Raleigh dance instructors discuss the lessons they offer

What styles of dancing do you teach?

Melanie Dale: "All of the European dances and American-style dances."

Cynthia Blevins: "Ballet, tap, jazz and hip-hop."

Boleyn Willis-Zeger: "We teach aerial dance, flamenco, swing, salsa, ballet, hip-hop, acrobatics, Broadway-style tap, line dance, jazz, modern and Irish dance."

How do you charge for dance lessons and what's the cost?

Dale: "Group lessons are $58 per month, and private lessons are pay-as-you-go. The general cost [for private lessons] is around $75 an hour."

Blevins: "For adults, I charge $46 per month or they can take a drop-in lesson, which is $15 per one-hour class."

Willis-Zeger: "By the hour. Lessons range from $7 to $15 per hour. For drop-in classes, a one-hour class is $18; a 90-minute class is $22; and a two-hour class is $25."

Do you offer any types of packages? If so, can you give a few examples and the price?

Dale: "It's $72 per lesson for 10 lessons or $375 for five. We suggest they take a combination of group and private lessons."

Blevins: "If they take more classes, they pay less per class. For example, if they take two classes a week, it's $88."

Willis-Zeger: "The more classes you take the less you pay. In the spring, students can pay for classes in advance and receive a discount."

How far in advance does someone need to schedule lessons with you before they can start?

Dale: "Usually a week. I try to fit them in, but the instructors are sometimes really booked up."

Blevins: "They can show up and take a class."

Willis-Zeger: "You can come in today."

How do you handle the most dancing-challenged clients?

Dale: "You just get them moving to the music; they have to be able to hear the music and step to the beat. We have to make it fun and easy."

Blevins: "A lot of one-on-one and going over the steps slowly. We break it down step by step, sometimes giving visual clues."

Willis-Zeger: "With a lot of humor and patience. I enjoy teaching folks who think there's no way on God's green earth, because there's always a way."
