"I have had this service done before. This was a much more complicated situation. Called early afternoon to schedule service. Delayed tech arrival a couple of hours" at my request, because I had some business to take care of outside the home.
, the tech #283, arrived promptly at the scheduled time. He survey the problem and quickly started to work. He correctly identified the problem, and started cleaning the drain. The volume of tree roots blocking the sewer was extraordinarily large and it required multiple passes to clear the roots.
kept clearing the roots until he was sure that the sewer was clear. A camera inspection of the line has been scheduled for the next day. Considering the difficulty of the job, the work was completed quickly and professionally.

"A corner in our basement, where there was a plumbing wall, was periodically seeping water. My son and I cut through the drywall and found that the PVC drain from" the upstairs appliances, sinks, and showers had just been set into a rubber sleeve attached to the cast iron drainpipe in the basement floor, but never clamped in place. The rubber sleeve was deteriorating, and water was leaking out. So I bought the "Big Deal" from
, where you get a house call plus $100 towards plumbing repairs, for $39. The day I called,
had a cancellation and so was able to come that same morning and check out the problem. He said the rubber sleeve was dry rotted, and explained that he couldn't just replace it alone, because the pipes are not flexible to allow for maneuvering, so he would have to cut away part of the existing pipe in order to install the new rubber sleeve. As part of a routine inspection, he checked our water pressure, and found that the pressure was too high--80 psi instead of 60. He also pointed out that "code" now requires that if you have a pressure reducing valve, which we do, you also have to have a thermal expansion tank, which we do not. He said we weren’t required to install it because our plumbing was installed before the requirement became code, but it would be important to have if we were to sell the house.
recommended reducing the pressure by adjusting the pressure reducing valve on the house intake pipe, but when he attempted to adjust it he discovered that the valve was not functioning--it would not reduce the pressure below 80 psi. He explained that to save wear and tear on the pipes, it would be good to replace it with a valve that could lower the pressure to 60 psi.
told me that their fee for cutting the drywall was $150. Since we had already cut through the drywall, and it was just a question of expanding the hole a few inches in each direction, he agreed to waive the drywall charge, if I also agreed to put in a pressure expansion tank. He gave me a list of costs: $508 for the new rubber connector and pipe repair $500 for the new pressure reducing valve $210 for the expansion tank
did a great job. It was clear he knew what he was doing. He is skilled in cutting and fitting, and in welding. He is personable, friendly, and explains patiently what he is doing. It took him about 4 3/4 hours to finish all three tasks. He cleaned up everything before he left. I was pleased with his work. And even though it wasn’t an urgent job, I was happy to get it done that same day. Still, it seemed kind of pricey to me.
explained that there is a fixed price for each kind of plumbing job, regardless of how easy or how difficult it is in each particular instance. So, for example, drain repair is $508 whether it takes an hour or all day. The same for the other two jobs. In our case, there were no complications in the installations. The total was $1118. I hadn't realized how little of the total cost went for parts. The cost of the parts (including the new rubber connector and pipe, the pressure reducing valve, and the expansion tank, plus copper pipe, solder, etc.) was under $175. I had paid $39 for the “Big Deal” (which included the house call plus $100 towards the repair.) My total at the end of the day was $1118. So that means $1043 was for labor and overhead. I haven’t hired a plumber before, so I
’t know, but $200 an hour seemed a bit steep.

4 common plumbing scams and how to avoid them

Some plumbers are in the business just to make a quick buck. Here are four of the most common plumbing scams to watch out for and how to avoid them.

gas fireplace with fire burning
Fireplaces, Chimney Sweep, Plumbing

Dear Angie: How much can I expect to pay to have my wood fireplace converted to gas? Our house is about 30 years old. The bottom of the fireplace looks like it's easily accessed through the basement. The conversion would involve running 30 to 50 feet of gas line. — Thomas M., Cincinnati, Ohio

From the sounds of it, you have a clog between the floor drain and the connection to the city sewer (unless you have a septic tank).  The lower flow rates of sinks / showers / dishwashers probable don't cause a backup like the washing machine does.  A couple of suggestions.

1.  Snake the drain line with a spade tip snake, twisting the snake as you advance it.  This should clear the partial blockage.

 2.  If feasable, have your washing machine discharge into a utility sink and put a strainer on the drain to catch the clothing fibre (fibres and grease from the sink probably made the clog in the first place not to mention a garbage disposal).

3.  Replace your floor drain with one that has a backflow preventer (looks like there is a ping pong ball in it).

 Good Luck

It is not uncommon for a plumber to have to go get the parts necessary to repair and complete the job.  It is very hard to determine what the problem is over the phone and it is not until the repair process begins that the parts needed to resolve the problem is discovered.  It may also depend on if the plumber is using hourly rates or per job rates.  I would hope the time to get the parts would be minimal and the charge would be as well!

FYI: CPVC and PEX are two different materials and installed differently.  PEX is not intended to be glued but instead has special crimp fittings.  PEX is a brand name of one product that is manufactured slightly differently by others as well so it is important that the same brand fittings are used to match the pipe material.

Mobile homes used CPVC for years and some still do.  It works fine but is not as strong as a properly soldered copper pipe system.  Is the contractor installing this new plumbing a licensed plumber?  I'd be surprised if he is since he's using CPVC and not PEX (or similar) or copper.  PEX pipe is even cheaper than CPVC when run by a knowledgable plumber.  It doesn't require nearly as many joints since it comes in rolls and can flex through spaces easily.

There are some groups raising a fuss about BPA and other chemicals found in plastics that don't like the use of CPVC, PVC, or PEX pipe.  I haven't seen the results of any lab tests to confirm or dispute their concerns.  As far as durability goes it's fairly safe as long as it's properly installed and secured.  It is not as susceptible to hard water damage as copper.  It absolutely must be insulated along it's entire length to protect it from contact to other materials as well as freezing.  Also, the fixtures in the house need to be grounded electrically since the pipe itself provides no electrical protection against accidental shock or electrocution.  In a copper plumbed house the system is grounded so static electricity, a short in a wire near a water line, or lightning strike will carry the current out through the pipe instead of through the water to you, ideally.

If it's installed correctly you should be fine but make sure the contractor knows what he is doing and follows the proper procedures to use CPVC pipe.

It is usually cheaper to remove part of the ceiling below and patch it after the leak has been repaired.  Remember that water can travel before settling in one area, causing the spot you've seen.  Just because it is below the toilet does not mean that the toilet is the problem.  The cheapest option is to pull the toilet and check the floor around the wax ring to see if it has been leaking.  A new wax ring only costs a few dollars.  When was the last time you caulked the shower in that bathroom?  The water can leak around the corners or at the door (if you have one) and travel along the floor joists until it pools in a lower spot on the ceiling below, then seep through.  It could also be a seal at the drain of the tub or shower.

I get a few calls a year for this sort of thing.  It's usually something simple but can be a nightmare to diagnose, especially if the problem is intermittent.  Start with the simple possibilities and use deductive reasoning to narrow the possibilities.  Before you do a lot of damage it may pay off to hire a reputable contractor to help you make sure you've exhausted all of the imple and more obvious possibilities.

Went very well. He called me back quickly on a Sunday night and told me the app price. He said would come bye the next morning at 8:30 and he was here at 8:30. He left to do a prior commitment and said he would be back after 12:00 noon. He called me at 1:30 and said he was on the way. He was here at 2:30 and he had the job done by 5:00pm. He also did an excellent clean up. I am very pleased.

I found
Reno Plumbers Provider Name Locked
on various websites and, because all his reviews were excellent, I decided to call him. I got his voice mail, which states that he will return all calls within 2-3 days and, true to his word, he did. I gave him a synopsis of the problems he would encounter once here, and when he arrived he had most of the parts that needed replacing. The only set back was the faucet leaks and immovable bathroom hot water faucet. This is because he needed 4 new cartridges, which he told me I could get for free from the faucet company, saving me hundreds of additional dollars. On the second visit, he replaced all cartridges, stopped all leaks and got the bathroom faucets turning as smooth as butter. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner. Thanks Nick for your professionalism, assessment and treatment.

It has been a while since this job was done so I am going by recollection. Here is the jist of the situation, I purchased a new toilet to replace myself and while doing so the piece that you attach the toilet to the floor with (I think I it is called a flange but if not that is what I will refer to it as) broke cause it was really old. I called
Reno Plumbers Provider Name Locked
because I had used them before to clean out my drain line and they did a decent job and was fair on the price. When they got there I had the old toilet already removed, the area cleaned up and new exactly what the problem was and what needed to be done. I am a DIY type of person. I ask what the cost was going to be. They responded verbally with around $250 dollars so I said go ahead. After they replaced the flange I asked how much additional it would be to have them put the new toilet in place. I had already purchased it. The man said Something like just a little bit more thinking 20 dollars or so. So I had them put the new toilet in place that I had already purchased. The men completed the work in less than 30 min went to the truck to write up a reciept. They returned with a bill of $550 dollars. When I hit the roof about the price he gave me a song and dance about how he thought he new the price and apologized profusely. But said they have to go by what was in the book and they don't replace these often enough for him to remember. Because I was really mad he offered to remove the 50 dollars but said there was nothing more he could do. I told him to get out of my house and I would never use this company again.

Word to the wise, Unless you like being LIED to and CHEATED I would NOT use this company.
