"This will not be a bashing of a business just the facts about services and reliability. We hired
to remove and install tiles in our kitchen." We were given a start date of Monday February 23, 2015. Since we had not heard from
my husband called
on Sunday night to find out what time he would be starting. He said he could not start on Monday he was still working on another job. Again we did not hear from
so on Monday night my husband called him to see what time he would be starting on Tuesday. He again told us that he could not start on Tuesday. At this point we were wondering if he was reliable. My husband took the week off of work for this to be done and two days have now passed and no work has begun. Tuesday night we called him again to see if we were on for Wednesday and he finally said yes. He would be at our home between 8am and 8:30am. Wednesday time went by and at 9am he finally showed up to begin work. He came alone; we were told he would be working with a crew since our kitchen is approximately 360 square feet. When we asked where his help was he said his partner’s girlfriend died and would not be in today. He worked alone and my husband felt bad so he began to help him. He then said he forgot garbage cans for the tile and left for an hour to get them. He worked until 4pm and when he left the entire kitchen was still a mess. There were broken tiles all around garbage cans in the house filled with tiles. My husband worked after he left to try to clean up some of the mess. Thursday no show, my husband called him and he said his truck broke down. We told him he had to get here our house is in total disarray. Finally he arrived at 11am and worked until 3pm and said he had to go get his truck. He left leaving all the garbage still in the house. My husband was so tired of seeing the garbage he and my son took all of the garbage out to the front of our home. Friday again no show, my husband called again since
never seems to call if he is going to be late or not showing up at all. He said his truck broke down again. At this point we were so upset we really didn’t know what to do. Finally at 1:40pm he arrived to find my husband removed almost all the wooden sub-floor that was half removed when
left the day before. He worked until 3pm and left saying he would be back at 9am Saturday. Saturday, he actually arrived on time. He came to install the new sub-floor which he quoted as backer board. He came in with this orange rolled up underlayment for tile called
Ditra. We never heard of this and he said it is better. He worked until 12pm and then he said he was leaving. My husband asked him to start to tile and he said he couldn’t and he could not work on Sunday. We asked him to remove the trash outside which was part of his service. He said he
’t have his truck so he could not take trash. My husband and son removed all the trash, except for the garbage cans with tiles. Sunday we made a decision to cut our losses, we already paid him ½ of the quoted price but we just could not continue on with someone so unreliable. We now will have to live with a home in disarray until we can find someone to install the tiles. I hope the above FACTS will help you make an educated decision on hiring or not hiring Douohue Tile & Marble.

"We contacted CIHF because we were planning on replacing our carpet to get our home ready to sell.
kept our budget in mind when she brought" carpet samples to our home and provided wonderful advice while we contemplated our options. We never felt pressured to make a decision which was really nice as well.
and the rest of the team were very attentive and responsive leading up to the install and post install. The installation team was great as well. They were careful with our furniture and they did a great job removing the old carpet and installing our new carpet. They were very detailed while installing the carpet on our open staircase as well. They took their time cleaning up after the installation as well so there were no staples or fibers left behind when they left. The last thing I will say is that we received a thank you note from
about two weeks after our installation thanking us for our business and wishing us luck while our home is on the
. You don't often see business done that way anymore and it was a nice surprise. We have already recommended them to friends and family and we will definitely use them in the future.

Wood floor alternatives

Consumers have many choices beyond traditional hardwood floors, including wood laminate and renewable sources such as bamboo, cork and even leather. Some alternatives look virtually the same as hardwoods.

From the wall street journal online:

"Etiquette and tipping experts agree that tipping a contractor and his employees isn't expected because contractors offer to do a job for you at a specific price. Any extra money they would want would be built into their bid. Also, it's a business relationship rather than one where they are performing a personal service for you like a waiter or a maid. But if the employees do extra jobs around the house, then experts say it is appropriate to tip a cash amount equivalent to the task; "tip gifts" such as cookies and drinks can count. "The key to tipping is whether or not it was outside the scope of what was normally expected," says Mark Brenner, author of "Tipping for Success!"

My opinion is that a little bit of courtesy (snacks, drinks, expression of appreciation etc.) goes a long way and upon completion of their work you feel compelled by a job well done to offer a little extra in the form of a tip - go for it, but do not feel obligated.
?
Agreed.  If you have existing cracking in porcelain you need to know the cause first.  I don't know of any reputable contractor that would dare install tile over existing tile.  Also, any manufacturer warranties for defects would be null due to improper installation.  Did the contractor offer this solution or did you ask for it?  The mear fact that he is agreeing to or offering it tells me you need to leave this guy for someone who knows what they are talking about before he does only half the job which will have to be redone in the near future, costing you more in the long run.

I get so many calls from customers that were talked into a "cheaper" way to do something only to find the work very sub-par.  The sad part is they are out the money they spent in the first place along with the additional amount I have to charge just to undo what the first contractor did before I can do it right.  This floor could end up costing you double what it should if it's not done right.

I purchased this as a big deal. Grant promptly got in touch, set an appointment and showed up on time. He carefully measured the space, gave me recommendations, and prepared an estimate for the entire job, to

tile for a 210 square foot kitchen. He explained where to get the tile, and the type of tile, and suggested that he possibly could get me a better price once I priced the tile. Immediately after I priced the tile, I emailed him about the tile, and he quickly emailed back, helping me with a final decision about the tile. He picked up the tile for me and two weeks later, he began the work which took two days. He and his assistant

were terrific. They arrived timely, worked diligently, and carefully and professionally installed cement backing, tile, and grout. The floor looks wonderful.

Unfortunately, the installation crew used by the store was extremely sloppy and unprofessional. They did not use any plastic covering to protect our counters, appliances, etc. They cut the tile in the house instead of the garage so our home was covered in a sheet of thick dust. We have similar work in other homes before without this result. They left food and trash all over our home and actually drank all the water bottles we had in our refrigerator. The grouting was extremely sloppy and we have to touch up multiple areas on the walls where the grout was erroneously placed. In addition, the caulking job is extremely sloppy with multiple areas of caulk on the floor where grout should be. The caulk is white and the grout is dark brown so it is quite noticeable. I called to have this remedied and the installation manager said he would take care of it, but they already had full payment, so of course, this has still not been fixed.

I wanted them to succeed. The workers and team leader were usually pleasant and friendly. The office salesperson was very helpful. My biggest concern is that they performed little quality control and assurance of their own work that I could see. They relied on me to bring up issues like loose tiles, misaligned tiles, missing thinset (hollow sounding tiles), missing grout, thinset showing through the grout, and tiles more than one credit card thickness from being flat (the latter of which they would not fix, saying it was not part of this type installation). This made me quite nervous during the installation and is the reason I rate their professionalism low. In my first and only major do-it-yourself tile job I did 12 years ago these are things I would have checked and doubled-checked even as a first-time amateur.
The installation near the fireplace was initially very ragged and was eventually fixed to the original plan; in fact, in this case the finished product was good, however, the initial attempt was far from professional and not in accordance with the team leader's direction---leading to questions about their capabilities.. When I ask the tile installer why they didn't backbutter the tiles to get a flatter installation, he asked "what is that?" Then when I told him what backbuttering was he said that would take too long. He did not do minimum to check the flatness of the installation, like laying a board over the tiles--nor did his supereviosr check.... The good: the grout lines are good., the moulding replacement was well done, initially.
However, when I called to discuss a .5 inch offset where the tile meets a carpeted area though; they acted surprised and questioned whether this was really true--- I double-checked it was off by .5 inch--leaving an uneven look that a professional would not do. It made me think: what standard do they have and what things may I have missed? Unfortunately, the replacement tile was set with more than 2 credit cards thickness of lippage and had to be replaced a third time.
After much discussion with the owner and several visits about large areas with lippage and adhesion problems, he did replace the entire job with a new installation. However, there is still more lippage on this job than many others I have seen and more adhesion problems. His team returned after I complained to fix about a half dozen loose tiles on the 2nd installation. Also, this was an emotional hardship on my family as the work and rework took many weeks. My sister-in-law had a similar size job completed recently in her home by another contractor and did not have any of these issues.
Update: I waited several months to submit this to see how the job held up. Just as I feared, some sections of hollow tile have become more hollow sounding--they actually rattle when you walk on them with your bare feet. Also, I have found other areas--damaged walls (small holes), carpet not attached in threshold, and broken moulding where they repaired their mistakes. I don't understand why this company has had such a hard time meeting basic industry standards of flatness and adhesion--even on second and third tries. While the owner has explanations of why certain procedures were not used--like back buttering--he still had an obligation to meet industry standards for lippage and adhesion. He failed to do that in a way I would say was acceptable. I would steer clear of them. I am still very dissatisfied with their work.

We hired

oak flooring in our master bedroom that had been covered with a hideous carpet. We had to reschedule a couple of times and the company was very forgiving and worked with our schedule. They showed up on time, and did an amazing job! The wood we purchased was top quality and that is what was installed. we've heard horror stories from folks who used other providers and did not get the same quality of wood they thought they purchased. The other thing we were very impressed with was during our initial

Company was excellent to deal with. I was under some time pressure and they were able to jump on the project immediately. Additionally, my intent was to replace kitchen , foyer and bathrooms w linoleum. The company was able to give us a great price on some discounted inventory and so we tiled. Would absolutely recommend this company.

It took 3 days to dry my home which I thought was pretty quick, the repairs were excellent, but they took a few days longer then I was told which was not that big of a deal because it was only a few days and I know they were busy but compared to the other restoration companies, things happened quickly.
