"Project started with a scheduling mix up. Owner took responsibility for the mistake. Crew showed up late into the afternoon and worked into the early evening until" existing kitchen floor was removed. I was very concerned about the final look of the floor after the feathering of the existing floor with the new kitchen floor. The owner assured me that after the sanding and poly was applied I would not be able to tell the old floor from the new floor. He delivered on that promise. I was delighted the way the flooring project worked out. The sanding of the floor was dusty even though the service provider advertises a dustless system. After the sanding process a fine dust covered any uncovered surfaces. The service provider next day cleaned up as much as reasonable. I believe it is unrealistic to expect no dust residue after the sanding process. My impression is that without the measures taken by the services provider (backpack vacuums when sanding) the dust problem would have been a lot more severe. Service provider needed a 240V to power the large floor sander. Without talking to me he disconnected the electric cable for my range (not being currently used because of a kitchen remodel project) inside the electrical box and connected a cable to the back of the circuit breaker for his sanding machine. I would have been more comfortable if he used the existing dryer or range plugs instead of going inside the main electrical box. Talking to me first would have been greatly appreciated. In conclusion I would like to restate the fact that I was completely satisfied with the work performed by
and would not hesitate recommending this service provider.

is a professional through and through. He always confirmed appointments, showed up on time and explained everything in detail. There were" no surprises. He was always available to answer my questions (that says a lot as I am notorious in asking many questions). We scheduled out about 6-7 weeks ahead of time. He had an unexpected family emergency that delayed him one week yet he made me aware of it right away. He arrived on the new scheduled start day and kept me informed on the progress with daily photos and texts (I was out of state). He has an artistic eye to have multi-patterned tile flow well. I wanted a couple of newly laid tiles replaced and he didn't take it personally. He replaced them immediately. Truly a pleasure to do business with.

If you're looking for eco-friendly flooring, research the composition of the flooring, as well as the adhesives and glues.

Wood floor alternatives

Consumers have many choices beyond traditional hardwood floors, including wood laminate and renewable sources such as bamboo, cork and even leather. Some alternatives look virtually the same as hardwoods.

Angie's Answers

From the wall street journal online:

"Etiquette and tipping experts agree that tipping a contractor and his employees isn't expected because contractors offer to do a job for you at a specific price. Any extra money they would want would be built into their bid. Also, it's a business relationship rather than one where they are performing a personal service for you like a waiter or a maid. But if the employees do extra jobs around the house, then experts say it is appropriate to tip a cash amount equivalent to the task; "tip gifts" such as cookies and drinks can count. "The key to tipping is whether or not it was outside the scope of what was normally expected," says Mark Brenner, author of "Tipping for Success!"

My opinion is that a little bit of courtesy (snacks, drinks, expression of appreciation etc.) goes a long way and upon completion of their work you feel compelled by a job well done to offer a little extra in the form of a tip - go for it, but do not feel obligated.
I agree with your choice - this is about the only product that can realistically, for a large room, be taken out and cleaned up after a flood and reused, thouhg carpet can be if you strip it into smaller pieces to carry wet, AND you have somewhere to wash and dry it - that is usually the problem. However, bear in mind it still has to be done within about 2 days or mildew/mold will grow on it, and may or may not be totally removeable. My personal preferences - mostly because their products are consistent, the joints stay snapped together, and they are not overly soft (a problem with cheap vinyls) are Pergo, Tarkett, Armstrong. Whatever you buy, be sure it can come back apart - some plank products are not made with a self-adhering contact glue in the joints that prevent you from taking it apart again, and some brands their snap design, while maybe better at preventing joint separation, cannot feasibly be unsnapped without tearing or breaking it off. Also, be sure whatever brandname and product line you choose it 100% vinyl (other than the urethane surface protective layer) - many vinyl floor products have paper or fiber cores or other water-absorbing components. Remember that, on concrete, since it wicks soil moisture through it, you till need a 6 mil vapor barrier under the flooring and positively sealed all around the edges to avoid the risk of mold growing on the underside of the vinyl.
Agreed.  If you have existing cracking in porcelain you need to know the cause first.  I don't know of any reputable contractor that would dare install tile over existing tile.  Also, any manufacturer warranties for defects would be null due to improper installation.  Did the contractor offer this solution or did you ask for it?  The mear fact that he is agreeing to or offering it tells me you need to leave this guy for someone who knows what they are talking about before he does only half the job which will have to be redone in the near future, costing you more in the long run.

I get so many calls from customers that were talked into a "cheaper" way to do something only to find the work very sub-par.  The sad part is they are out the money they spent in the first place along with the additional amount I have to charge just to undo what the first contractor did before I can do it right.  This floor could end up costing you double what it should if it's not done right.

came by to see the job. The bedroom had a rug over the floor and the floor had
dark black areas on it. We had recently moved into this home and wanted to have all hardwood floors.
He mentioned that he has a minimum fee of $450, which seemed reasonable to me.
The date of the service, Mr.

and 2 other men arrived on time and went right to work.
They were very professional and kept the dust to a minimum - almost none at all.
Then before they left, they vacuumed the hall next to the bedroom and any other area where they walked.
That was a nice touch. They returned over the next 2 days to complete the

The estimation process was easy.

came to the house, was professional, obtained all measurements and got back to me in a couple of days with my estimates. I had 3 companies provide estimates and

came back to me with the best overall deal. The got me scheduled for work quickly and were even able to start a day early. All work was done professionally and the workmanship was great. My home looks new again.

He arrived at the agreed upon time and did the work quickly. He arranged for an additional helper and also found someone to roll the carpets to the two bedrooms that adjoined the living room. Work area was cleaned up afterwards. Reasonable cost and close to prior estimate. Very friendly as well.
I also was given an estimate and guidelines on the threshold pieces to buy. I did like buying my own flooring from the retailer of my choice.

Our Situation

When we bought our house, the previous owners had installed Pergo in the living room and hallway. The first thing we did? Ripped up the Pergo to find 1-1/2 white oak flooring (a very unusual size) that had a ton of potential. But halfway through this project, we discovered quite a few problems (e.g. cutout notches under all the door frames, a hap-hazard repair with a different type of wood in the hall--see pictures). It took us 8 years to get up the nerve to move everything out and have the floors refinished.

After getting 5 estimates, we hired

. We were impressed by the reviews on Angie's list, but concerned about the not-so-great reviews on Yelp (complaints like: "The floors look great, but it took them 3 weeks to come back and put in a piece of trim--1 star"). I realized that these reviewers probably aren't familiar with the "ebb and flow" of home renovations and most likely have some growing up to do. So, we contracted with Dominion anyway and had the floors refinished while we were on vacation. After all, what is more important: Beautiful, quality work, or experiencing complete convenience during the process?
The Quote
The original quote came to $3375 for the living room, hallway, and three bedrooms. Here's the scope of work from our invoice:
Sanding, staining light color, and finishing with 3 coats of water base finish, new matching shoe molding, oak frame around fire place, furnishing and installing 1-1/2 inch oak strip in hall and where missing or damaged, moving bigger pieces of furniture and beds out and back to accommodate refinishing in two stages, and all materials, tax, and labor.

The Experience

came out to provide us with an estimate. He arrived on time and emailed the estimate the next day. I called to schedule and made a deposit. A week before, I called again to get an idea of when to expect the team to arrive (yes, I had to be proactive).

and his crew arrived when they said they would and got to work right away. Our house-sitter emailed pictures every day and gave us updates. I realized that two dark stains in our bedroom might not sand out, so I called

and asked if they could patch those while they were at it. Luckily this was the room that they were going to finish last. He had to special order the wood, but was able to do it. That added another $300 to the final bill.
The Results

Our floors are absolutely beautiful!
Pittsfield Flooring Contractors Provider Name Locked
and his crew even installed baseboards in our office that we had purchased, but never got around to installing. We are thrilled with the results!

- Leslie W.

They were professional. They asked my feedback and made sure furniture was placed where it should be. They left the areas clean. The owner comes to the site at the beginning of the job and then returns when the the job is complete - before the installers leave. His personal attention to the job is excellent.

was wonderful! I live in Orange County but needed to refloor my condo in Studio City. I had three estimates done and Orys was the lowest as well as the least amount of time.
Pittsfield Flooring Contractors Provider Name Locked
made it a priority to work with me and my schedule in regards to doing the initial estimate as well as the actual install. The timeline he gave me for the job (2-3 days) was spot on and the finished product looks amazing. I would highly highly highly recommend
