for their mistake.
-The sliding glass doors were installed in a standard manner—centered on the tub ledge. However, my particular tub ledge slopes on the inside and the flat part is on the outer
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
of this ledge. Because there was a lack of attention to detail, the shower door is installed hanging off the ledge and into the tub rather than on a flat surface. This will cause issues with cleaning and leaking in the future. If they had only spent a second looking at what they were doing before they did it...very frustrating.
-Their idea of “paint ready” will mean a day of patching, sanding and caulking for me. In no way is what they left me with “paint ready.” Some of the molding doesn’t match up at the cuts with nails that missed and jut out of the molding and into the wall. There are broken caulk lines and major caulk gaps. Sloppy.
-After F&F reinstalled my toilet, it began constantly running—something it had never done.
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
pointed it out and I told him that it only started after F&F had taken it up and put it back so many times, which is understandable.
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
said they would fix it, but that a part would have to be replaced and it would be $85. I said I’d fix it myself—thankfully. Literally one youtube video later I turned one part and it stopped running. F&F’s knowledge of plumbing is either seriously questionable or they were trying to rip me off. Both not great.
-When I broke down all the mistakes F&F had made and the damage to my house, I had to argue for a discount. What they offered didn’t nearly cover the cost of how much it would take to re-do the improper work or to fix the damage caused.
-To F&F's credit though, I think that if I had demanded it, they would have taken down the doors, moved them to the proper spot, replaced all the tiles with drill holes and the chipped tiles and come back and sanded and caulked. But there comes a point when a homeowner is tired of their house being under construction and the fixes seem like they could potentially cause more damage than the original issue. I had to weigh these considerations and just decided to live with the work as-is even though it was painful. Over time I'm sure I'll appreciate the good parts of the bathroom and learn to live with the imperfections...

I stalled for a long time before finally making the decision to remodel, because I had heard so many horror stories about terrible contractors and the ensuing lawsuits, etc.

was the most responsive of the contractors that I contacted, and he also offered me the most reasonable price.
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
went out of his way to help me beyond what is called for by the contract I signed with him. He spent an afternoon with me to help me find the new fixtures for my bathroom - driving me to two different vendors and giving me valuable inputs on which ones to pick. I didn't pay him for this. His super
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was very responsive and his staff members were very professional. This was particularly important to me because I was living in the condo when the remodeling was going on.
The quality of the job his team did was outstanding - from interior design to selection of materials to wood work to tile work etc. The finished product - my two new bathrooms - are the BEST features of my condo. Neighbors and friends come and ask me for his information after they see my remodeled bathrooms.
Fishkill Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is an incredible person. Almost three years after the remodeling job was finished,

They came out pretty immediately to provide a bid on some repairs and were very kind, which was especially great because it was close to the holidays. However, we didn't receive the actual bid or any follow-up even after I followed up with them. I think I got a call from them over a month later which was too late for us. If it was too big or too small of a job for them, it would have been nice to know sooner rather than later so neither of us wasted our time.
