Small Appliances and Kitchen Gadgets

Small appliances play a big role in our daily lives. When shopping for microwave ovens, vacuums, toasters, mixers and more, choose appliances that fit your need and budget. When it comes to repairs, compare the cost of fixing to the cost of replacing the item.

Show your workhorse appliances a little TLC, and they may stick around a bit longer.

Buy water-based paints with low volatile organic compound levels (VOC). Basically, the less glossy the paint, the fewer VOCs it contains.

If you're preparing for a holiday or other event that requires a lot of home-cooking, take time in the weeks before the event to ensure that your major appliances are operating efficiently and will be able to handle the job. Here are five tips.

What's the secret to keeping your appliances alive and running over the ages? "Use your appliances regularly and read your manual," says one appliance repair expert.

If the ducts are venting through a window I'm assuming the duct work is all easily accessible.  Lowe's and Home Depot sell a cleaning kit that uses an electric drill to spin the brush as it goes through the ductwork.  I've found it to work quite well and you can do it yourself.  It may take a few passes the first time to get everything out if it has been a while since it was last cleaned.  Just make sure you get all of the loose lint out after running the brush through from both ends and you're good to go.  Please note that if the line is not hard but rather a flex duct line you can easily puncture a whole in it with this kit and will do better to clean it by hand.

As stated above, it can vary between companies.

Typically just an inspection implies you do not have a contract or agreement that may include discounts or free repairs.

With our company you would get the annual maintenace service that you should do every year, and if repairs are needed, they are extra, but you aviod paying a "service call charge" that would be related to most repairs, because you are paying for the "inspection" and we are already on site.

Inspections are often discounted in the slow seasons, and can usually be found advertised , at reduced prices , on Angie's List.

So consider Angie's List and find the best of the best in HVAC contractors!

Since you asked this question over a year ago, I'm pretty sure you've already made your decision but I'd like to offer you some advice.  You mentioned your husband vacuumed the coils and it worked for a couple more weeks.  Chances are the condenser coils were very dirty when he did this.  When refrigerator condenser coils are dirty, the compressor overheats and heat will cause a compressor to fail prematurely.  You should vacuum or blow out your condenser coils regularly.  Today's refrigerator compressors are not made to last like they were in the past.  I remember when it wasn't unusual for a compressor to last 30 years.  You won't see that happen with the way refrigerator compressors are made today.  Regular cleaning of your condenser coils is crucial in preventing premature failure of your compressor.  For more tips, check out my article here on Angie's list titled "How To Avoid Appliance Repairs"

CHOICE recommended

but they had a two week wait. I found a locall company that came out on the first day, within an hour, and came back as soon as I told them I had the OK from CHOICE, which only took one day. The ompany I used, All-Pro, did not want to deal with the warranty company so I had to do that but Choice was very accommodating. They emailed the forms and I faxed them back a d got the go ahead immediately.

was busy on a job when I called and asked if he could return my call. He returned the call and we played telephone tag, i.e. he called me back and I was not home. Then I called him back and he was busy on a job but called me back. This happened again and this time, when he called me back at about 9:30 this morning, I answered the call. He said he'd call about noon the same day. He called at 11:40AM and said he was on his way. Arrived at 12:20 and got right to work diagnosing the problem. He found the bad solenoid valve and went to his truck to see if he had on. He did not have the exact part but had a better one, with which he replaced the valve. It now works. He was punctual, professional, and persevered in trying to establish contact and help with my problem. The cost was reasonable, both in the cost quoted to come out and look at the problem and the final total cost for coming and having the work done. I would certainly use him again.

Very professional.

was thorough in his evaluation. Discussed each problem area and explained thoroughly what the problem was. However, two weeks have passed, no estimate. The deadline to submit the estimate for repairs is less than 24 hours from now. Despite repeated calls and requests for the estimate, I have not received a response. This lack of timeliness will cost me adversely. I am very disappointed.

I purchased new stand up refrigerator when I got it home and plugged it in it would not work. I called service the took two weeks to come check unit. Said control board was bad had to order new board. New board came in it took another 10 days for service to come out and install. Once installed the unit still would not work as it was discovered a second part was bad. Tech ordered new part this time it took 10 days for new part to arrive. Once part arrived it took another 7 days for service to come out. Service came out to install part. Once part second part once installed it was discovered the second part that was bad actually fried the first part that was installed 2 weeks before. Now Tech reorders the first part for the second time. Part comes in this time in 2 days. I call schedule repair this time I only have to wait 5 days except this time Tech does not even come! As I type this review I'm on hold with

trying to determine when they will show up!!!!!!!!

Nick asked for a two-hour window for service to begin. He was at our door ten minutes into the window. He charges per visit, not per hour, and took about 90 minutes to perform the job.
In a phone conversation prior to his visit, Nick provided my wife and me with his experience with several different brands. Our old dryer was creating a loud screeching noise, and he knew this brand was notorious for key parts wearing out prematurely. (Our dryer was nine years old.) He recommended several replacement brands for their durabiiity. Our online research after that conversation verified his remarks.
Another person might have been tempted to recommend a repair, knowing that it would be expensive and wouldn't extend the dryer's life that much. Nick simply gave us the benefit of his experience and left the decision up to us.

The person was clearly at a call center with lots of telephone communication going on in the background. They advertise as a local company and use the name of the town in their business name but are located thousands of miles away.

I called this company to repair our microwave. I sent him the model number and serial number of the unit along with the error code shown on the display. He gave me a price for the repair part and a service call to install it. I paid in advance for the part and the service call. When he arrived at our house, he worked for about an hour trying to figure out how to install the part. He finally gave up and said he had been sent the wrong part. After he left, I took the microwave apart and saw he had the correct replacement part, he just didn’t know where to put it. I went to his shop to get the part and installed it myself. I asked him to refund the cost of the service call since he didn’t know how to install the part. He refused saying he had to make the trip even though he couldn’t make the repair. I also asked for a discount on the part. Again, he refused saying he should be paid for the time he had spent to order it.
