"Angie’s List Review, Wedding Wire & The Knot, Wedding Channel PROCEED WITH CAUTION when thinking of booking your wedding at King’s Court Castle" in Canterbury Village!!! Recently my son was married at The Wedding Chapel in Canterbury Village and the reception at King’s Court Castle. I’m compelled to give this lengthy review of the event to cover the issues, so prospective customers are aware of potential issues if you’re considering booking this wedding venue. Wish I had been advised of these issues … I wouldn’t have trusted them with such an important life experience. After working with
to ensure my son’s wedding would be close to perfect, the King’s Court staff really fell short! I had asked
several times “who will be there to oversee the wedding and reception that evening?”. She said
the Banquet Mgr would be available at our event. They tell you what you want to hear … not what is really going to happen.
was nowhere to be found because she was overseeing (3) other events that evening. An experienced banquet manager needed to be overseeing the inexperienced staff of young men. Instead, a very young manager was put in charge of her responsibilities at our 150 guest wedding reception. The servers might have been all of 17 years old and didn’t have a clue what they were supposed to be doing. Guidance was needed to do the simplest tasks and acted as though this was their first time working a large event. So, this became my responsibility for the evening! 1. Cheese display had no serving utensils. Guests were using fingers to help themselves to cheese & crackers. I asked one of the young staff members if they had tongs. He replied “oh yes” … & ran to get some very large salad tongs. I had to ask him for smaller tongs. I’m certain State Health Dept. wouldn’t like to see people touching food to serve themselves. They ran out of appetizer plates, leaving guests waiting. 2. I purchased a special champagne for the “bride & groom toast” . When I asked for bottle to be opened, the young man said “Oh yes, I’ll have to get a manager to open it” . By the time he got it opened, the toasts were finished. The bride and groom had no champagne in flutes for toast .. very embarrassing and unacceptable!!! The young manager finally brought the opened champagne and apologized, but you cannot redo that missed special moment! 3. Dinner buffet had no salad plates or bowls and dinner plates were pretty small. Guests had to put salad on same plate with beef and sauce, etc …. very unprofessional way to serve! I asked manager to find plates/ bowls and he did, but I shouldn’t have had to oversee this. 4. I had planned a Beautiful Sweet Table with (4) different cakes and fruit tarts. Some guests were beginning to leave and dessert table had not been set up yet. I asked staff to please bring out desserts for the Sweet Table. Instead they walked around with the fruit tarts on trays offering them to guests. I asked them to simply place a variety of all desserts on the table for guests to select from …. pretty
task and given that
had written instructions to ensure it was done nicely … this was unacceptable! The dessert table I put so much time and expense into was ruined by lack of effort on staff’s part.

The bartender said “Yes it’s well liquor …. that’s what Iwas told to serve”. The bride & groom paid $600 for the upgraded bar … it wasn’t being served! My son and I went into the kitchen to speak with staff. They showed us the Standard Bar order. A staff member remembered my visit to

the Banquet Manager … EXTREMELY POOR SERVICE!!! 6. After dinner dirty dishes were still on the tables. So, the bar ran out of clean glasses because tables were not cleared … guests were served drinks in plastic cups ... very low class! 7. I was assured by

(banquet manager) would be present during the event … SHE WAS NOT! Too many events being held at King’s Court that evening and that’s why we didn’t have enough plates, glasses & staff to handle event. If drastic changes aren’t made, King’s Court Castle will be known as a venue that puts on mediocre events with poor customer service. We spent over $7,000 and expected to receive great service. Money seems to be priority at King’s Court Castle ... the priority should be making your wedding day special! When your big day comes and things aren’t as promised, it’s too late…. you can’t redo it.

were appalled, apologized and did offer to refund a very small amount of money in comparison to what we paid for this event. I found this refund an insult considering the fact that I missed out on a big part of my son’s wedding reception to manage their staff and also missed special moment of champagne toast, so we have no memories or photos! Hopefully, my review will help someone considering King’s Court Castle for their wedding venue, so you

There was only one small hiccup when it came to the dinner and cocktail hour. Some where along the line there was a miscommunication of the start time, 4:30 as opposed to 4:00, but this was sorted out quickly with out a problem. After that is was smooth sailing and the staff helped kept things moving. We had scheduled the room until 10pm but guest were allowed to stay and talk till close of the restaurant at around 2am. I would use the
again for a large gathering and will continue to go there for there excellent food and German beer.

They had a garden for the wedding, they had a tent for the reception and they had a ballroom. We had our own caterer. They don't do the catering. The problem was that the staff was rude and disrespectful with the family members of the wedding parties (both the bride and the groom's family), acted condescendingly to the members of the family at a very happy occasion and it really tarnished the experience for the immediate family. It was a beautiful location but people should be wary of the staff. The staff is obnoxious. I would want others to be wary of using them.

My daughter and I ate dinner at the restaurant. Good menu. Food was great. Service was good. Their garlic rolls are worth the trip alone! One of the great places to dine in downtown Hillsboro.

It was a fabulous experience. Everybody that we got through them was good. Everything we got from them was good. The food was fabulous and we had a pre-tasting for it. They were responsive.

Throughout the planning process he was a bit difficult to get ahold of, but we hoped things would go OK as we got the final music to him the afternoon before the wedding and could discuss final details. This last minute work was terribly stressful.
The videographer seemed sub-contracted, but was very professional.

. He stopped responding to emails, then finally responded and claimed to have shipped it, even promised to send us a tracking number. We never received the video and he never sent us a tracking number. He now refuses to respond to emails, texts, phone calls and voice mails.
He has also not refunded our money and we live in California so we're unable to follow up in person.

Positives: beautiful setting, great DJ food good but main entrée (salmon and filet were not hot when served),salad was placed at tables over 1 hour before meal, appetizers served hot but did seem frozen (not freshly made) Food servers for meal were friendly and helpful. Photographers and photo booth great.

Negatives: multiple problems:







1. Staff rude: literally yelled at bride when 20 guests did not have seats, Told bride it was her fault and announced to guests in reception area the bride was to blame for lack of seating. Took over 1 hour to resolve by setting up more tables while guests stood around and watched. The bar area was closed during this time. The groom had to step in and requested person responsible for tables be removed from our venue, which they did. They were given a list of guests and table arrangements but did not check to see if it corresponded with the arrangement they set up. The groom's parent-table was placed in a corner, near the bar and away from the center of the rooms they had to go to dance floor area to view first dance, best man and maid of honor speeches







2. had to walk between buildings in rain without supply of umbrellas.







3. Arrangements were made for no tip jars. Bartenders set up tip jars during the cocktail hour and responded rudely to request to remove them by saying "Well, we'll just have to talk to the owner first". The tip jars were finally removed nut were set up again during the reception at the second bar. Bartenders also refused to give guest a glass of water to take her medication while the bar was closed.







4. Hot water for tea was served in containers that smelled and tasted like coffee















General comments: Eventually everything worked out and guests had a good time. I had 2 other children married in the last 3 years and hosted 3 other large events (100 to 200 guests) at other venues. There are a lot of extra charges that can add-up. The above price did not include alcohol. There can be an extra charge if items if guests show up too early, if items are not delivered within a specific timeframe (before 5pm) mid-week. The customer service skills and responses by at Kings Mill was by far the worst. Tough to get over when the bride is crying before entering the reception and no one from the staff apologized.
