Car Transport reviews in Lake Park
It's so nice to have my car and my stuff intact and ready half-way across the country!
I initially contacted the company several months before I’d planned on shipping to get a quote. Then, once I was ready to ship it
to my parents’ house, I started the process 6 weeks before I’d planned on having the vehicle arrive at its destination.
I had planned it that way as it’s a classic that’s been in the family for years, and we’d all planned on doing some work on it over the holiday for some family time. It's a sentimental family classic car. I live several hundred miles away from my parents, so it was crucial that it arrive sometime during that week.
This company does business as Alaska Car Transport out of Anchorage, but they’re located in New
Yet, every time I called, they were confused about where the car was. And this despite the fact that they were the ones to have had it towed from the mechanic’s to the port of Anchorage. At first the brokers (
put on a ship, but after many phone calls and questions, I finally realized that (since they have no offices or any physical presence in Anchorage at all), they were either referring to the actual port, or possibly the tow truck yard or Horizon Trucking (a Vendor of Roadrunners) yard. At one point, though the vehicle had been picked up on 12th of June, the Roadrunners agents kept stating
things like “well you dropped off your car on Friday (meaning the 13th) or “you dropped off your car on Monday (the 16th). The car had initially been slated to be put on the ship on the 13th, and I’d called several times leading up to that time, only to finally get in touch with someone who had several different stories as to why it hadn’t been put on the ship on that day.
First was that the driver hadn’t made it to the port on time because he had to pick up other cars. When I pointed out it had been
picked up the previous day, the story changed to they had trouble with the
One of the few times they actually called me was to tell me the car wouldn’t ship on the 13th, but the following Monday the 16th. What they actually did was not put it on a ship until the 17th. Then they told me that as soon as it was off the ship in Tacoma, they’d call me to let me know, and would put it on ground transport as soon as it was off the ship and checked out. They never called
to let me know when it docked. I'd kept track of the shipping
changed their story to not “as soon as it’s off the ship it will be transported” to “well, we have to wait until we have transportation in the area”. I called and called and they kept claiming they were “waiting for transportation. It sat in Tacoma for almost 2 weeks before the last time I called; they claimed it was going on a truck on the 11th of
At this point, I still have no idea where it is. The company simply doesn’t care. If this was this big of a hassle, they should have made it VERY clear how catch as catch can this process was, they shouldn’t have misled me by saying the car would be there the week I’d scheduled it to be arriving.
The frustration level from their extremely poor communication and misleading promises is the worst part. If only they’d been HONEST about their abilities and had communicated clearly and reliably, the lateness of the car wouldn’t be nearly such an issue. I hope to save anyone else from having to go through this.
I got quotes from several firms, which ranged from $695 to $1295.
They were the only company who was willing to answer my questions about how certain they were a driver would be lined up (and gave reasons-- like a sedan being desirable to drivers (lighter, easier to load, smaller to add onto a close-to-full car trailer). They were the only ones who didn't quote me a higher price for having only a 2 day window for pickup, and who guaranteed my price wouldn't go up. She knew the
In short, I feel like we got a very good value on our car shipment, from a company that knew the
ABOUT CAR SHIPPING:
It's important to understand that car shipment companies are mainly brokers, serving as the logistical go-betweens to line up drivers and small trucking companies to transport your car, and not the trucking company itself. Their service is putting your shipment needs out to bid, vetting the truckers (it's mostly solo or small trucking companies that do this work), and serving as the liaisson if anything goes wrong. Most require a deposit (as their fee), and remaining amount of quote is paid directly to driver upon delivery as their cut (typically required to be cash or cashier's check, FYI).
Research told me there are many dubious firms out there, that may not screen truckers carefully, or will quote you a low price to lock in your business but it means your contract is put out to bid at a lowball price, which may not "get picked up" by any drivers (or any drivers you'd actually want), and price gets raised significantly last minute "to get a driver". Lots of horror stories. So I asked a lot of questions.
For example, one of the other companies I talked to (don't worry, I'm rating them on Angie's too) emailed a quote with "$50 discount included !", and only further down it mentioned "be sure to claim your discount". When I asked what they meant by "claim my discount", it turns out that to actually get the price I was quoted, I would have to go online and leave reviews on a couple websites afterwards (which I read in customer reviews requires providing personal info to create accounts, and then firm touts all their "positive reviews" in their advertising). Otherwise, my price would end up being $50 higher. Very misleading not to tell you what's required for the discount you've already been given right on the quote. Also, their quote was for a pickup window of over 2 weeks long, when I had indicated only a 2 day window (so they changed to a much higher price for that when I asked). They couldn't (i.e. wouldn't) give me any odds or even a general idea of how likely it typically was that contract like mine would be picked up at the low price they quoted me, and wouldn't guarantee that was the price I'd end up being charged. And they seemed miffed I knew enough about how it worked to ask questions like that.
