"The first time (a few years ago) I used this company I bought an Angie's Deal for an outside keypad installation.
" did a wonderful job installing the keypad and explaining how to program and use it. He also oiled and checked my aging door unit. He said it was old, but was still going to work for at least another year. This summer it finally happened... the door opener died. I called
was scheduled to come out immediately, because I was unable to get my car into my garage. He installed a new unit and oiled all door parts. He actually did this on my lunch hour, so I didn't miss any work. The unit has been in for a couple of months and works like a charm. Also, the old wall button was tiny and did not light up. The new button is a big square that lights up. You can also turn the light on the unit on to get into the car. It automatically goes off when the opener is used again. I love it!!
is very knowledgable and professional. On his way out he gave me a cool multifunction pen with the company logo. It's also a flashlight and a tablet wand. I love it too!

-Becky W.

"The project went well. There was some minor confusion in coordinating installation, but the team was diligent in getting things back on track. Nice folks, professional." We would use them again.

-William S.

Garage doors can open and close on their own. Although it's rare, here's what to look for.

Angie's Answers

Here's the video I used - I found it pretty helpful:

Garage door spring replacements cost me less than $100 by doing it myself and only took me about 25 minutes. As far as I know, changing out the garage door springs will solve most issues. I found at kit online at a place called garage door nation and just bought that one since they seemed the most legit and included all the extras.

I am usually not good with these types of things. I saved almost $500 by doing it myself.

Hope this helps!

Assuming you are talking rollup garage door - issues similar but not as many parts on a tilt-up door.

Many rollup doors in residential use go 30 years or more on original springs.

Generally, they do not need to be replaced till they break. A broken one should be pretty obvious - the door will open very hard because it is being pulled up more at one side than the other, if at all, and one spring will be wound tight while the other will be looser, and usually the break is a visibly obvious one - either a visible break in the main portion of the spring, or the free end that goes into the end plate is broken off. Compare the springs against each other to see they look the same.

Also, if you think a spring is broken but can't see anything wrong, maybe the set screws that hold the end plates tight onthe axle have vibrated loose, relaxing the tension on the spring.

As the door gets older you may need to have a garage door repairman adjust the spring tension tighter if the door starts opening hard or balking at opening, though that is more often a problem with dirty slider track and bearings from dust accumulation, which you can clean with WD40 and then lubricate the side support rollers with motor oil or household oilcan. On lubrication of the slider track there are differences of opinion - some say clean with a non-oily solvent like brake cleaner and leave it clean and ddry so dust does not stick to it, other say oil with a light household oil or WD40. I prefer the latter so the plastic slider does not get worn out sliding on the metal slider track or pole, though it definitely does accumulate an oily dust grunge. The cleaning and lubricating should be done at least yearly - every 3-6 months if you use the door multiple times a day, more often if you are in a real dusty area like the Dust Bowl, the desert, or close to the beach.

I think he is trying to upsell you on something you don't need, or their company policy is neer fix, always replace - some companies are in that mode not, to prevent future call-backs when it does not work.

IF only needs screws, sounds like a good do it yourself job with self-tapping sheet metal screws. Or a Handyman could do for maybe $50-70 if that is all that is needed.

If the weatherstrip is damaged and in on the front edge of the garage door, one other possibility - replace with one like this, or screw a bottom compression type rubber weatherstrip on the bottom of the door - actually work a lot better than the face-mounted ones anyway, in my opinion. Look like this from M-D Building Products and Frost King among others. Can also be used nailed to frame to flap contacts door face as an edge and top weatherstrip -

Maintanence is going to vary by how much you use the door.  If it is used multiple times a day as cars go in and out I recommend having it checked annually.  You want someone to lube all of the proper points and inspect the rollers for wear or damage.  You don't want a component of that door failing and falling on yourself or a child.  Sometimes tracks need to be adjusted or realigned for various reasons.  Also, the springs can weaken and break causing the door to fall.  Have those checked as well.

Garage Door Installation reviews in Canterbury

The installer,
Canterbury Garage Door Companies Provider Name Locked
, was very friendly and a fast worker. After the repair, he let me know of things I could do to maintain the door. I don't like companies that "up-sell" you on things you don't need (or don't know if you need.)
Canterbury Garage Door Companies Provider Name Locked
just focused on the job and provided a courtesy check of all of the features. He also answered any questions I had. He was a true professional, and someone that I would recommend to others.
- Jeff S.

I came home in the rain to find my garage door would not open. Once I came inside I saw that one spring was on the floor. I did some Googling and learned via YOU TUBE how to DIY....I am not Ms. Fix It but the video was helpful as to what questions I should ask of professionals and what information I should share with them. I called two companies...I went with Mammoth after speaking with them. I called at approximately 11:00am and told the gentleman who answered my situation and that I had gotten his information from Angie's List magazine. He quoted me a price of $175.00 "out the door" with my Angie's List discount (price is normally $195.00) and stated he could have someone out between 3pm-5pm.
The service guy arrived a little before 3pm and he was finished within the hour...he was prompt, polite, and he programmed both my keypad and my remote control for me. He also showed me how to manually work my garage door should I have power outage and attached a cord so that I could access it easily.
I was very pleased with the service by Mammoth and would recommend them for garage door work.
- Mentha M.

Service person was very knowledgeable but immediately tried to sell me on more expensive additions. He found a stress issue with one side of my door and did a mini repair that he explained to me wouldn't solve the problem but would extend the life of the door. I also had him replace the molding around that door that was cracked and breaking. Total additional was $80 dollars for molding and small piece of metal added to door. Kinda of expensive but he was here on site.

at 8:00 a.m. On a Saturday morning, and work was completed before 1:00 p.m. Amazing service! Very friendly, professional technician. Wish all my home repairs were this
Canterbury Garage Door Companies Provider Name Locked
to accomplish.
- Lani S.

There were no faulty parts. The only needed work was to lubricate all parts that required lubrication. The technician did all that was needed. After he was finished with his work, the door operated more quietly than before.
- Stephen S.

They responded immediately after I purchased the deal on Angies List. They were very accommodating when it came to scheduling as I had a funeral to attend so had to push back my appointment time at the last minute. Saiid was the technician and was on time, actually early, and willing to wait until I arrived back home. After determining that we needed a new opener, he quoted me a price that I thought was too high but he worked with me to find a reasonable solution. He was efficient, timely and considerate of getting things set up properly and made sure I knew how everything worked before he left. He cleaned up all materials and took the old mechanism with him. I appreciated his efforts and would definitely recommend him again.
- Patty M.

I called
Canterbury Garage Door Companies Provider Name Locked
at about 12:40 PM on Saturday and explained that the hinges on the door snapped. The person I spoke to said a technician would be at my house between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. About 5 minutes later, the technician,
Canterbury Garage Door Companies Provider Name Locked
, called asking if it was OK if he came early at about 1:15 PM since he was running ahead of schedule. Yes!!! This was going fantastic so far.
Canterbury Garage Door Companies Provider Name Locked
called when he arrived at about 1:15 PM.
Canterbury Garage Door Companies Provider Name Locked
took a look at the door and saw the problem with the hinges, the door itself, the track, and caught the spring problem. I had missed that. We talked about the general condition, quality, and age of the door. It was a cheap, old door on it's last legs. It was a cheap old door when I bought my house in 1999. It was on it's last legs when I had to have some rollers replaced and the track re-aligned about 6-7 years ago. I know the door needs replacing, but my schedule won't allow me to replace the door until mid-October and it's just not possible to replace the garage door on a moments notice on a Saturday afternoon. I'm sure there are people who would expect it, but be real, that's an unrealistic expectation. So, I want a new garage door and I also want to be able to put my fairly new car in the garage where it's safe and protected.
The deal we worked out was that
Canterbury Garage Door Companies Provider Name Locked
would make repairs to my garage door so that I can continue to use it and we scheduled a new installation for mid-October when my schedule permits. The repairs to the exist door cost $100.00 and the quote on the new door is very reasonable.
Canterbury Garage Door Companies Provider Name Locked
fully explained all details of the costs of the existing door repair as well as my options for the new door. He was extremely knowledgeable and professional in presenting my options and answering questions without trying to steer me in any direction, a very pleasant experience. All this and
Canterbury Garage Door Companies Provider Name Locked
was on his way to his next job by about 1:55 PM. From my initial phone call to job complete was 1 hour and 10 minutes. Fantastic!!!
Even if all of this had happened in the originally quoted time frame, it would have still been fantastic. Quality emergency service on a Saturday afternoon, WOW!
- Eric N.

Called in the morning they came out the same day and fixed it. They quoted us $139 as he felt the metal cable needed to be replaced. After further inspection he deemed it ok and saved us $30. Overall very pleased with the service, fee and customer service. I would recommend and use again.
