"
and crew were great. They came out and finished the job in 2 days despite the poor guys getting rained on most the time. Wall looks good" and everything was very smooth and painless. Will use again and definitely recommend to anyone looking for landscaping.

"I wish I could give a G rating for this company. These guys were hired by my neighbor...NOT ME... and they completely covered my property with eucalyptus tree branches/leaves," trampled and destroyed 7 of my plants next to my driveway due to walking on and dragging huge branches over my planting, they dented my rain spout, knocked off at least 6-7 of my rain gutter covering, knocked of some of the stucco siding of my house and crushed a small fence that I made and installed in the back yard for my dog....and yes I DID NOT EVEN HIRE THESE GUYS. A neighbor called me at work and said that I should come home because there were branches all over my yard, garage and driveway. When I got home I could not pull in because my driveway was covered in debris. The supervisor,
, was immediately defensive and rude and when I started to complain and ask why he was on MY PROPERTY AT ALL, he threw up his hands and said fine they will stop and leave and started to walk away. Not wanting to mess up the agreement that my neighbor had negotiated with him for work (and I did not know what was planned/agreed upon), I GENTLY touched his arm as he walked away and I said "wait a minute" to which he pulled back, put both of his hands up in the air and YELLED "don't TOUCH ME." I asked if he had
approval for this project and he said he did (a lie I later found out). My neighbor who hired them also had some shingles from his home siding broken off. This guy has a HUGE chip on his shoulder. A little bit of research later I found out that his state license expired in 2014, he has a Better Business Bureau score of F, he has an
(International Society of Arboriculture) logo on his business card, but a
for his name as a member on their website was not found, and finally his whopping 1.5 star rating on YELP. After this incident I spoke with several of my neighbors and was told that this company was going door to door, declaring that they were working on behalf of our home owners association, and if they were hired, the home owners would not need to get
approval. Follow up with our home owners association found that also to be a lie, and they confirmed they had heard this from other home owners. After I complained, they removed the majority of the debris and they did clean my roof, BUT, I DID NOT HIRE these guys, and then had to let them on my property and on the roof of my home to clean up their mess. They replaced the rain spout covers but have not repaired or replaced my dented rain spout or the damaged stucco. They also have not returned my calls regarding replacement of my smashed fence and the trampled plants which
said he would replace. We also had brand new sidewalks installed in August 2014, this work was done 12/14 and has left large dirty scrapes and discolorations on these sidewalks. PLEASE, save yourself the heartache and headache and DO NOT hire these guys. Even if they give you a "good price" (which they really didn't from what I have heard) you will wind up paying more in the long run. Please view these photos I posted on YELP of their work. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/

Finding the right landscaper can help ensure your yard is taken care of to perfection. (Photo by Katie Jacewicz)

How to find the right landscaper

There are several things to look for when hiring someone to work in your landscape.

Landscaping

Landscaping your property can be a major undertaking, and a long-lasting one. Start with a clear plan of what you want to achieve, then decide what parts you want to do yourself and what would require a professional. If you're thinking of selling your home, a bit of landscaping can give it the 'curb appeal' it needs.

I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

?

One of the more difficult issues facing you will be making sure you compare apples 'n apples while understanding the differences between apples 'n oranges.

Some things common to all:

How far from your (water) meter pit to the home?

Do you know what sort of water pressure you have?

Those two questions sortta drive the rest.  How many sprinklers you have is a piece of the puzzle but it is lower on the issues list than how much water pressure and gallons per minute of flow (gpm) you have.  Knowing the water pressure and gpm coming to the house is important because it is the info divided by the flow rate of the heads to tell you how many you can run at a time.

That, plus the number of heads it takes to cover your yard will let them decide on how many zones to cut the yard into (each zone is X number of heads that run at the same time).

Will the different estimates be for systems that are all parts from a single manufaturer or will it be a collection of brands?  Some will tell you that the parts (controller, back-flow, heads and even specific heads) are better from different manufacturers while others will tell you that all from a single manufacturer will give you an optimized system.

And, are the contractors equally certified?  Not only education and experience but certifications from the various manufacturers who's parts they want to use.  And, will their installations be the same?  Will they open trenches all around your yard and be a week getting the stuff layed, connected and back-filled?  Or, will they pull the flexible pipe and be in 'n out in one day with water flowing to cover their intrussion before they leave that day?

Will your system need to be blown out with pressurized air at the end of the season to avoid winter freeze and bursts or will it drain automagically?

I know, I took your simple question and made it hard.

When I bought my system about 9 years ago, I had a variety of estimates and the differences sortta fell into the mess I listed above.  The low estimate was a person who seemed to be from the "get it in the ground and fix it later" school.

The highest estimate was from someone who seemed more concerned about my yard and the final result than I was.  The low person was using parts 'n pieces from a variety of manufacturers.  The high person was certified by the company that made all the parts he was wanting to use and he carried a fairly high rating from them for his past performance..  He would vary for me if I wanted but he had sound reasons from the controller to each of the heads as to why he preferred his "brand".

It doesn't look like you are a member of Angie's List.  Given the size of the investment you are looking at, this might be a great time to join and see how others in your community have rated the contractors you are considering or if there is one you should add to your list.

My yard is between 12 and 15,000 square feet less the house, deck, two mini-barns and it is interrupted with a number of blocking (blocks the stream of water) evergreens and planting beds.

The low estimate I had was about $2,500 and would take three days to put in from the time they began to trench.  I don't recall how many heads he wanted to put in but if it was off, he'd be able to put another anyplace and tie it to the nearest zone to give me good coverage.  Uh, this was the get it in the ground 'n adjust later person.

The high estimate I had was around $4,500.  This proposal was for seven active zones each having 5 to 7 heads.  There was enough capacity (extra zone controllers and space within the system controller) built in to add drip irrigation at a later date for the planting beds without having to replace anything.  He drew the entire yard and gave me a copy with the heads marked showing the "throw" of each and the overlap he built in to avoid any missed areas.  And, they wanted to arrive in the morning and leave that evening with the system watering to cover their tracks throughout the yard.  One day and they would not leave until it was working as advertised!

I took the high estimate.  I have a neighbor who bought from the other folks.  Both of us are happy.  He is really happy because each time he calls his company for adjustments or corrections (yep, they got it in the ground and are still putzing with it) they are out within the week, they are really easy to do business with and their service calls' costs haven't gone up a whole bunch.

Sorry, you can't look at the price and divide by X number of heads and have a fair comparison.

1) IF you are talking the root crown - the portion where it is not one solid truck or "bole", but still a solid or near-solid mass of roots coming off the base of the trunk, then that has to come out on way or another. Typically, once you get beyond about a 3 foot circle then you are in the radial portion of the roots where they spread out laterally, and are a foot or more apart, and new roots can grow in that area fro the new tree OK. Of course, be prepared to have to trim some volunteers so the old tree can't come back, and be sure to fertilize the new tree per recommendations because the old roots will still be trying to extract water and food from the soil to support the tree that they do not yet realize is gone. Do NOT put stump killer or poison in the old tree - will kill new one too.

2) The proper commercial way to do this is to have the entire root crown and larger roots removed with a stump grinder - looks like this -

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/build-yourself/117273d1230307978-stump-grinder-questions-stumpgrinderred.jpg

You need a tree service that can grind down at least two feet below ground level and remove the root crown and larger root segments. If you hve large roots running laterally quite a ways, he can grind them up too - ditto to "trippers" sticking up above ground. Just be sure to have it clear (spray painted) upfront how far he is going for what he quoted - typically about $150 for tree up to 1-2 feet in diameter, up to $500 for a massive sycamore or walnut or cottonwood or redwood with 6 foot diameter crown. While you can rent stump grinders at tooll rental places, I REALLY do not recommend it - the rental ones you can afford to rent for one use are pretty light duty, and they can chew a person up in no time flat if you lose control when it snags in the wood or hits a rock.

3) Another way is to go out to where the massive roots taper off to something you can reasonable cut - say 4-6 inches in diameter, and cut them all in a circle around the stump, then with a come-along or CAREFULLY (not more than a few hundred pounds) with a vehicle with a trailer hitch, put a steady pull on a good rope or strap or chain in a shallow notch cut around the top of the stump (so it does not pop off easy), then while it is being rotated up out of the ground walk around and cut any root you see still attached or trying to lift out of the ground. This works much better if the stump is left about 4-6 feet high so you get some real leverage on it with the pull, but if already cut down short run chain or strap over the top of it and around a large root on the far side of the stump. I use a Sawzall with foot long coarse tooth wood cutting blade for this - goes through roots really fast, and blade is only $1 or so apiece so ruining one or two hitting rocks is no big thing, and also reaches in under the stump better and safer than an axe. I helped a neighbor take out a back yard full of birches this way - took us about half a day to remove about 15 trees with about 6 foot diameter circle of crown and roots, leaving holes about 1-2 feet deep where each tree was. Remember this - whichever way you use to take it out, you will need maybe 1-5 wheelbarrow loads of good growth medium to replace the divot.

4) Cheaper route - cut off flush with ground level (or leave some stickup as a planter or stool or feeder base or whatever), and plant new tree at least 4 feet away from old crown, in a spot between the old roots.

'Reasonable' is one of those words that means wildly divergent things to different people.  Check with your local high school to see if they have  any sort of agricultural program.  If yes, perhaps someone in that program could help you.  Being a landscaper myself, I must say it sounds like you want something that is - first and foremost - cheap.   This is NOT the best way to look for any service.  You would be better served looking for 'competant' than with 'cheap'.  The nicer you want your flowerbed to look, the more important it is to find someone who REALLY knows what they are doing.

near our garage. The crew renovated approximately 1,360 sq ft. of alleyway. The crew used some 10 cubic yards of gravel which was compacted with sand to make a level road surface. Because of the alleyway upgrade, we’re able to park our car in the garage and to access our backyard easily from the alleyway.

, who owns
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
, has provided garden and coy pond services for us for about 10 years. He and his team installed beautiful gardens and a large coy pond with 2 water falls in our back yard turning our outdoor space into total luxury. We couldn't ask for more from
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
in terms of service - in fact, we had a particularly bad storm right before our 4th of

Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
came out very early the morning of

. They had some really good ideas which dressed up the property in the front and back yards. They have a very good follow up program which keeps the areas looking their best year round. Workers are diligent and careful with the property. They are good listeners and will work with your plans in mind. They have done other work in the area and we would highly recommend them.

It's not always easy to write reviews which are fair and informative. My goal in using
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
Landscaping last fall was to get the house ready for sale the following spring.
Pros:
1.
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
was very helpful in providing end of season planting options. He was also very patient considering I was unprepared to make important decisions. I would not have blamed him had he wanted to back out of the job. He alerted me when it became too late in the year to do this part of the project.
2.
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
discovered a problem with the flashing between the roof and siding saying that a prior contractor should have climbed a ladder for a closer inspection. A subsequent roofing contractor confirmed
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
's observation.
3.
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
educated me on pop ups to drain downspouts and how to eliminate downspout extensions.
4. I was grateful that the grading and drainage work could be squeezed into their schedule before winter.
Cons:
1. My biggest concern was the use of a heavy backhoe to dig trenches and holes and carry dirt in my small yard. In the past another contractor made ruts in the lawn using a little Bobcat bulldozer. Another contractor protected the lawn with plywood for the Bobcat to run on. When I expressed my concern,
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
told me the backhoe only weighed 1200 pounds. I have a small yard and the Kuboda 4690 seemed liked overkill (see picture). Ehow lists the weight of the unit with a full tank of gas and an average man to be in excess of 3000 pounds- not including the weight of the dirt. As a result there were ruts in the lawn. While I was assured the yard "would come back" in the spring,
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
agreed to fill in the ruts and seed the area. Also, the backhoe kept running over the bare garden bed- compacting the soil. He said it would not hurt it as it was dormant, that he had to do it to avoid putting more ruts in the lawn.
2. Sometimes communication was a challenge in spite of a written proposal. Emailed questions did not always receive responses. Also, It would have been helpful for the proposal to include more specifics about the plants. Finally, a diagram of the proposed pop ups in the front yard (including the downspouts that tied into them) would have been helpful. This was clarified only after I mapped it out on paper on the day the work was done.
3. Another concern was the number and selection of the proposed plants. After researching the plants, including their mature height and width, it appeared that the beds would become very overcrowded over time. Perhaps this was an attempt to have the planting beds look better in the spring (short term) when the house would be up for sale.
Cost: it's hard to judge cost. Two young men worked hard most of the day.
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
was there part of the day.
Use again? I am not sure whether I would use
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
again for my project. Now that the hard work has been completed, I may look for a less expensive way to get the planting done.

Geovani
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
called and scheduled to meet at our home to discuss what we would like. Based on "The Big Deal" I understood that I would have an evaluation and subsequent plan prepared.
Upon his visit, Geovani informed us that he didn't do hardscapes despite the description "Deal could be used for a new stone/paver patio or walkway, outdoor kitchen, fire pit,
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and much more" We indicated we were interested in an overall plan and may be able to insert those elements into the design ourselves. I was sent an e mail from
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
providing me with an estimate and plant list which required approval.
I expressed some hesitation with regard to some of their selections and conducted a dialogue with
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
about native plantings and other considerations. I followed up and have not heard again from
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
.
I found their plant offerings to rather generic and would ask that they refund the $59 since they haven't fulfilled their commitment.
Perhaps I misunderstood the process or what I purchased but we've since contracted another landscape designer.

I left a message for
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and he responded quickly and we set up a meeting for him to come see the site and talk over my ideas for landscaping. He showed up on time and was very easy to get along with, patiently listening to my ideas. He was very agreeable to my overall idea of the plan (multi-
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
crepe myrtles with climbing roses on the wall behind, with several large boulders throughout California native/drought-tolerant plants) and he could help select plants/design to fill in the details. I had previously talked with 3-4 other landscapers who either didn't do "small" projects (95' x 7' is not small!) or they didn't have the capabilities (or didn't want) to install the large boulders i was envisioning (ie: trucking them from
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
/field and renting a bobcat to place them). I was relieved that
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
didn't even blink at my boulder idea, since they were a big part of my plan. I wasn't in a rush, so after a couple weeks, he submitted a bid. I was disappointed because It was significantly over my planned budget. Over the course of a few weeks we talked back and forth about how to modify the landscaping to get it closer to my budget. Admittedly, I was a little unrealistic about how much my plan was going to cost.
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
was very patient and gracious in working with me to an agreeable budget and scope of work. Once we agreed upon that, he submitted an illustrated plan on paper with full color photos and descriptions of the plants he wanted to use. Knowing a bit about plants/gardening, I am a bit picky with what goes in, so we swapped out a few that I wasn't thrilled with. Again,
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
took my substitutions in stride.
We agreed on a start date. Every day,
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and his guys showed up right on time and got right to work. The guys were very professional and friendly. They didn't mind that I stood there watching them for most of the time! Placing the boulders was an arduous task and the guys were very patient with my precision placement of each enormous boulder, flipping & turing to get it just how I wanted. After rolling out the weed
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
,
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and I went through and placed all the plants - moving and adjusting just so. Then when we gave them the go-ahead, they planted them just as they were placed - adding mulch & fertilizer tablets. They finished up with the irrigation and the pea-gravel. All said and done, it took them 3 days to accomplish.
My only gripe was that the installer guys didn't double-check the valve and emitter settings before they left - they had left the sprinklers running and I didn't catch it until the next day. Also, the valve was leaking a good amount. (not looking forward to next month's water bill!!!) I texted
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and he came out the next day and fixed it. Being paranoid, I went out and checked all the 50+ emitters at each plant. They were all on the lowest setting and some were turned off completely! Not good for new plants (especially water-loving roses and crepe myrtles!) So, I went around and adjusted them all myself. I'm still not convinced how effective the emitters are, but I'll give them time and see how it goes.
Also, the Angie's List Coupon is not worded correctly - while he gave me a bit of a discount,
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
only gives 10% discount above a certain amount. Be sure to ask him beforehand.
All said and done, I really enjoyed working with
Clayton Landscapers Provider Name Locked
and his crew. Very professional and easy to get along with. He may not be the cheapest in town, but they work hard and are willing to work with you to make your project come together nicely. Thanks guys!! Can't wait for Spring!
