"Horrible Experience !!!!! Should have been an easy install for an experienced company, as the camera locations were already prewired during my buildout. Angel, the" owner, came right out immediately and did a great sales job on the estimate. I was promised 1080 perfect vision on 3 camera installations and viewing on manager I phones and I pads. Immediately there were issues with the firewall. Angel said I needed to call corporate and get them to create a solution or I would have to buy another router for a work around. After several calls to corporate trying to fix, Angel finally figured out a fix on my Verizon router. Okay, it's a Verizon router, pretty common, but it's ok now. Then, I find out, after being promised during the sales presentation, my computer had plenty of storage for the recordings, it was running out after several weeks of recordings. After many calls and emails and begging help from Angel, He tells me that can be fixed with more memory which will cost me more. I don't want to spend more so he comes in and changes the cameras out and reduces the resolution so now the view is blurry on all 3. I live with this because I can not afford to spend more. Now one of the cameras die, just several months later. I call and send emails and beg some more to get it fixed. He gives excuses again and does not fix, so I'm done. This owner is inexperienced in installation and you can forget service after the sale. One of my most disappointing vendor experiences in my 40 years of business.

I second the original question (still unanswered). Speaking as someone who logged in today to try to find an attorney, I see this category as one that's exactly what I have my Angie's List membership for:

1. It's important that I find a good one
2. I'm not an expert enough to know myself who is a good one
3. The industry is full of advertisements and misinformation
4. I wish I knew what experiences other people have had

I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

I'm not sure Angie et. al. want you to have a complete answer to this question. By re-subscribing at the Indiana State Fair in 2012, I think I paid $20.00 per year for a multi- year subscription. Maybe even less. At the other extreme--and I hope my memory isn't faulty about this--I think the price, for my area, for ONE year was an outrageous $70.00. And they debited me automatically without warning. I had to opt out of that automatic charge. I like Angie's List, but if some of the companies they monitor behaved the way they do in this respect, they'd be on some sort of Pages of Unhappiness. I'll be interested to see if this comment gets published or censored out of existence.

That's very difficult to answer without seeing the house. As one poster said, the prep is the most important part. On newer homes that don't have a lot of peeling paint, the prep can be very minimal even as low as a couple or a few hundred dollars for the prep labor.

On a 100 year old home with 12 coats of peeling paint on it, then the prep costs can be very high and can easily exceed 50% of the job's labor cost.

A 2100 sq ft two story home could easily cost $1000 just for the labor to prep for the paint job. That number could climb too. Throw in lots of caullking  or window glazing, and you could be talking a couple or a few hundred dollars more for labor.

Painting that home with one coat of paint and a different color on the trim could run roughly $1000 or more just for labor. Add a second coat  and that could cost close to another $1000 for labor.

For paint, you may need 20 gallons of paint. You can pay from $30-$70 for a gallon of good quality exterior paint. The manufacturer of the paint should be specified in any painting contract. Otherwise, the contractor could bid at a Sherwin-Williams $60 per gallon paint and then paint the house with $35 Valspar and pocket the difference. $25 dollars per gallon times 20 gallons? That's a pretty penny too.

That was the long answer to your question. The short answer is $2000 to $4000 and up, depending upon the amount of prep, the number of coats, the amount of trim, and the paint used.


You have to put your self in the shoes of a business that is in business to turn a profit of some sort. All businesses have different overhead which in turn decides what their bottom line would be on their services. I personally would not go with an unlicensed professional for this type of install. You are messing with gas, venting issues, electrical wiring{electric water heater} and updated code issues such as a drain pan and tempature and relief drain lines for heaters that currently do not have them. I do agree that there are some companies that are way out of line for their installs but most of these companies are the really big companies that have very high overheads  I would assume. Tank type water heaters have changed over the last several years and with these safety changes come bigger prices. The price of steel thanks to China is skyrocketing and tank type water heaters are made of steel. Most wholesale plumbing supply companies cannot match what the big box stores are selling at retail to consumers. I happen to think from research that heaters such as Rheem, Bradford White and AOSmith who have been in business forever make a better product than what you can buy in the big box outlets. You also have to take in consideration the location of the water heater that is being replaced. Is it in the house, basement, garage or attic. Most 40 and 50 gallon water heaters that are purchased in a plumbing wholesale store in Texas cost between 300-340 for a 6 year warranty heater with 6 year on parts and tank. Speaking of warranty. Most big box companies will take a least 24 hours to a week to get your warranty problem taken care of. Most reputable plumbing companies will give same day service if they installed the heater.

So lets break down a typical install at cost to a licensed plumber in Texas

Heater: $315, water shut off $6.50, water flex lines or unions to code $20, gas flex line and cut off to code $12, misc fittings $15, Total $368.50 Lets add a 35% profit which is some what low  for a business $129, Total 497.50

This doesnt  include permits, pan and drain or any venting issues. The vent must go from the heater to the outside of roof using double wall vent.

Cost of permit on average $60

Most plumbing companies allow for 3 hours of time for a water heater. This includes picking the new one up. Delivering out to house. Draining and removing old water heater. Hauling off old heater. Installing new heater up to code. Going down to city and pulling permit.

Average Labor charges for heater installs $400

That would make this install run without extras on any code issues $957.50

I just had a 50 gallon gas water heater installed in my house for $1200 but I needed a pan installed. I used a licensed plumber.

An itemized list / cost breakdown, more often than not is used against the contractor when it is shared with other builders who will then beat it.

Good contractors use good people, and good people cost more.  Just the cost of having the appropriate insurance / bond can be the difference between winning a job or losing it ot a 'lower bid'.

It is the rule of three; there is Good, Cheap and Fast.  You can have any two:  Good and Cheap, won't be Fast; Good and Fast, won't be Cheap;  Cheap and Fast, won't be Good!

When comparing bids, it isn't the cheapest or the 'nicest' person you should select.   You should understand why there is a large price difference (it shows there are gaps in your design program or what you have asked for specifically, which means there may be arguments later).  If most of the bids are in line, and one is way high or way low,  you want to know why before dismissing or selecting them.

A price-only decision almost always costs more in the long run.

CPI misrepresents, steals, and has terrible customer service.
I am seething mad. Back in June (2015) I went through all of the rigamarole that goes along with trying to cancel service with CPI: waiting on hold for absorbent amounts of time, being transferred, being on hold again forever, and then being told I have to submit a signed letter to discontinue service. I submitted a signed letter requesting cancelation on June 9th, 2015.
But I was also told that if I cancel my service, a tech person will have to come by and remove the communication board from the system, which would make the entire system useless. I explained multiple times to multiple people (after being put on hold multiple times) that I was emphatically told by the CPI sales guy in 2008 that once my initial 3-year contract is over, the system is mine to keep and it will continue to work even without the communication board or monitoring service. Every person I spoke with at CPI acted like I was crazy, like I was making this up because they ALWAYS take the communication board, and without it, the system will not work.
I finally got so enraged and personally offended that I acquiesced just to get CPI out of my life. I was so furious (1) that a sleezy sales guy had pulled one over on me, and (2) that the company treated my like an idiot when I explained what THEIR salesperson had told me. So, I made an appointment for the tech guy to come get the communication board. But while the guy was starting to work on dismantling my system, I pulled out my original CPI contract and saw that I had actually forced the sales guy to put in writing his promise that the system would work even without the communication board. The entire interaction with the sales guy came back to me after seeing his promise in writing. I remember being suspicious of him, and I made him write out that the system would work without the communication before I would sign the contract.
I showed the tech guy the contract with the "additional terms to contract" that the sales guy wrote out. He was surprised. He actually took a picture of the contract and emailed it to his superiors. After a lot more waiting while the guy was on the phone with CPI cronies, he finally ended the call and conceded that CPI had screwed up. At that point, the guy left the communication board in the system and assured me that my service would be canceled without having to turn it in.
I thought the saga was over until last month (September) when I noticed that CPI had continued charging me $25 per month despite having canceled the contract in writing in June, never mind the craziness they put me through regarding the communication board. So, I called CPI and did a lot more waiting on hold forever only to be transferred somewhere else that required waiting on hold forever. After getting to the point of blowing my top AGAIN, someone finally figured out that CPI was, again, in the wrong. The guy apologized, assured me that my account would no longer be drafted, and promised that $75 for payments in

, August, and September would be refunded back into our checking account.
So, when I realized last week that I had been charged for yet another month of service and nothing had been refunded to my account, I went psychotic. I called CPI again and tried to remain calm. I waited again. I ended up hanging up on the original lady who asked me whether or not I wanted to continue service as I was absolutely speechless. Then she called back, apologized, and stated that she spoke with her supervisor who gave her permission to refund me $75, despite the fact that I had been charged for another month, and last month I had been promised the same amount. Great customer service. All of my questions were answered in a timely manner. The consultant I dealt with was Amrit Virk. He was incredibly helpful, and patient. I didn't feel pressured to purchase anything. I was provided with resources whenever I requested them. I used the Angie's List deal to get all the equipment (sensors, keypad, IQ panel, etc.). I've had the service for about 2 and a half months now, and the service has been great.
The only issues I've had is with the sensors. If the sensors are mounted on metal, there sometimes seems to be some interference that occurs. This causes the sensors to malfunction. This happened 3 times, one with a door, and twice with my garage door sensor. When I called them, they sent out replacements immediately. When we realized that the metal may be the issue, they sent out extra attachments to help. They test the sensors before hanging up.
Lastly, I know they're working on this, but they need to have online billing, and/or paper billing. I'd like to see, and perhaps edit my options and services.

While the telephone communication was well. To install the alarm system needed a lot of computer work so you needed to be good with a computer and it's a self instillation which wasn't really explained. The alarm sound when you open the door is very low and you have to hook up the system back to the computer to adjust anything on it.
