"This is the second time we used
's services. I told you we'll use him again! Anyway, we needed to replace our two Live Oaks at" our front yard.We needed someone to haul them and replace them with two 10'+ Red Oak Trees instead. We used
last spring to do our frontyard landscaping and we were really pleased with his services. It just made sense to use him again! We contacted him via email for an estimate on Monday, and Friday rolled around and the job was done! Very fast service. My husband and I appreciate his timely responses to our emails/inquiries.

"We remodeled the backyard, rebuilding a retaining wall beautifully, makinhg a previous driveway a sanctuary of a place. He was lovely and absolutely understood" what we were going for. He listened, developed, and created a beautiful space for us. We are eager to use him again.
's stone work was an art form, as is his knowlege of native plants and what would create the look at what time of the year that you are going for. He was mindful of existing structures that we wanted to keep, which was sometimes difficult. He was conscientious and careful, always asking our thoughts instead of guessing in gray areas. We were always impressed at his vast array of knowlege of many trades. He was a respectful, enjoyable person to have around as well; someone you would want to share a beer with after transforming your space into a beautiful area. We would (and have) recommend him without a single reservation.

How to find the right landscaper

There are several things to look for when hiring someone to work in your landscape.

Landscaping

Landscaping your property adds beauty, value and curb appeal. Start with a clear plan of what you hope to achieve, then decide if want to do it yourself or hire a professional.

If your idea of outdoor entertaining still involves a portable grill and a Styrofoam cooler, it might be time to upgrade.

Outdoor kitchens cost thousands to build. That’s because labor charges can account for as much 70 percent of the cost.

I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

One of the more difficult issues facing you will be making sure you compare apples 'n apples while understanding the differences between apples 'n oranges.

Some things common to all:

How far from your (water) meter pit to the home?

Do you know what sort of water pressure you have?

Those two questions sortta drive the rest.  How many sprinklers you have is a piece of the puzzle but it is lower on the issues list than how much water pressure and gallons per minute of flow (gpm) you have.  Knowing the water pressure and gpm coming to the house is important because it is the info divided by the flow rate of the heads to tell you how many you can run at a time.

That, plus the number of heads it takes to cover your yard will let them decide on how many zones to cut the yard into (each zone is X number of heads that run at the same time).

Will the different estimates be for systems that are all parts from a single manufaturer or will it be a collection of brands?  Some will tell you that the parts (controller, back-flow, heads and even specific heads) are better from different manufacturers while others will tell you that all from a single manufacturer will give you an optimized system.

And, are the contractors equally certified?  Not only education and experience but certifications from the various manufacturers who's parts they want to use.  And, will their installations be the same?  Will they open trenches all around your yard and be a week getting the stuff layed, connected and back-filled?  Or, will they pull the flexible pipe and be in 'n out in one day with water flowing to cover their intrussion before they leave that day?

Will your system need to be blown out with pressurized air at the end of the season to avoid winter freeze and bursts or will it drain automagically?

I know, I took your simple question and made it hard.

When I bought my system about 9 years ago, I had a variety of estimates and the differences sortta fell into the mess I listed above.  The low estimate was a person who seemed to be from the "get it in the ground and fix it later" school.

The highest estimate was from someone who seemed more concerned about my yard and the final result than I was.  The low person was using parts 'n pieces from a variety of manufacturers.  The high person was certified by the company that made all the parts he was wanting to use and he carried a fairly high rating from them for his past performance..  He would vary for me if I wanted but he had sound reasons from the controller to each of the heads as to why he preferred his "brand".

It doesn't look like you are a member of Angie's List.  Given the size of the investment you are looking at, this might be a great time to join and see how others in your community have rated the contractors you are considering or if there is one you should add to your list.

My yard is between 12 and 15,000 square feet less the house, deck, two mini-barns and it is interrupted with a number of blocking (blocks the stream of water) evergreens and planting beds.

The low estimate I had was about $2,500 and would take three days to put in from the time they began to trench.  I don't recall how many heads he wanted to put in but if it was off, he'd be able to put another anyplace and tie it to the nearest zone to give me good coverage.  Uh, this was the get it in the ground 'n adjust later person.

The high estimate I had was around $4,500.  This proposal was for seven active zones each having 5 to 7 heads.  There was enough capacity (extra zone controllers and space within the system controller) built in to add drip irrigation at a later date for the planting beds without having to replace anything.  He drew the entire yard and gave me a copy with the heads marked showing the "throw" of each and the overlap he built in to avoid any missed areas.  And, they wanted to arrive in the morning and leave that evening with the system watering to cover their tracks throughout the yard.  One day and they would not leave until it was working as advertised!

I took the high estimate.  I have a neighbor who bought from the other folks.  Both of us are happy.  He is really happy because each time he calls his company for adjustments or corrections (yep, they got it in the ground and are still putzing with it) they are out within the week, they are really easy to do business with and their service calls' costs haven't gone up a whole bunch.

Sorry, you can't look at the price and divide by X number of heads and have a fair comparison.

1) IF you are talking the root crown - the portion where it is not one solid truck or "bole", but still a solid or near-solid mass of roots coming off the base of the trunk, then that has to come out on way or another. Typically, once you get beyond about a 3 foot circle then you are in the radial portion of the roots where they spread out laterally, and are a foot or more apart, and new roots can grow in that area fro the new tree OK. Of course, be prepared to have to trim some volunteers so the old tree can't come back, and be sure to fertilize the new tree per recommendations because the old roots will still be trying to extract water and food from the soil to support the tree that they do not yet realize is gone. Do NOT put stump killer or poison in the old tree - will kill new one too.

2) The proper commercial way to do this is to have the entire root crown and larger roots removed with a stump grinder - looks like this -

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/build-yourself/117273d1230307978-stump-grinder-questions-stumpgrinderred.jpg

You need a tree service that can grind down at least two feet below ground level and remove the root crown and larger root segments. If you hve large roots running laterally quite a ways, he can grind them up too - ditto to "trippers" sticking up above ground. Just be sure to have it clear (spray painted) upfront how far he is going for what he quoted - typically about $150 for tree up to 1-2 feet in diameter, up to $500 for a massive sycamore or walnut or cottonwood or redwood with 6 foot diameter crown. While you can rent stump grinders at tooll rental places, I REALLY do not recommend it - the rental ones you can afford to rent for one use are pretty light duty, and they can chew a person up in no time flat if you lose control when it snags in the wood or hits a rock.

3) Another way is to go out to where the massive roots taper off to something you can reasonable cut - say 4-6 inches in diameter, and cut them all in a circle around the stump, then with a come-along or CAREFULLY (not more than a few hundred pounds) with a vehicle with a trailer hitch, put a steady pull on a good rope or strap or chain in a shallow notch cut around the top of the stump (so it does not pop off easy), then while it is being rotated up out of the ground walk around and cut any root you see still attached or trying to lift out of the ground. This works much better if the stump is left about 4-6 feet high so you get some real leverage on it with the pull, but if already cut down short run chain or strap over the top of it and around a large root on the far side of the stump. I use a Sawzall with foot long coarse tooth wood cutting blade for this - goes through roots really fast, and blade is only $1 or so apiece so ruining one or two hitting rocks is no big thing, and also reaches in under the stump better and safer than an axe. I helped a neighbor take out a back yard full of birches this way - took us about half a day to remove about 15 trees with about 6 foot diameter circle of crown and roots, leaving holes about 1-2 feet deep where each tree was. Remember this - whichever way you use to take it out, you will need maybe 1-5 wheelbarrow loads of good growth medium to replace the divot.

4) Cheaper route - cut off flush with ground level (or leave some stickup as a planter or stool or feeder base or whatever), and plant new tree at least 4 feet away from old crown, in a spot between the old roots.

'Reasonable' is one of those words that means wildly divergent things to different people.  Check with your local high school to see if they have  any sort of agricultural program.  If yes, perhaps someone in that program could help you.  Being a landscaper myself, I must say it sounds like you want something that is - first and foremost - cheap.   This is NOT the best way to look for any service.  You would be better served looking for 'competant' than with 'cheap'.  The nicer you want your flowerbed to look, the more important it is to find someone who REALLY knows what they are doing.

They did an amazing job, cleaned much more of my yard than I thought possible for 8 hours of work. It took a while to get the work scheduled but that was due to uncooperative weather. Would definitely use them again.

Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
was the Sales Associate that responded to the inquiry for backyard landscaping on homeadvisor.com. She needed constant prompting to have the landscape designer come out to do measurements. From the time the designer came to look at the backyard to the appointment to review her plans was 3 weeks. At that appointment we made significant changes to their original plan due to price constraints (they wanted approximately $14000 for landscaping a less than 1000 sq. ft backyard including using existing concrete and irrigation). All of the pricing was spelled out, but some of the calculations for things like plants seemed very arbitrary and expensive ($175 for a flat of thyme for ground cover is ridiculous). Regardless, we paid $500 for the plans and put down an earnest deposit and they assured us at that time that they could begin the landscape work within 2 weeks. We needed to make sure that the date they began was relatively assured as we needed time to completely clear the backyard in preparation for the work to begin.
2 weeks goes by and we hear nothing. Then 3 weeks. After constant calls,
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
finally gets back in contact with us and assures us that the foreman would come by on the first day of construction the next Monday. We both take the day off from work in order to ensure that the plans were revised per our meeting almost a month prior and that we are all on the same page since getting any communication from
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
at that point was almost impossible. The date of construction comes and goes with no one showing up and no communication from anyone at
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
until 3 pm that day to tell us that now the date to begin was Thursday. We both wasted a day off and at that point we were so upset at the lack of communication and respect that we almost called the whole thing off. But we had already put an earnest deposit down and were afraid we wouldn't get our money back if we cancelled.
A few days later the workers show up to begin, albeit unannounced. Thankfully, I was home and was able to look at their plans....which happened to be the wrong plans that reflected none of the changes made. The workers themselves were very respectful and hard-working. We were both so angry at our dealings with
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
that I'm sure they felt caught in the middle, especially when we realized that there were working off of incorrect plans. We think the landscape workers themselves were honest and did a great job. That is probably the only
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
of sunshine in this experience.
Multiple attempts to contact someone at this company other than
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
were ignored. We felt like we were in the dark about most of the process, the timelines given were a farce, the plans were incorrect and we did not feel our concerns were responded to appropriately.
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
at one point accused me of being "hysterical" about the timing and her lack of communication. My wife works night shift and was sleeping in a bedroom right next to where construction was being done...it was important to us to know when people would be working so she could move to another room to sleep if needed. I don't think asking to know when people are going to be jackhammering, talking, or digging right outside your bedroom window while you are trying to sleep is being hysterical.
We would never use this company again and would not recommend them to any hard-working people who don't have 1000s of dollars or time to waste. Dealing with this company was an effort in frustration.

It was incredible; best money we've spent thus far.
We bought a 20 acre lot that needed a 2000' driveway, a 50'x65' barn, and 80'x156' riding arena laid out. Our earthworks folks said "don't worry, a little brush won't slow us down", the County said (in essence) "you'll need silt fence and hydro-seeding to repair the clearing" (~$20k!!)... we needed another solution.
We called
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
, he walked the lot and gave us a thoughtful estimate, and then we had him out to do the work. He showed up on time, worked efficiently, and when he was done it looked like magic. It looked like you'd run a field mower over an existing path/clearing (except it was a jungle when he started!).
Best part is that we didn't have to do any silt fencing/hydro-seeding because there was nicely-mowed vegetation everywhere. Instead of ripping things up as an excavator does, he mowed it down into an insignificant mulch.
Thanks for coming out

Mr.
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
, Project Manager arrived timely, looked over the backyard area, discussed various alternatives and asked what I had in mind. Thereafter he spent time measuring and then advised he would prepare a detailed landscape plan for me. I also advised
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
that I wanted to redo my deck expanding it with cement and flagstone, as well as reinforcing the wooden second floor deck. He referred me to a competent contractor that later visited and provided a wealth of good ideas. In early March,
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
provided the landscape plan. It is to scale and well defined as to work to be done. It will make a beautiful backyard. I'm still reviewing the plants to be installed, but
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
's idea of dry river bed will make the backyard a showplace and I fully intend to proceed with that part. I might do the plants myself, but I have not made a final decision on that as yet. On March 13th I was provided a revised plan per our discussions and detailed report containing costs involved to include offered discounts. I've shown the plan to friends and they're all impressed with the design as am I. Mr
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
, The
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
company, came out and did an outstanding job. The presentation is superior in every way. I'm looking forward to working with this company and having a beautiful backyard. Gaining this outstanding insight is money well spent!

I can't recommend

A lot of strutting around with big ideas, a lot of no response to our questions. The person sent out was .... arrogant, oblivious to reality, refused to listen to our project goals, failed to respond ... (e-mail? What's that?) offensive, did I mention arrogant and condescending? Run for your life. There is no value here. Wasted money. and a rush home from work for this? Charlatan .................................................

It went great,
Mocksville Landscapers Provider Name Locked
responded to my request for service on Thumbtack.com within 20 minutes and came by to give me an estimate 2 hours later, when I was available. He was quick and too the point and his prices are very reasonable. He even cleaned up my yard and noticed that my pond pump wasn't working, and kindly offered to replace it with another one I had. He pressure washed my large patio and even did the patio furniture that desperately needed it. He was fast, prompt and very professional. He had all of his own tools and did a great job. I would recommend and will be using him for bi-weekly lawn care, which he charges about $45 for an average size yard.
