Radon reduction systems help keep radon levels at home low. The EPA says such systems can reduce radon levels up to 99 percent. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Benjamin S.)

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that occurs as a decay byproduct of uranium and thorium. Radon forms naturally in the environment, and low levels can be detected in soil, rock and ground water. Homeowners that inhale radon are at risk of lung cancer and even death.

Radon Testing reviews in Durham

I first contacted
Durham Radon Mitigation Experts Provider Name Locked
in January 2014 because they list St. Cloud, MN as a service area and because the MN Department of Health listed them as a certified Minnesota Radon Contractor. This was right after MN passed legislation requiring the seller in real estate transactions to disclose to the buyer a description of radon testing, concentrations or mitigation pertaining to the property. As a short term test revealed somewhat high levels of radon at the property I decided to purchase, I contracted with
Durham Radon Mitigation Experts Provider Name Locked
to mitigate or reduce the radon level to an acceptable level. After a March 2014 installation of the radon-reduction system in my home by

, several follow-up tests revealed the radon level was reduced but not to the low level guaranteed by

knew of the issue I simply waited for them to suggest a solution. After several months of waiting I contacted them in June and asked what they would do next and they said they would install a larger suction fan. It then took until October for the larger fan to be installed and for the radon level to be reduced to the level they guaranteed in March. So it basically took SEVEN MONTHS for them to complete the work. As a final misstep on their part, they did not provide me with a written guarantee as promised in the contract until I asked.
To be fair the installation work was neat and the radon-reduction system does work as promised. However, for the amount of money charged I did expect far better customer service and attention to detail than I received.

Durham Radon Mitigation Experts Provider Name Locked
was very informative and was able to answer all of my questions. He took his time and included me in the inspection by showing me his findings. Email report was provided within an hour of concluding the inspections. Very professional.

Durham Radon Mitigation Experts Provider Name Locked
is extremely professional and precise. We actually used them because of a referral from a company who is trained by them.
Durham Radon Mitigation Experts Provider Name Locked
was recommended because of the size of our home (4800 sq ft) and distance the system had to travel: from the farthest area of our basement, to the opposite end of our house, and up through the garage roof. Holes in the roof and walls needed to be made. They did a superior job. Since the system was installed, we've had no problems. I did make one call to the company when we had trouble with our sump pump (which is sealed because of the system.) They were able to answer my questions over the phone. The price is extremely reasonable, especially compared to what I've heard other homeowners have paid for them in smaller homes.

The gave me an estimate over the phone to install a system in the basement of my home. I contacted them twice after to clarify the details of the contract and then hired them to install the system.
I spoke to the owner a few times who "jokingly" told me he had recorded in his files that I "asked a lot of questions." When the installer came to the house, he seemed annoyed that I was asking about his plans for installation seemed even more annoyed that I would check in every now and then. When the test came back and the radon levels were not much lower than before, they got very defensive and came up with a lot of excuses and told me to wait until later and test again.
I hired this company based on their experience in NJ, but I get the impression they do so many of these for mostly real estate transactions (which are quick one time tests). I cannot tell you how many times they asked me if this was for a real estate sale. I asked them why it mattered but I never got an answer.
Bottom line: they were on time, on estimate/budget and neat with their work - but their customer service is pretty bad. I wish that they had listened to me and what I (the customer) wanted for my home. They would have heard that I was willing to pay them to come back and do more work to lower the radon level even more. At times they appeared arrogant. I should have known when they never visited the house to create the estimate that it appears to me, they prefer to do quick installations like for real estate transactions. I will hire another (more customer focused) company to come back and do what we wanted.
- James K.

The provider did a very good job of diagnosing the problem, recommending the solution and scheduling the work. The radon system failure had caused other problems with water leaks and since the new system was installed we've had no problems at all. The workers showed up on time and completed the work as expected. They were courteous and professional. Would definitely recommend them.
- Kerry K.

Radon system was fine.
installers forgot to connect the french drain tracks to the actual holding wells. we called for days and weeks before someone actually came back out to fix it. Owner claimed he would be there himself to police and no showed the second go around. lastly, as our waterproofing consultants they failed to point out our leaking line from main. basement is still wet. all around a bad! experience.
- Eddy R.

From the time they came out for the estimate to the time of installation was not long at all...actually I put them off a bit. They were very clean, punctual, and professional. BTW, I received several estimates and met several companies. Radon Rid and another were on the top of my list, but I chose Radon Rid in the end because of the installation process and materials used.
We did NOT do this because we were moving, rather because we are staying here and wanted to make sure we were safe in our basement. Whether the amount of time we spend in the basement will subject us to cancer or not is NOT something I wanted to risk for $1100. Plus we know that when we move we will have to pay for one, so why not

the benefits of the product before "giving" to the next owner.
The fan hummed a bit and we figured we would have to get used to it, but it continued to get

. I called about 2-3 weeks after installation concerned with the increased noise we were hearing. They were out the next day to diagnose the problem - defective fan. They were back the next day or 2 with a new fan. We had to put our hands on it to know that it was actually working.
In summary, great experience and you can't hear the noise from the fan either...which is just outside our family room window. Great job and I would definitely recommend Radon Rid.

The guys were very punctual and professional. They removed their shoes at the door, and after they left, the only

of their visit was the suction point(s) in the basement. After our initial post mitigation test came back close to 2 pCi/L, they promptly ran another more sophisticated test that tracked levels hour by hour and confirmed the slightly elevated levels. Thereafter, they returned to install a second suction point, bringing the radon level down to the desired level.
Durham Radon Mitigation Experts Provider Name Locked
was on top of the whole process from the very beginning, promptly answer my questions and responding to emails. He also stayed on top of the follow-up testing, proactively suggesting next steps and promptly scheduling any additional work.
This is an area where really
Durham Radon Mitigation Experts Provider Name Locked
differentiates themselves from the competition. With the recent law changes, I think some companies believe they can get away with proving a lower level of service. We contacted several other companies before hiring
Durham Radon Mitigation Experts Provider Name Locked
, some didn't even return calls and others didn't respond to follow-up questions after providing the estimate.
Durham Radon Mitigation Experts Provider Name Locked
not only had the best price we found (they quoted a flat fee for homes like ours), but also exceptional customer service. I've already recommended them to several other friends and neighbors.
