The Chimney wash needed replacement. Three bricks needed to be replaced. The chimney bricks needed tug pointing.
The chimney's estimate was good. The quoted price for new chimney wash (cement top) was in the middle of other estimates. Price for tub pointing and replacing three bricks as lower than others. So overall price was fine.
The quality of the work was not good at all.
The old loose cement and parts should have been removed from the old wash before pouring the new wash/top. This company just poured cement over the top of the loose pieces. I would have ignored this if they had done a good job with the tug pointing.
The quality of work on the bricks around the chimney shocked me. This company did cosmetic work of hiding mortar issues and made my problem worse.
My expectation and initial discussion with them was to use diamond point grinder to remove the bad mortar before pushing in new cement.
Water drips into the fireplace now. Water never dripped into the fireplace before. And winter is starting in Michigan.
The worst part is that their language now includes 4 letter words during phone conversations.
The handle connecting to the cable which pulls my chimney flap shut had to be removed for repair of the upper chimney. After the repair person replaced the handle onto the cable, it came loose after I tried it a few times. I feel this resulted from a poorly designed handle. I was able to fix it myself, so I didn’t have to call back the repair man. Had I called him, I’m confident he would have quickly come back for free to fix it and (unnecessarily) profusely apologized. As you can tell, I like these guys.
