The quickest and most effective method of pest control? It's not at the hardware store. How much does it cost to hire an exterminator to eliminate pests?

You have a lot of questions. I will try to cover them all.

First, mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime.
Second, unlike rats, mice are very small; it would take a major infestation to generate a persistent odor as indicated.

Elimination starts by sealing the exterior foundation of the home, door sweeps, broken windows, cracks in the foundation, holes around electrical service, water faucets and dryer vents.

Secondly, food sources must be eliminated. Mice only need 1 gram of food a day and they extract water directly from the food they digest.

Next, mice infestations are more localized than people think, bait under the house might not have any effect. Heat sources like refrigerators and hot water heaters are suspect as a base of operation.

Snap traps are highly effective when used where dropping are found. Use a variety of bait, peanut butter (avoid this if children are present), brownie, fruit and even dental floss tied to the pedal (nesting material).

As for the odor, look for an enzyme based cleaner / deodorizer.

If the problem continues seek the help of a Pest Control Professional with rodent experience.

Hope that helps,

Andrew Deluca

The quickest way I've found to get rid of them (as opposed to preventing them - see answer above) is to put a half cup of cider vinegar (must be cider vinegar) in a jar or bowl and put a half-dozen drops of dishwashing liquid on top of it.  Leave out on a counter wherever the problem exists. Empty and refill as needed.

Legally, it needs to be pest control - wildly boring technical explanation regarding Federal pesticide laws that I won't bother you with.  Having said that, depending on where they are located in your chimnet, you could do it yourselt.  Most wasp control products will shoot 12'-20'.  So, if they are in a lower section of your chimney you wait until dark (they return to their nests before dark) and reach up above your damper and spray the nests.  If you're not averse to being on your roof, do the same thing from the top.  Otherwise, hire a professional.

An exterminator - you have to careful that the pests are driven out of the attic BEFORE the entrance they were using is closed up, otherwise you have dead decaying animals in your attic - can cause a stench that lasts for weeks.

great, fabulous, and fantastic ... i requested no inside extermination as I have pets and allergies, they respected my wishes, went through the exterior with both liquid and granules. Advised due to the amount of ants, feel free to contact them again and they would warrant for 60 days. They called to follow up with the services. The young man was wonderful as he tolerated my overly friendly dog. i am thrilled I found this company on Angie's List and will use them again. Thank you, you guys are appreciated.

I purchased the $175 Rodent Elimination Package on 10/13/14. The first day he could come out was 10/25/14. Since this is a mice issue, I wanted this taken care of quickly, but I kept the 10/25 date. I did tell him I was going to check to see if another vendor could come out sooner. When I couldn't find anyone else, he told me he would keep the 10/25 date open. Today I received an email that he now cannot come out until 10/27. I wrote back saying I could not wait that long. He replied that it was a scheduling error on his part and apologized. He was very courteous; perhaps a little overwhelmed this time of year. I would like a refund of $175 as I will not be using his services.

We started service last year when moving into a newly constructed home. We had a lot of bugs (ants, spiders, etc) in/out. Within 3 months the bugs were at bay. We have a Taexx system so they inject the insecticide into the system and it works throughout the house. They also sweep around the outside of the house (with a brush) to keep spider webs under control. We have had ongoing service since then. The cost is rather expensive but the results are so effective!
Pros: Effective insect control, Responsive, technician always friendly.
Cons: Payment online REALLY difficult initially - better now. Scheduling service - they always call and want to schedule service 2 weeks before it's due (because they're in the area). Price.

I was still worried about termites after an earlier treatment by a different provider. I wanted a second opinion by someone not affiliated with the original provider.
The office staff was helpful and courteous. My initial appointment was cancelled because of rain. The inspector arrived promptly on the make-up day and thoroughly examined the wood around my house--including crawling under a room that had no basement. He gave me hints for all kinds of pest prevention and told me how to proceed with my original service.
This was an Angie's special deal--only $45--for a service worth much, much more. These are definitely the people I would call in the future for any new pest problems.

I only got one estimate for this work. I chose Proven because of rating on Angie's list and the estimate was in line with an estimate I got when I bought the house 5 years ago. I also chose Proven because they used a real termiticide, not the orange stuff that a lot of companies use.
I did not have to leave the premises or remove my pets to have the work performed. There was a hint of odor after the job was done but mostly it smelled like wet earth after a light rain.
I didn't realize the extent of the work they were to do so some areas at the outside walls were not cleared properly of materials. The Proven crew helped me clear those areas so they could do that work. The contract said that there would be a charge for clearing areas not cleared when they got there, but they did not charge me for helping with the clearing up. They did not hurt any of the plantings at the house walls but still treated those areas.
Overall, I was pleased with the work and the crew and the finished job.
I would recommend them to others.I would use them again and
