Sealing granite countertops is a DIY project even a novice DIYer can handle. Follow these step-by-step instructions (with pictures) to protect your countertops.
Contractors say homeowners with this trait are the most satisfied with home improvement projects.
Want to update your bathroom without leaving it outdated in a decade? Consider these bathroom remodel ideas for counters, colors and style that transcend time.
Artificial (quartz) is cheaper, more uniform, has fewer voids to collect dirt, and is almost as abrasion and chip resistant.
Granite is more expensive, stains and collects dirt a little easier as a rule, and is slighly more chip resistant as a rule.
For durability, I would not rate one over the other - barring a 250 lb guy hopping up on it and cracking it, either is likely to outlive you. Selection is typically based on appearance - quartz tends to be more uniform looking and does not always do a good job of simulating the veining and variations that natural stone has.
Now some of the man made stone counters rival the real granite and othe stones without the maintainence of stone. There are many of them out there and it is more a choice of looks than anything else. Corian is still a strong choice of tops today and one advantage is it can be repaired when scratched on site. If you don't mind the maintainence you can't beat the looks of real stone though unless you need a few pieces to make up the top as the graining may be hard to match up. I am impressed though at how realistic some of the man made products have become. It is more an issue of what brand are available in your area. Most all are made the same way with crushed stone and basically an epoxy binder used to make the sheets.

when they brought it back in and set it in place it fit perfectly. The sink would not fit in the pre cut opening so they trimmed it down to size. I was in the next room and I saw a cloud of granite dust coming out of the kitchen it was so thick that i had to cover my mouth and nose with my shirt and my eyes felt gritty, The Kitchen, Living room, Hallway and Office was covered in granite dust. I had to use eye wash to get the grit out of my eyes. I was told that the workers were experienced in installing and cleaning up. I was also told that they would hang a tarp or plastic sheeting to keep any mess in the kitchen,They did not. I called the company about the granite dust and they said they would send the 2 workers back to clean up, I was told that they clean up granite dust all the time and that they would do a good job at it and not to let them go until the job was done to my satisfaction. Only one of the two worker showed up and he had paper towels and a bottle of spray cleaner and he cleaned for two hours in the kitchen. I looked at the
kitchen it was after dark by then and the kitchen looked cleaner but not clean.I told him he could go because he obviously did not know what he was doing, So the next day I went out to the kitchen to clean , We just had our cabinets refaced the week before I looked over at the Microwave and the surface was all scuffed up. Granite dust is an abrasive material and he had etched the surface when he was wiping it off. Luckily the cabinets were not damaged. The ceiling fan was running so the question remains. Granite Dust Is an Abrasive , did it get into the motor of the ceiling fan, Refrigerator, T.V. VCR. Wii,Playsation3, Computer,.....etc. I guess time will tell.
After a few days, I noticed some pockets that had not been filled, but had been told that this happens sometimes and to let them know and they would come back and fix them. The second time around, communication was much harder, not as quick and prompt. However we did finally get a date scheduled for the installer to come back and fill the holes. Again, we were given the 8-9 am window and he showed up an hour and a half late. This time we did get a phone call at about 9:45 telling us he was running late and on his way.
Overall, I was very happy with the process, just a few frustrating waiting periods. The counter was cut beautifully and they did a nice job installing it on our existing counter without damaging it or the walls. I would definitely consider using them again in the future.
installation was also perfect. I would hire them again and I highly recommend them.
