"Great crew that did a really nice job on our lot. We will call them back when the sewers are connected to fill in our septic tank and

"I called
and reached him in his truck on a Thursday. He was polite and took down my name and told me that he would call me the following" day on Friday. After waiting for his call on Friday, which never came I called him back early the next week. He apologized and took down a more formal contact information and we set up an appointment for him to come visit and discuss our lawn maintenance and our landscape plans for the future. On the day of the appointment,
didn't not arrive as scheduled he also did not call me. 45 minutes after the appointment I was able to reach him at his office. He again apologized, saying he lost my paperwork and wasn't able to call. He offered to come out right away and do the review with me, which I accepted. We spent a good deal of time once he arrived. We walked the property and we discussed multiple plans that would cover multiple seasons. At this point, I ask asked
to send me costs for the lawn patience and specific estimates for the projects we wanted to begin right away and rough budgetary estimates on the larger projects that would need to wait until next season. Unfortunately to this date, nearly one week later, I have not received a call or an email with the written estimate. It is troubling to me that this appears to be a pattern of behavior.

I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

One of the more difficult issues facing you will be making sure you compare apples 'n apples while understanding the differences between apples 'n oranges.

Some things common to all:

How far from your (water) meter pit to the home?

Do you know what sort of water pressure you have?

Those two questions sortta drive the rest.  How many sprinklers you have is a piece of the puzzle but it is lower on the issues list than how much water pressure and gallons per minute of flow (gpm) you have.  Knowing the water pressure and gpm coming to the house is important because it is the info divided by the flow rate of the heads to tell you how many you can run at a time.

That, plus the number of heads it takes to cover your yard will let them decide on how many zones to cut the yard into (each zone is X number of heads that run at the same time).

Will the different estimates be for systems that are all parts from a single manufaturer or will it be a collection of brands?  Some will tell you that the parts (controller, back-flow, heads and even specific heads) are better from different manufacturers while others will tell you that all from a single manufacturer will give you an optimized system.

And, are the contractors equally certified?  Not only education and experience but certifications from the various manufacturers who's parts they want to use.  And, will their installations be the same?  Will they open trenches all around your yard and be a week getting the stuff layed, connected and back-filled?  Or, will they pull the flexible pipe and be in 'n out in one day with water flowing to cover their intrussion before they leave that day?

Will your system need to be blown out with pressurized air at the end of the season to avoid winter freeze and bursts or will it drain automagically?

I know, I took your simple question and made it hard.

When I bought my system about 9 years ago, I had a variety of estimates and the differences sortta fell into the mess I listed above.  The low estimate was a person who seemed to be from the "get it in the ground and fix it later" school.

The highest estimate was from someone who seemed more concerned about my yard and the final result than I was.  The low person was using parts 'n pieces from a variety of manufacturers.  The high person was certified by the company that made all the parts he was wanting to use and he carried a fairly high rating from them for his past performance..  He would vary for me if I wanted but he had sound reasons from the controller to each of the heads as to why he preferred his "brand".

It doesn't look like you are a member of Angie's List.  Given the size of the investment you are looking at, this might be a great time to join and see how others in your community have rated the contractors you are considering or if there is one you should add to your list.

My yard is between 12 and 15,000 square feet less the house, deck, two mini-barns and it is interrupted with a number of blocking (blocks the stream of water) evergreens and planting beds.

The low estimate I had was about $2,500 and would take three days to put in from the time they began to trench.  I don't recall how many heads he wanted to put in but if it was off, he'd be able to put another anyplace and tie it to the nearest zone to give me good coverage.  Uh, this was the get it in the ground 'n adjust later person.

The high estimate I had was around $4,500.  This proposal was for seven active zones each having 5 to 7 heads.  There was enough capacity (extra zone controllers and space within the system controller) built in to add drip irrigation at a later date for the planting beds without having to replace anything.  He drew the entire yard and gave me a copy with the heads marked showing the "throw" of each and the overlap he built in to avoid any missed areas.  And, they wanted to arrive in the morning and leave that evening with the system watering to cover their tracks throughout the yard.  One day and they would not leave until it was working as advertised!

I took the high estimate.  I have a neighbor who bought from the other folks.  Both of us are happy.  He is really happy because each time he calls his company for adjustments or corrections (yep, they got it in the ground and are still putzing with it) they are out within the week, they are really easy to do business with and their service calls' costs haven't gone up a whole bunch.

Sorry, you can't look at the price and divide by X number of heads and have a fair comparison.

1) IF you are talking the root crown - the portion where it is not one solid truck or "bole", but still a solid or near-solid mass of roots coming off the base of the trunk, then that has to come out on way or another. Typically, once you get beyond about a 3 foot circle then you are in the radial portion of the roots where they spread out laterally, and are a foot or more apart, and new roots can grow in that area fro the new tree OK. Of course, be prepared to have to trim some volunteers so the old tree can't come back, and be sure to fertilize the new tree per recommendations because the old roots will still be trying to extract water and food from the soil to support the tree that they do not yet realize is gone. Do NOT put stump killer or poison in the old tree - will kill new one too.

2) The proper commercial way to do this is to have the entire root crown and larger roots removed with a stump grinder - looks like this -

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/build-yourself/117273d1230307978-stump-grinder-questions-stumpgrinderred.jpg

You need a tree service that can grind down at least two feet below ground level and remove the root crown and larger root segments. If you hve large roots running laterally quite a ways, he can grind them up too - ditto to "trippers" sticking up above ground. Just be sure to have it clear (spray painted) upfront how far he is going for what he quoted - typically about $150 for tree up to 1-2 feet in diameter, up to $500 for a massive sycamore or walnut or cottonwood or redwood with 6 foot diameter crown. While you can rent stump grinders at tooll rental places, I REALLY do not recommend it - the rental ones you can afford to rent for one use are pretty light duty, and they can chew a person up in no time flat if you lose control when it snags in the wood or hits a rock.

3) Another way is to go out to where the massive roots taper off to something you can reasonable cut - say 4-6 inches in diameter, and cut them all in a circle around the stump, then with a come-along or CAREFULLY (not more than a few hundred pounds) with a vehicle with a trailer hitch, put a steady pull on a good rope or strap or chain in a shallow notch cut around the top of the stump (so it does not pop off easy), then while it is being rotated up out of the ground walk around and cut any root you see still attached or trying to lift out of the ground. This works much better if the stump is left about 4-6 feet high so you get some real leverage on it with the pull, but if already cut down short run chain or strap over the top of it and around a large root on the far side of the stump. I use a Sawzall with foot long coarse tooth wood cutting blade for this - goes through roots really fast, and blade is only $1 or so apiece so ruining one or two hitting rocks is no big thing, and also reaches in under the stump better and safer than an axe. I helped a neighbor take out a back yard full of birches this way - took us about half a day to remove about 15 trees with about 6 foot diameter circle of crown and roots, leaving holes about 1-2 feet deep where each tree was. Remember this - whichever way you use to take it out, you will need maybe 1-5 wheelbarrow loads of good growth medium to replace the divot.

4) Cheaper route - cut off flush with ground level (or leave some stickup as a planter or stool or feeder base or whatever), and plant new tree at least 4 feet away from old crown, in a spot between the old roots.

?
'Reasonable' is one of those words that means wildly divergent things to different people.  Check with your local high school to see if they have  any sort of agricultural program.  If yes, perhaps someone in that program could help you.  Being a landscaper myself, I must say it sounds like you want something that is - first and foremost - cheap.   This is NOT the best way to look for any service.  You would be better served looking for 'competant' than with 'cheap'.  The nicer you want your flowerbed to look, the more important it is to find someone who REALLY knows what they are doing.

We started our research for landscapers three years after moving into our new construction
home. We wanted to complete the front yard first, followed by the back yard. We
had a problem with grubs, we had construction debris buried in our yard, there
was too much clay in some areas but not others, and we had a downspout that
would get overwhelmed during heavy rainstorms and create a divot in the mud
below. We wanted a beautiful urban oasis to reflect the transitional style of
our home. We wanted three seasons of flowers and fragrance, something to
attract the birds, and a reduction in the amount of grass we had to mow (but we
wanted the grass that we did have to be safe from grubs!).
We interviewed three landscapers and it became very clear that
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked

Gardens, Inc., was the right choice.
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and her team patiently explained the
issues we were facing with our yard and how to overcome them, they created an
unbelievable design for our space, and encouraged us to plant a couple of
slow-growing ornamental trees to welcome the birds – even after my husband
swore he would never plant trees in the front yard! They are beautiful! We
continue to get many compliments from our neighbors!
We later hired
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and her team to tackle the back yard with
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
. We wanted privacy, shade,
to maintain as much grass as possible for the kids to play, to keep our
vegetable garden intact, to find a use for a bare, remote spot next to our
garage, and a space for the kids to be able to dig in the dirt and get dirty.
We also wanted walkways on both the north and south sides of our house.
Our back yard is hard to access; the house next door is very close; the walkway on the
north end of the house never saw any sun and was a mud pit that we needed to
address; we had a square spot of land to the south of our garage that was
elevated three feet higher than our back yard with a retaining wall and no sun
exposure; and our very large back window gave us a clear view of our neighbor’s
parking space that was always filled with a variety of unsightly vehicles, so
we wanted to block the view.
We love summer weekends now so we can enjoy the creation that
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and her team gave
us. We added privacy trees to block the unsightly view with durable plants
below, along with a custom-built screen with wisteria for added privacy from
our neighbor’s home. We have evergreen plants that give us year-round color, we
added a children’s garden so each year they can plant annuals that they choose,
and we have an amazing shade garden in that formerly-useless spot next to the
garage!
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
also added beautiful crushed-stone walkways with
oversized bluestone pavers on the south side of the house so guests can enter
for back yard parties, a less expensive crushed stone “maintenance” path in the
shaded north walkway, and they also created us a custom fence for our vegetable
garden that goes above and beyond keeping the animals out.
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
’s entire team is great to work with. Her landscape designer continued to refine
our plan until we were completely happy with it.
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
pushed us (per my
request) on some of our plantings, helping us get what we wanted, even though
we didn’t know it (such as the trees in the front yard). The crew works hard
every time they are here, they are kind and respectful to our space, and leave
our yard looking beautiful every time they visit.
Thank you
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
& team!

They were slow to perform the work (but it was December) but they did not complete the work. They were supposed to backfill the area around the concrete pad wtih dirt after the forms were removed but they did not. I have called and left messages 3 times but have received no response at all.

First off when I bought the deal it was promised that the contractor would call me on or before 2-24-2015. On the 24th around 6pm I attempted to call the contractor since I had not heard from them. I got no answer and left a message. The contractor called me back later that evening apologizing and telling about some issues he was having with his internet or something(which another unsatisfied customer stated they did with them in another review). This has nothing to do with me. This threw up a red flag with me. A companies internal issues should never be shared or put upon the customer. So we set up to meet the following day. He went from 12 to 12:15 to 12:30ish to between 12:30 and 1:00pm. Another a red flag with me, but ok I agreed to that time slot. At 12:54pm he calls me asking can we meet at 2:15pm. I say no we can not. I have already rearranged my day to give you this time slot. He then lied saying he tried calling me earlier which I know is not true since I had my phone with me all morning anticipating his call when he was "en-route to my home" as we agreed. My phone records also do not annotate a call from him. I then told the contractor I would rather not do business with him since he did not seem to value my time and his dishonesty about the call was enough for me to follow my instinct and not do business with this company. He then got very rude (
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
changed and elevation) stating he doesn't want to do business with me either if I am gonna act like that and hung the phone up on me. A reputable business would have simply apologized for what happened and bid me farewell. This looks to be a part of a franchise I will also be sending a complaint to a corporate office if this is in fact a franchise.

Mr.
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
seemed like he was giving me a great price for the amount of trees he was to cut down, but I realize now that I have been had.
He cut down six or seven large pines that he let fall onto my yard leaving deep and horrible trenches. I later learned from his wife that he normally cuts trees in the winter because, "the ground is frozen so he doesn't have to smooth out the yard." Which took me by surprise, because as a first time homeowner I didn't know that it was his responsibility to leave my yard as he found it. So, this made me ask her, "Why didn't he smooth out MY yard?" Her answer was an incoherent mumble of furious backpedalling.
Besides leaving my yard a mess, he also lied to me about selling my wood. He told me clearly that the HUGE solid pines he cut down were unsellable because they are "too close to the house may contain metal in them." I later find out that they have machines (magnets perhaps?) to find the metal in trees before the cut them off. I am almost certain he sold the trees and made a nice tidy profit at my expense.
My lawyer informs me that though he advertises himself as an
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
his corporation was dissolved a few years ago. This then is fraud to call yourself an
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and not be an
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
. What are the implications when someone's
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
has been dissolved on other aspects of my dealings with them? Does that affect his insurance? What if a tree he was cutting fell on my house? Is his non-company still covered? I'm not being facetious; I'm actually asking these questions, because I have no idea of business law. But I'm wary when someone tells me they're an
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and they're not.
[I see that on February 24th 2015, when I wrote this and February 25th 2015, when I am going to post this, the
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
has been removed from his name and his address has changed from
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
to
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
,
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
]
And lastly, trivially but tellingly, in September 2013 I tacked on $200 to the price of the landscaping for him to deliver a cord of wood to me. That wood was never delivered. He always had some excuse or the other...he didn't have the wood at the current time....the wood was cut to the wrong length....now his delivery truck is broken...etc. It was a game he played with me for a year and a half. I kept texting and he kept avoiding. Finally, a few months ago, I just gave up.
In the grand scheme of things $200 is a paltry amount, but what kind of professional deals with clients this way? How can one trust such a human-being?
He is not a man of his word; he isn't trustworthy; his work is shoddy and he cuts corners when he knows his client is too stupid/naive to catch him out.

and his crew were great to work with. We are detailed oriented and

Came out to give us a bid. Listened and had good ideas for our situation.
Front
The bed border "walls" were cracking and falling apart. The came in can built new lower profile stone bed borders which we like. He took out all of our diseased roses and replaced them with low maintenance but colorful plants. This included trees in the middle of the front yard. In these he put soakers hooked up to our sprinkler system! Great idea as the bed wouldn't get water from the sprinklers because the borders were too high. He also recommended Lantana and Black Eyed Susans, both good choices for us. The Black Eyed Susans became bunny food but the Lantana went crazy and looks great!! The front is attractive and easy to care for, just what we wanted.
Back
We wanted a "no-fuss" yard for our new large puppy, replacing a heavily landscaped yard (many ornamental bushes) with grass and some color.
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
came up with a great idea for the beds using Yucca and large rocks which our now 100lb dog cannot chew on and carry around.
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
also recommended some easy care climbing plants for the back fence to add color. A couple have since died (we don't think this is
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
's fault, nor did we contact him about it) which we replaced.
The french drain design is better than I imagined it would be and is working great! They took it all the way to the
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and this has really helped eliminate the swamp we would get in our side yard (the dogs refuse area) when it rained or our neighbors run their sprinkler.
We had a path we wanted redone and when the work was over it was the same. I called and let him know we thought we had discussed it and made that clear, he came right out within a week and put it in exactly as we had envisioned, without charge.
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
is professional and did what he committed to do. We have a couple of other projects in mind and when we're ready for those we will call
Bullville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
.
