Masonry exteriors

Generally considered the highest quality choice for home exteriors, brick and stone are also almost maintenance free and will last as long as the house, though some repairs may be needed from time to time.

Not good news - this is typically a sign of either differential settlement, or a shear failure in progress. If a settlement issue, would normal trend from the door frame area diagonally upward toward the center of the door (not straight-line toward the center, but angling in that direction, alternately up through the mortar zig-zagging up through the joints), with the greatest separation on the vertical legs of the crack, and relatively tight onthe horizontal zigs. If a shear issue (beam or supporting post failure) then could angle either way but more normally towards the center again, but with the greatest separation usually in the horizontal zigs rather than the vertical, and commonly through some bricks also, not just through the mortar joints.

If settlement, look for signs of continuous concrete cracks perpendicular to the garage door in the concrete sill the door comes down on, or for a bowing or arching of the concrete where the door makes contact.

For a shear failure, could be just the facing falling off, or could be a support beam or post failure - look for cracked beam (not just paper-thin 1-2 foot long cracks in the bottom couple of laminations if a wood beam), but substantial cracks with corrugated cardboard-box material thickness openings, or diagonal and jagged up through the grain with torn wood visible; or rotted or failing side support posts (may be large support timbers, or tripled 2x4's right next to each other). If covered both sides, look for distress in the interior drywall, especially more than hairline diagonal cracks. Look also for any sign of significant sagging in the beam over the doorway. If you see any of these types of problems, then you need a framing carpenter or structural engineer to look at it.

If the beam and posts and any metal joiner plates at the ends of the beam where it meets the posts look good I would start with a mason, to check the veneer to see if it is peeling off - could be a slab is ready to peel free. Once he opens the area up (removes loose bricks) be sure to look at the exposed surface behind for any sign of beam failure - if there is any hold off on replacing the brick until the beam is looked at.

I would give about 5:1 odds it is the facade peeling away from the building - much less of an issue than a beam failure.

Masonry reviews in Center Harbor

fMarcus had been referred to me by a friend who had used him when building his house. I spoke to him on the phone and we agreed on a time to meet at the job site for an estimate. Right from the beginning
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
couldn't have been more patient, friendly, helpful and professional. We met on time and I showed him the four crumbling concrete steps in the rear of the building, the crumbling concrete stoop in the front of the building and the cinder block wall with cracks in it. There were also two loose pieces of irregular shaped slate at the base of the steps, which was a trip hazard. The steps were not all the same height, so
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
recommended reducing the rise in the taller steps by adding concrete. He also excavated at the base of the steps, cut the slate into three perfect rectangles and cemented them in. No more tripping hazard and everything looks great! He was also able to repair and reinforce a crumbling concrete stoop in the front of the building after I had been told by other contractors that it had to be replaced. As he was working,
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
would give me options and come up with better solutions, like strengthening the wall with short pieces of rebar. I would definitely hire

Before we contacted
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
at Calao Stone, we had reached out to multiple masons and landscape architects and had been unsatisfied with their exorbitant estimates and long projected lead times. Everything changed when we met
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
, however; he was extremely prompt, professional, and responsive, and provided a very reasonable estimate and timeframe for our renovation project.

The estimate from Calao was so much better than their competitors that we also decided to place flagstone on our back patio -- and all for the same estimate as some masons proposed to simply replace our stairs and walkway. Calao also recommended that we choose our stone from a local
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
in Maryland that carried an enormous amount of beautiful stone; my wife was very pleased with the price and selection.

Making matters even easier,
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
offered to begin the work while we were away from town over the Christmas holidays. While this took a
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
of faith,
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
's professionalism and daily email updates during our absence made the process very smooth. Calao's crews completely transformed our relatively-small rowhome entrance and back patio; the crew even broke the stone by hand for our new front yard planter. The excellent quality of the masonry is apparent at first sight.

In short, if you're looking for professional, timely, reasonable stonework in the

was a pleasure to work with and we recommend him and Calao without reservation.

was efficient, professional and thorough. they did a fantastic job explaining things and did not try to up sell us.

This time the estimate came back at almost double the price I paid another contractor to do the same job.
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked

My chimney was deteriorating and
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
explained to me in detail what work he would need to perform in order to make the chimney safe again. He told me what materials were needed and exactly what the job would cost. We agreed upon a start date, which he cautioned should be soon based on the poor condition of my chimney, and also informed me when he would complete the job. He finished ahead of schedule and the chimney looks like new. I can't believe it is the same crumbling chimney it once was.
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
is also the neatest contractor I have ever had the pleasure to work with. I could really see the effort he puts into and the pride he takes in his work.
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked

Aside from the impeccable work

I contacted
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
to give us an estimate on what we had in-visioned for the space.
Center Harbor Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
came out, on time, and discussed with us our ideas and said he would send a sketch and estimate via email, which he did within the time he stated. We were happy with the sketch and estimate and scheduled the work. He contacted me with a revised schedule of a sooner date, wow, what customer service! Under promise and over deliver! They arrived when stated and listened to our wishes for the project and completed the work within the stated time frames, actually and day and half earlier then promised, great! The finished work looks fantastic! I would use them again and recommend them to anyone who asked and has asked after seeing the work!

Provider cleaned my chimney - great.
Provider gave materials so that I could pick a ribbon fireplace insert for existing woodburning fireplace. I selected and ordered everything in September with little help - fine. I was told parts were delayed until mid October, which was unusual but because I "picked a popular model." Okay... Gave $2000 deposit.
No further word as the months go by.
I had to follow up more than once for status and finally, in early December, when I told them that the manufacturer should offer me an incentive to continue to wait and that I wanted my fireplace by Christmas, they threw up their hands and said "we can't do that" and that "the manufacturer won't offer you anything" - this all in an exchange on a Friday evening after some back and forth with the office girl at CRU. Well I called the manufacturer directly and they weren't even open that day to advise on that. And when I did finally speak to the manufacturer, they said that there were no delays and that units were shipping like crazy. Manufacturer told me I was "insane" for waiting 3 months for a gas insert and to look elsewhere for a dealer ASAP. CRU did the heavy lifting for me there though, since they flat out said that they couldn't deliver what I needed.
So...it took about 3 more weeks to get my refund check - without interest - back from CRU and no apology from the owner. Big disappointment.
