You have a lot of questions. I will try to cover them all.
First, mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime.
Second, unlike rats, mice are very small; it would take a major infestation to generate a persistent odor as indicated.
Elimination starts by sealing the exterior foundation of the home, door sweeps, broken windows, cracks in the foundation, holes around electrical service, water faucets and dryer vents.
Secondly, food sources must be eliminated. Mice only need 1 gram of food a day and they extract water directly from the food they digest.
Next, mice infestations are more localized than people think, bait under the house might not have any effect. Heat sources like refrigerators and hot water heaters are suspect as a base of operation.
Snap traps are highly effective when used where dropping are found. Use a variety of bait, peanut butter (avoid this if children are present), brownie, fruit and even dental floss tied to the pedal (nesting material).
As for the odor, look for an enzyme based cleaner / deodorizer.
If the problem continues seek the help of a Pest Control Professional with rodent experience.

Another problem occurs if service hasn't been performed on the inside of he house in awhile and is due. I'll suggest they move the date out a week when they and I are both available so service can be performed both inside and out at the same time. They usually try to convince me otherwise and I am usually pressed to defend my position on this issue, too. This does get rather annoying after awhile.
Most recently service was performed at my house on a day when it was looking like rain was imminent. I didn't expect we'd have rain that early in the day, otherwise I would have postponed. I said up front before they started that if they are interrupted by rain then they will have to come back out to repeat the exterior application. They said okay to that. It began raining while they were still working around the house, and not all treated areas were even dry when the rain started. So as stated prior to treatment, I said they'll have to come back to which they said okay - their only exception is that I'd have to wait two weeks. I agreed to that. The following day I called to set up the service and as usual I ran into the typical problem with management.
I've never had a service arrangement with any provider on Angie's List where I've had poor personal interactions with management. It seems AZ Pest is more interested in money and less interested in service. Management wanted to charge me a second time for redoing the service that was interrupted by rain - even though the service tech was advised prior to starting work and agreed to two weeks later after it rained. Based on this experience and one other at the beginning or our service relationship, I get the impression that their mode of operation is to get you to agree to a "redo" IF you see a problem develop after the service, then to charge you again for that redo. I've really not enjoyed the service relationship with AZ Pest control. I've considered canceling with them many times but was hoping for a better experience. Unfortunately it never improved. I would not recommend them based on my experience with management - and I've asked them to cancel our service agreement.
The tech came out today and I asked him why I did not get my service last month. He told me that the owner took me off his route because I paid $35.00 instead of $40.00. Really?? He did this without calling me and talking to me about the discrepancy of the fee. This is how you treat a customer that has been with your company since 1998? If he had called me to talk to me about the discrepancy of the fee, I would have said no problem and paid up what I owed on the next visit. I had to get the $35.00 fee from somewhere. I just did not pay $35.00 because I felt like it (the tech told me the fee but denied it when I confronted him.
I told the tech that I thought it was really terrible that the owner would treat a customer like this and he told me that is probably how the owner feels about me. Really? This is what you say to a customer? He told me that the owner told him that the customers don't dictate the fees the company charges. Really? This is how you treat a customer? No contact with the customer, just discontinue the service without speaking to them?
THIS COMPANY IS HORRIBLE WITH CUSTOMER RELATIONS!

I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER. I don't HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE ANTS ANYMORE AND I AM SO PLEASED THEY CAME TO MY HOUSE SO FAST. I WILL ALWAYS USE SOLE'S FOR ANY FUTURE PEST PROBLEMS.
