The concept of universal design is the incorporation of ideas, designs and products that blend with the décor of your home while also including elements that people of all ages and people with disabilities or handicaps will appreciate. Here are a few tips to ensure your home is enjoyable for all your family, friends and guests.
Make your home accessible: Consider installing a gradual sidewalk to your front door and a stoop that is raised to the bottom of the door to avoid any steps from the driveway. Easy for you, easy for everyone. Think it will look like a care center? Think again. Install plantings or planter beds and bushes between the sidewalks to soften the look or add some interest by curving the sidewalk.
Make your home safe: Installing grab bars in bathrooms, showers and entries are great for people of all ages. Hard surface floors that are easy to maneuver, adequate lighting and wide hallways are just a few more ways to make your home safe.
Make your home comfortable: Consider installing countertops of varied height, easily accessible cabinets, sinks, lever door handles, curbless custom tile showers, lowered switches and raised outlets. Any one of these is easy to incorporate, will be functional with your décor and will be appreciated by everyone (such as the little ones).
Keep in mind that universal design is for all ages, not just the elderly and can be incorporated into new or existing homes.
