"We're working with
on several projects - this was the first, and I feel it warrants its own review, since the company has different" departments/teams to handle different types of projects. (We worked with the tree team for this part of the project, and we are working with the landscaping team on adding some new plantings along the parkway.) Having tree and landscaping work done is no small project. (But what is?!) :-) There were several steps to get this work complete, and the
team was great during the whole process. Estimate:: First, we had a guy out who walked through the property with my husband to determine what they (
) would recommend for our VERY OVERGROWN yard and trees. This was free and painless. We received a quote via email from
that explained in detail what work was planned for the quoted amount. The amount quoted (around 1750) seemed reasonable for the quantity and quality of work we were expecting, (the latter based on reviews). Scheduling:: Once we agreed on the quote, they worked with us to find a day that fit with our schedule (we wanted to be here while it was being done). We found a date a few weeks out. The Work:: Day 1 We didn't know the work would require two days - one for trimming and cutting, and one for stump removal. But that was no big deal. It was really the trimming we were most interested in being here for. They were scheduled to arrive at 7am, and they were here right on time. They wasted no time, and went to work on the biggest tree first. This is an extremely large fiddle leaf fern that's probably grown unchecked for several decades. It was probably about 25-30 feet tall, very full of living and dead branches of all sizes, and it was slowly killing/overcrowding a dragon tree growing right next to it. It had been creaking a lot in the wind this summer, and we were starting to worry it was going to
a limb and cause damage. Now it looks, well, kind of sad. But I understand that's pretty typical homeowner appraisal of a trimmed tree's appearance after a badly needed tree trimming. Now it's about 18-20 ft high and extremely thin. But no more dead branches, and we fully expect it to grow back in majestically. I tried to brace myself for the fern tree's thinness. But my husband was not braced for the thinning of the large juniper on the corner of our property. That one was, according to the quote, supposed to receive "light trimming and lacing," where the rest of the trees had no "light" qualification to the level of trimming. Now ls quite bare and see-through at a corner of the house we'd hoped to have more privacy. But what can you do? It was probably just not relayed well to the team doing the work. In the end, it will grow back, and probably better for it. On the other hand, the team was incredibly hard-working and flexible, letting us wait to decide until the day of the work about whether or not we wanted stump removal, and also fitting removing a 15-ft palm tree into the schedule, at a very reasonable cost. (Just $200 more for removing the tree and stump.) I honestly cannot believe how hard these guys worked. I was so thankful to have such a big team (5-6 guys?) working at once, since it was a big and very loud job. (The stumps were all removed on a separate day by two other gentlemen.) It was a hot day, but they worked through it and got the job done by early afternoon. Overall, we feel great about the work. Being new to home-owning, I chalk the shock of the thinness of a few of the trees up to our own lack of experience. From start to finish, the work crew was hard-working, professional, and polite. And they left the place perfectly cleaned up - no small feat after removing and chipping that giant oleander shrub. Now we just need to make a plan with them to maintain the trees from here on out. :-)

"It did not go particularly well. Four of the trees they cut down were felled into my neighbors front yard. They walked up to my neighbor's front door to tell" them that they would be cutting some trees that might fall into their front yard just as the first tee was falling. During their time on my property, they damaged my driveway with a falling limb, damaged the
of a large oak by hitting it with their chipper (scraped the bark all the way to the wood) and left a huge mess in my neighbor's front yard for several days. I spent several hours picking up the smaller limbs and sticks and it took 2 or 3 more days for their truck service to come pick up the larger limbs that were left behind. After the "service" was completed for the day I called immediately to complain and they did whatever they could to remedy the situation by offering to spray the damaged tree with arbor spray and patch the driveway. They also finally sent someone to pick up the dead trees in my neighbors front yard. Luckily, my neighbors were understanding about the situation.

4 Situations Where You Need a Professional Tree Trimmer

Not sure if you should trim your own trees? Sometimes your tree problem is best left to a pro whose is trained in maintenance and other complex issues.

Tree Care and Services

Trees grow slowly so you can't afford to make a mistake by planting them in the wrong location or overlooking something that puts the tree at risk. Tree care is something most homeowners can do on their own, but an expert should be called if a tree is showing signs of disease or if limbs need to be removed.

I would strongly suggest sending your neighbors a certified letter stating that, per your earlier conversation, you consider this tree to be a hazard due to its proximity to the power lines.  Then, when and if something bad does happen, you will have a record of having informed them of it and they won't be able to say "we didn't know."

You say the county has told you it is the neighbor's problem.  Did you contact the local electric company?  They should care very much about the situation.

I would also recommend taking lots of pictures showing the proximity of the tree to the wires and that it is obviously dead.

Dead trees do sometimes stay vertical for a very long time, but it sounds like a tense situation for you.  I understand your desire to not inflame the situation, but it doesn't sound like there is anything more you can do that won't have the potential to do so.  So it becomes your responsibility to look after your own interests in the most reasonable way possible.

Unless the contract stated they were to remove the neighbor's portion at the neighbor's expense it's your bill.  You simply stated they were to remove the portion on the neighbor's side also, not who would pay for it by what I'm reading, even if that was your intention.

Another route to take:  Technically you should be able to file a claim with your neighbor's insurance for the damage done by the tree and possibly for the removal of the tree including the portion not affecting you.  They may deny the second part but if they pay for damages in addition to the coverage by your insurance you've been reimbursed.  Don't take more than the $650 and keep all records so you aren't accused of insurance fraud.  Unless the bill was broken into 2 parts stating which amount was for the removal on your side and which side was theirs their insurance probably won't argue much about only paying part of the bill.  Talk to your agent about how to best approach this.

For my money, never ? I do a walk-around yearly in the summer (when easy to work on and before the heavy fall winds in our area) and look for trees with dead crowns, losing branches everywhere but at the crown, brown branches (evergreens) or leafless branches, leaning trees, trees with visible rot, trees with major bark loss, trees with seriously damaged or eroded away roots, etc. If none of those symptoms, then I call our 100 or so trees good for the year.

Of course, the bigger the trees and the likelihood of house damageor powerline loss (especially in winter) if there is a major branch or tree fall comes into play also. I trim and cut my own trees when needed regardless of size, so my level of confidence in being able to handle anything comes into it.

If you are worried about one or more trees, call an arborist to check them out - then I would say unless there is evidence of damage - ESPECIALLY leaning trees or major branches not leafing like the rest of the tree - I would not worry having them looked at more frequently than every 10 years or so.

Tree Service reviews in Mt. Airy

I thought they did a good job we had a deal $580.00 for $800.00 worth of work as I recall as it turned out about a month or so later there was a pretty severe storm that ripped of a very large limb of the tree and landed in the yard next door almost hitting their dog.

- Peter K T.

Everyone arrived right on time. The job was professionally done. The yard looked spectacular after all the trees and shrubs were trimmed. All debris was removed. We highly recommend these professionals.
- Gail C.

The owner came out promptly and gave an estimate of $375 which included grinding down the stump & exposed roots. Although he was booked several weeks ahead, he arrived two days later with a helper and cut the tree down in sections. Afterwards he cleaned up the area and removed all the debris. Two days after that a man from

's Stump Removal came and ground down the stump/roots. I was very pleased with the service and would definitely use this company again.

Had to reschedule and come back a couple times due to weather and equipment failure but everything went great when bad luck stopped getting in the way. Will hire again.
- James T.

Called for tree service and left a message. Message was not returned. Called again several days later and left another message. Message was not returned. Called office several days later and talked with

(?). Promised to send crew to make a bid for service on two flowering pear trees. Have waited for almost three weeks. No call, no bid.
- Robert W.

Responded to my request for an estimate within 24 hours - providing a comprehensive description of work to be provided. This really saves time when comparing estimates. With this kind of work, you want to know if the debris is going to be removed as part of the cost. Completed the work within 24 hours of contract being awarded. Team members were all professional, polite and friendly. The work was beyond my expectations - You would never know those trees had been there. They removed all the wood chips and debris and left my yard clean as a whistle. I would highly recommend this company and am actually going to ask them to do further work for me later in the month.
- Kim V.

He overstated what could be done in the time I bought then, of course, gave me a price for additional hours. He stated in the contract debris removal but afterwards said he would charge me extra to haul it away. I had the city remove it (for a cost) and I owed him for an extra hour of work so when I got his bill I made a copy of the contract (outlining the debris removal) and deducted the amount I had to pay the city and sent him the balance. He cashed the check and didn't dispute it.
