When he presented the bill he listed labor at 3 posts $150 each for a total of $450. He listed materials at $788 for a total of $1,238. When I questioned him about the cost of materials he stated, "That's what I paid and if I had billed you for all the labor the cost would have really been closer to $1,500." I knew that he had been working on another project at the same time and asked if he might have gotten the two totals mixed up. He again stated, "No that's what I paid but if you'd feel better about the job I'll bring over a couple of hundred and give back to you." I said, "That's not the point. If you can honestly say that you spent $788 for materials for my job, then that's what I'll pay." Once again he said, "That's what I paid." I replied, "Fine", and hung up.
Yes I know it's my fault I should have gotten everything in writing prior to his starting the job.
