Worst Minneapolis-St. Paul Contractors of 2009

Angie’s List members report College Muscle Movers LLC continued business in 2009 despite having its household goods mover license revoked by the state in December 2008 for failure to update its insurance and vehicle registrations.

The company also landed in the Angie’s List Penalty Box twice in less than a year after members complained of damaged property, failure to show and billing issues.

“Don’t hire them because it will be the worst decision you ever make!” says Kristin Garcia of Medicine Lake.

She hired the company in February to move items from St. Paul to Minneapolis and says they damaged furniture and never responded to requests for reimbursement.

“The worst part is shortly after the move, someone tried to fraudulently use my credit card,” Garcia says. “Coincidence? If I could give them zero stars, I would.”

The BBB gives College Muscle Movers a flunking grade, and there are civil judgments against the company in Ramsey County. Calls to company owner Jerad Poling were not returned.

Structure Additions & Remodeling Inc. | Oak Grove, Minn.

“This guy is a pathological liar,” Angie’s List member Pushpa Leadholm says of Jeff Nordling, owner of Structure Additions & Remodeling.

She says she paid him $145,000 in October 2008 to build a second story addition on her home, but claims the work was poor, not completed on time and subcontractors complained about not being paid.

“I see no sign of my lovely house being completed.”

The state revoked Nordling’s building contractor’s license in May, issuing him a cease and desist order from acting as a residential contractor, roofer or remodeler anywhere in the state. Structure Additions & Remodeling Inc. has several civil judgments against them.

“Guys like this will lie to your face in order to get your money,” says Department of Labor and Industry enforcement services manager Charlie Durenberger.

Angie’s List member Meadow Schroeder agrees. She gave Nordling $231,000 to remodel her home’s interior and add a second story, but she says the subcontractors claimed not to have been paid.

“Bottom line, he lies and lies and lies straight to the face of anyone,” she says.

Advanced Plumbing Services | Plymouth

News reports indicate Rodd Hansen, owner of Advanced Plumbing Services, continued to work as an unlicensed plumber in Minnesota in spring 2009 despite a number of consumer complaints filed with the state’s Department of Labor and Industry and the BBB.

“He screwed over so many people,” says Claudia Lunning of Spring Park. “I should’ve known better than to hire him.”

Hansen, who was living in one of Lunning’s rental units at the time, agreed to install a new central air conditioning unit, she says. However, when the unit was delivered, it was the wrong size and Hansen was nowhere to be found.

“I’m stuck with $950 worth of central air conditioning,” says Lunning, who won a $17,000 civil judgment against Hansen for damages and unpaid rent but still hasn’t been paid.

There are other civil judgments against Hansen, including a $9,800 fine issued by the state in July 2008 for working without a license and bond.

Charlie Durenberger, DLI’s enforcement services manager, says they’ve received complaints of Hansen destroying unnecessary parts of a home after he’s hired for a job.

“This guy is a menace,” Durenberger says. Calls to Hansen were not returned.
