"One day before my appointment, both of my thermostats suddenly died and I knew it had something to do with the electrical wiring because the batteries as a back" up turned on the thermostat. The problem was that the thermostat was not talking to the AC unit so my air went off completely. The timing was actually perfect because I had my appointment for the AC maintenance the next day.
R. (
) was my service provider and he could not have been any friendlier or more professional. He was super-punctual and listened as I explained what happened to my AC unit. He started looking at the furnace in the attic and knew immediately what the problem was. He took a picture of it for me on his phone so that I did not have to go into the sweltering attic. The switch on the furnace was cracked and the wires were no longer connected. He explained everything to me and then showed me the pricing to have this switch replaced. After he solved that problem, he proceeded to start the inspection and cleaning of the actual AC unit outside. He used a hose to clean the unit, took it apart and worked outside in the heat for about an hour and a half. After the diagnostic report, he told me that my capacitors were not looking too good and it would be a good idea to either have them replaced now or wait but they weren't in top condition. I asked him how much it would cost to also replace those and he gave me a quote. I decided to have those replaced and the switch because I just want everything to work and not worry about problems down the road.
installed the new capacitors and took my payment information and everything was great. My air is back on and cooling down the house and I am so happy with the service. I also have
's card and email in case I need to get a hold of him and he provided the best service I have experienced with Angie's List. Thank you,
, for all of you help and thank you,

-Katharine B.

"We came home after a trip to find a furnace fan that was on the verge of an electrical fire.
came out quickly and found the fan was in need" of replacement but the same issue caused a crack in the heat exchanger which can lead to CO issues. The were able to get someone out very quickly during a very hot time of the year to help talk about options and get us a quote for replacement.
the sales person was great. He was extremely knowledgable, gave great advise and was not pushy at all. We were very up-front about not wanting to purchase the same day but instead wanted to research a bit more before buying. This was no problem at all. We went with the recommended option and they were able to install the next day, on
3, before the long weekend!
and his install team were extremely professional and did fantastic work. They answered questions, showed off the details and did a great job cleaning up after their work. We would and have recommended
to friends and family!

Hiring an HVAC service

The awkward-to-pronounce acronym stands for "heating, ventilation and air conditioning" which in many respects are completely different processes.

HVAC Maintenance

You can help your heating and cooling systems work more efficiently and last longer by tending to regular maintenance. Some things, like changing the furnace filter, can easily be done by the homeowner.

Before you start a renovation project, ask yourself, "Do I need a permit for this?" In Chicago, the answer is probably yes.

what should you pay.  You pay what you can afford.  1100sqft unit requires a min. of a two ton unit.  prices range from 2100-2900 depending upon the seers of the system.  13 seer is the min. the law requires  and for your situation with 1100 sqft.  do not worry about the seers as long as it is to code.  the bigger the house the more seers for economy.  1100 sqft is at the border line for a two ton system.  It is more important to have your new system balance, there is where you get the economy on your electric bill and gas.  Bryant, lenox, ruud and carrier are the brands you should stay with. All have the same basic factory warrantee and will last you longer than you expect as long as you maintain it with regular check ups twice a year once in the spring and then in the fall.

The only thing of importance, is the hvac professional you choose to use. Alot of manufacturer's pieces are built relatively the same, and will last about the same amount of time. The thing that matters most is what you can not compare between companies, and that is the installation. Purchasing a system is not like purchasing a car, where no matter where you buy it, they are all the same. Each installation is different, and usually what you are paying for is the level of expertise, and quality of the installation, the company who will actual give you the warranty, and the comfort that you will receive. Manufacturers warranties disappear every day. They always have a loophole where they can get out of paying, but your local dealer wants to keep you happy for future work, and to protect his reputation in the communiy. Look up 4 year old Nordyne and Goodman warranty problems. Choose the HVAC professional first. It will cost you the least in the long run. I have had to totally redo plenty of installations that were just performed because of an uncomfortable customer, and a system that keeps breaking down. The equipment is only as good as it's installation, and over 70% are not installed correctly.
Yes Jupiter. It depends on the severity of the situation, is the mold encapsulated in the insulation. If yes, than replace [insulation] it with new. Is it on the casing of the heater? If yes, clean it with a mold neutralizing metal cleaner. It's not a matter of finding something or someone to clean or address the existing mold. It's a matter of finding a contractor to rectify what is causing the mold grow. It's coming from excessive moisture in the air-handler unit. I can say with 100% surety you’re dealing with poor airflow and/or incorrect equipment sizing! Either issue will cause excessive icing of the evaporator coil, which leads to excessive condensate water in the system. The condensate will eventually overflow the drain pan leaving stagnant water in the air-handler housing, which leads to mold growth. I would not let any contractor do any kind of temporary repair, add any device like a UV light or air-cleaning product until the aforementioned is corrected. I talk a lot about this in my videos and on my website. It is the result of improper system design from unqualified contractors. There is a reason why some guys cost more than others, and this is one reason why!

I'd rate them equal,or close,as with several other brands. I'd be more concerned about the difference in installation and service down the road. Difficult to determine the difference ,but asking for detailed info about their installation, may convince you to choose one over the other.

The Dept. of Energy states that poor installations can cause a 30% efficiency loss! Plus with Gas their are saftey issues, venting properly etc.,and of couse the need for a "low Level" Carbon Monoxide Alarm.
I think maybe you are confusing SEER, which is an efficiency-related rating (higher SEER means more effective use of the electric power used to compress the gas), and TONS rating, which is a measure of the total cooling power of the system. (Tons used to mean how many tons per hour of ice was used in evaporative cooling building systems - a Refrigeration or Cooling Ton equals 12,000 Btu/Hour of energy exchange. A BTU, which is another antique measure but still used, is the energy needed to change the temperature of a pound of water one degree fahrenheit. Unfortunately, because of varying humidity and evaporation, this is not readily related to house air heating or cooling without a lot of assumptions and some computations. Relating this to today's world - the Manuals BayAreaAc referred to account for all these energy conversions and determine an estimated cooling (or heating) requirement for your specific house. The type of construction, solar exposure, general climatic conditions such as average temperatures, humidity, and hottest and coldest normal ambient temperatures and desired inside temperture are all taken into account in the more sophisticated versions of the analysis, so there is no "standard", though a rough old rule of thumb was about 1 ton of cooling per 500SF of house. Obviously, this was a WAG only because it did not account for insulation, type of roofing, whether you live in Alaska or Miami, etc. The ACCA manuals do a very simplified form of evaluation to arrive at a "design", which generally will be adequate. OF course, highly precise calculations are not really needed because A/C units generally come in even ton ratings - so if you are at say 2.6 ton requirement you will be getting a 3-ton unit anyway. SEER ratings are not a direct measure of efficiency, but the relative difference between ratings gives you good idea of the unit's relative efficency in using electricity - so a 16 SEER should be about 19% more efficient (so roughly comparable lower electricity bill) than a comparably sized 13 SEER unit. 13 SEER is the lowest efficiency currently allowed to be built for general use, 19 SEER is about the highest efficiency made by pretty much all manufacturers, and about 25 SEER is the highest rated though very pricey shelf-item units, though special construction custom units can reach about 30 SEER. Note however, like any government sponsored rating, much of it is hooey when you get down to it - for instance, SEER ratings are figured based on 80 degree inside air temp and 82 degrees outside, when that is far from the normal case of mid to low seventies inside and high eighties or above outdoors. This makes the absolute SEER rating meaningless, but relative numbers still have meaning in comparing units. Note these efficiency ratings are for conventional air conditoners and heat pumps working in ambient air conditions. Ground sourced Geothermal or lake/river exchange cooling units, though initially more expensive in most cases, can greatly exceed the air-exchange unit efficiencies because they are exchanging heat with cold natural water rather than with a high-temperature outside air, and instead of continually compressing a gas are just circulating cold water. I worked on one geothermal cooling project which had almost infinite efficiency, which of course makes no sense - but the only power was for sensors and a control valve as the water flow was single-pass under gravity flow, so no power was used to circulate the water.
Just purchased a dual voltage capacitor at Home Depot for $8.34 and it literally takes 5 minutes to remove and replace. Make sure to shut the power (pull the fuse), short ALL connection points on the capacitor and do it yourself. If anyone tries to charge you more than $150 total (for labor and parts) please chase them off your property.

Nick from
Blue Springs HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
and Cooling contacted us in advance to make appointment and then again to confirm the appointment. He arrived with his co-worker right on time. They both made a very professional appearance, neat and in company shirts. They got right to work, checking the furnace and pointing out any potential problems. Then they inspected the AC unit, again diagnosing any potential problems and cleaning the unit, and then advising us on what our next steps should be since we currently do not use our central air. He offered to return to further advise is we needed, and gave us prices on several options to improve our a/c.
- Joe L.

There was a deal that I used on Angies List. It was pretty straightforward, buy the deal and then schedule an appointment. The tonly ch arrived and he diagnosed the problem pretty quickly. I was satisfied with his repair. I don't think there was anything else that needed fixing.

This was a Professional Job. Care was taken to check out all functions of the heater (gas pressures, vent temperatures, motor operations, and electrical continuity. The technician walked me through each step of the multi-step process, explaining the reason for the check and the expected results. He removed all carbon from the igniter, tightened all the motor mounts, checked for carbon dioxide leaks, cleaned the gas heads and chambers. I was indeed impressed.

did an excellent job on the doors. He made several adjustments to the double pocket doors and replaced the hardware. He had to remove the finish molding top and side to lift out the single pocket door. He replaced the hardware on the single pocket door and reinstalled the finish molding top and side. He swept the floor when he was finished. We were very happy with the work that

Central Air quit working, I went through Angie's List to look at reviews
They had a deal on Angie's list for a diagnosis service for just $39.
based on their Positive reviews we went with them. They were here the
very next day. At first the Tech thought it might be the compressor,
however he was getting sporadic readings. He was able to determine that
we had a bad breaker that needed replaced. He agreed to come back after
we had that fixed at no extra charge to completely diagnose our system.
We got it done, He came back and didn't try to sell us anything. It was
good to work with a company who cares about their customers.
- Pat W.

We have used ARS for 10 years now. In the last 4 years their service and punctuality has declined. Each year we have renewed the maintenance service on our HVAC systems and had them serviced every 6-7 months under this agreement. In 2012 all 3 of our (10 year old) systems were failing and we purchased 2 new ones through ARS. Their price was fairly high. The third system we went with a different company who offered a better competitive price. Why I am writing this review is due to my frustration with the company. Two reason; 1. They have my husband's cell phone number and mine. They have been told multiple times not to call my husband's number, he cannot always answer his phone at work. 2. Last night, one of our systems stopped cooling. We called the after hours number to schedule a service call for today. The person who was taking the call pressed my husband to renew our service maintenance contract, which he did. The technician was scheduled to come out between 12-4. He called my husband's cell number, which he could not answer. By the time my husband was able to call back the technician had moved on to another job. He didn't bother to call my number. 4pm passed, we get to 5:40 pm, still no ARS tech. I had called the office and they couldn't give me a time when he would be out. At this point, which is the dinner hour and now a real inconvenience, I had to reschedule for the following day and plan on waiting possible another 4 hours or more to get the service done. The whole problem with this situation is, with the new HVAC systems when they are purchased through certain companies, for example Amana which offer a 10 year warranty, you are stuck with having to use the company that installed them. The warranties are not transferrable to allow other companies to work on them. If this was not the case, I would have switched companies to take care of my 3 systems a long time ago. ARS is getting too big, they used to great 10 years ago. They also can't keep the same technicians for very long periods. This is a concern.
