Business Description: Hi guys ! Sometimes you need a certified licensed contractor, sometimes you just need a really skilled carpenter. I am the really skilled carpenter. We’ll get into the license info in a minute. First I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself. As you can see there are a lot of things I’ve become really good at over the years. I started construction after graduation in 2001. I’ve been building since. Of course the economy was a bit better then, but that doesn’t bother me. I’ve done well despite what people say about construction in Michigan. My primary bread and butter is framing, typically new homes & light commercial. Of course there is usually a small amount of framing required on every remodel or addition. So breathe easy, I could frame your entire house. The little bit of framing involved on a deck or addition is a piece of cake in my eyes. Moving on to the other goodies. Did you know that carpentry is classified as Division 6, which includes plastics as well? It’s no wonder I’ve put in hundreds of vinyl windows & doors. So yes, I install windows & doors. You could point to a blank spot on your wall and say, “I want a window there.” Q: So you do decks? A: Yes ! I’ve done a lot of decks. I’ve got so many deck ideas I could give you ideas and plans all day long. In fact, I’ve done just that with quite a few people. One of my favorite things to do with the homeowner is grab a couple lawn chairs and sit down at the rear of your yard and shoot ideas back and forth on what would be the best deck ever. Q: Do you need to be licensed to do that? A: 99% of the time yes. Michigan is really strict on their laws about building without licenses. That is why I put a lot of emphasis on referrals to contractors. Of the 8 or so contractors I work with there are 4 licensed contractors that I’ve done a lot of projects with. I will usually recommend one of these guys. They will do the contract, finances, permits, etc. with you. FAQ: Why aren’t you licensed Matt? A: I was going to get licensed then I went out to Chicago to frame condos. When I came back the state had already changed the laws and now I need to come up with the money to pay for the classes on top of the regular exam & application fees. I’ll be licensed by next year I imagine. I have so much more information I could give you but we’ll save it for later. Good luck!
