"My letter to
and Spa on 1/26/2015: We own a rental home in
that is rented by our grandson (Pat). On November 4," 2014, your company installed a new chimney liner, a Lopi Wood Fireplace Insert & “GreenStart” lighter at this home. Shortly after install, Pat noted that when he built a fire, the house would fill up with smoke. No matter what he tried, nothing seemed to stop the smoking each time he opens the door to add wood. He called and talked to Rod and was told that he wasn’t getting the fire hot enough and that he’d probably “clogged the chimney”. The glass on front of insert already was getting blackened as well, so Rod told him to get the fire as “hot as he could” and it would ‘burn the clogged material’ out of the fireplace. Then the next day the ‘Green Start’ ignition quit working. This was 3 weeks to the day after the installation – Nov. 25th. Pat called service dept. and they said they’d send someone out. They did, but then they told him they’d have to ‘order the part. No one would schedule him for service until the part came in. He made several calls over the next couple of weeks and no one would return his calls, so I decided to take over. I called on about
15th and got a young woman who told me “Oh, that part has been sitting here on the shelf!” I said I’d like to get it put in and she told me that the only person who could put it in was on vacation. She did not schedule this until January 6th! On the 3rd of January the “blower” on the fireplace stopped working. I called on the morning of the 6th and left a message at service department to let them know they would now have to look at the blower while they were out that day. I asked that the call be returned if there were any questions. No call returned, so I assumed it would be handled. When the repairman (
) came on the 6th he knew nothing about checking the blower and when I called to ask
about this he said that he couldn’t do anything after I had left the message “because the repairmen were already out in the field”. Really –repairmen
’t have cell phones?
could not replace the igniter after all because he said the way the insert was installed it would take 2 men to pull it out so he could get to it. He said blower was probably a ‘snap disk’ problem and he didn’t have one with him. He called the shop and told them they’d need to send installers out to do the igniter and bring a blower. (Now this is after I was told by the office
that “there was only one man who could install these igniters, and he had been on vacation so we had to wait til
. 6th!”)
called Pat back that night and said in a couple of days they would send someone to do igniter and blower. The original installers came to install igniter and they still did not know anything about the blower! They did fix the igniter, but in doing so, rerouted the wiring and now instead of the faceplate being flat against the brick, the faceplate and brick have a large gap between them, and now the hole they made in the brick to fit the insert shows and does not look good. They said the blower was completely shot and would have to order a new one. During this operation they scratched the fireplace faceplates. They said paint would cover it, but they didn’t have any with them. Note: At this time, and subsequent repair visits, the installers all said that the “smoke” issue was not due to ‘clogging’ due to a low temp fire. Pat was told there was no way in 3 weeks the chimney could be clogged that bad. A few days later, out comes another repairman – this time the ‘service manager,
’ who (by himself – not 2 men) took the fireplace apart again and said “this blower is fine” just needed a new wire and/or switch. So
fixed it, and it works – but he also did not have any paint for the scratch and the hole in the brick was still now showing. When they first installed they evidently ‘shoved’ the insert over far enough to mostly cover the hole they made. Now they said they shouldn’t push it over that hard as that is probably why the wire on the blower failed. And/or the rerouting of the wiring for the igniter is causing the spacing problem. Now
decided to make things right and said he would send out a brand new fireplace front and faceplate. Nice. However when these installers came and took out the old faceplates, they carefully put them face down on the carpet so they would not get dinged again. However they failed to do that with the new faceplate and managed to drop the fireplace tools on the new face and scratched the new ones. Still no paint with them! These scratches are not nearly as bad as the first time, but we paid good money for a new insert, that works poorly at best with all the smoking it still does, and the service we have received, it's almost a joke. If it weren’t so much money I’d just send my complaint to the BBB and maybe a scathing report to Angies List and let it go. But this is a lot of money to us and here we are now with a brand new fireplace insert that was installed in a manner that leaves it unpleasing to look at because we can see the hole in the brick – and it smokes every time the door is opened. The old fireplace that was supposedly no good NEVER SMOKED up the house. Several of the repairmen told Pat that this has been a problem with these inserts! And there is something terribly wrong with your service and communication within your company. We have been told many different stories by each and every person we have dealt with during this ordeal. Several have said “the young woman who answered phones and took care of scheduling” was at fault and has been let go. Two repairmen say we need a new blower – the service manager says old one was fine, just needed wire/part fixed. The sales person I talked to originally about getting the igniter replaced gave me a long story about how busy you were and we would just have to be patient.
acted like I was a bother to deal with when I talked to him on the phone. So here we are. Back to a smoking fireplace insert that has had no less than 5 service calls in 2 months. Still scratched (Pat finally stopped by to pick up the paint for it himself). There is still a hole in brick that is not covered, and the excuses for the smoking have been several. One repairman said it was the barometric pressure……hmmm, every day? One or two of the installers tried building a fire himself to see if Pat was building fire “correctly”. It smoked for them too. The wood Pat burns is dry.
says we need to call
Industries and complain. I think your company should be the one calling the manufacturer and getting this figured out. I had Pat call the manufacturer and he left a message for
, and they haven’t returned the call yet, but we will probably try again. We’d like to have resolution to the smoke that comes into house each and every time the door is opened - this is not satisfactory the way it is. We'd like a larger back plate/faceplate to cover the hole in the fireplace front or somehow refit the existing one to cover the broken brick. This letter was sent to
on 1/26/15 and today is 1/29/15 and I've had no response.

"They were very respectful but they couldn't do the chimney cap work I needed. Also, it was guaranteed that they would contact me by Tuesday and they didn't contact me until Wednesday.

Fireplaces

Most people enjoy sitting in front of a fire on a cold day, but traditional, wood-burning fireplaces come with a few disadvantages. They tend to waste energy, require maintenance and pose some risk. Read this guide to discover several alternatives that provide the same ambiance, but with fewer downsides.

He hasn't legally abandoned the job as long as he is still showing up and doing something, even if it is very little, from time to time.  You'll have to fire him first.  Have documentation that the job is not being done in a timely manner, showing when he has and has not worked.  Be ready for a fight and probably a legal battle since he will likely still want more money or won't refund money paid for incomplete work.

Change the locks and inform the contractor their services on your property are terminated.  Tell him if anyone representing his company enters your property they will be considered trespassing and will be prosecuted.  Then hire another company to check the work he has done to make sure it is right.  Somehow I doubt it is given the nature of his work ethic.  Then have the new contractor repair any bad workmanship and finish the job.  Keep records as any documented things that have to be redone will help your case against the first contractor.

I would recommend finding a good hearth retailer in your area and work with them to select a stove that is right for your home. They should also be able to arrange for certified installer to handle the installation. Keep in mind many areas require a city or county permit for the installation, and it may be wise to have the chimney and fireplace inspected by a certified chimney sweep beforehand.

Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
because of her recommendation and their selection.

, the salesperson was very friendly and appeared knowledgeable. I made the purchase on April 1, 2014. On April 25 I called
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
to help me arrange for the plumber who did their gas connections so that the necessary gas work would be completed before the installation. On April 30th,
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
, their employee who does the insert installations arrived with the unit to install it. Over the next couple of weeks the installation continued in multiple visits by the electrician, the employees who installed the flues, and the town inspector. The

employees would usually be late, by several hours, necessitating me to call
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
to try to find out if they were coming. No apologies for their tardiness and no one ever called to tell me that they would be late or not show up. By the middle of June, I was still waiting for a piece of trim and my remote control. Since it was summer, I did not mind waiting. However, I had to call
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
once a week receive an update on the status of the trim. Aftersix weeks he did not take my calls since he was afraid I would be angry with him and so
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
, the owner took my calls. It turns out, that neither
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
nor
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
knew where the person who fabricates the trim had gone or if he was still working for them! I had,by then, surmised that their business practices left a lot to be desired, by I was shocked to find out that they had no idea when my fireplace installation would be completed. Finally, by the end of June, the fabricator was located and my installation was completed two weeks later, along with the delivery of my remote control. Over two months from the day they started installation and over three months since I ordered the fireplace, was the work completed. Then the real troubles began. At the end of October, I started using the fireplace and it started "ghosting", going out within a minute of turning it on and extinguishing the pilot light with it. After trying to restart the pilot light, the handle to the pilot light fell off. I called to have
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
come by to repair it and I was told it would be at least two weeks! I stated that that was unacceptable, that it was a new fireplace and I had only used it a couple of times.
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
came out the next day while on his lunch break, fixed the pilot light handle and had it working again. A few days later,I used it again and it went out again. This happened repeatedly and once when trying to relight the fireplace a huge ball of orange flame crashed against the glass window. Fortunately it did not break it. After one more visit a week later by
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
, he arranged to have the young man,
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
, come by and take a look at the flues. It was now almost Thanksgiving.
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
came into the house, after examining the flues and said it was his fault, he had crushed the exhaust flue when he had put the cap on. Unfortunately, two months later, the same thing has happened again. The pilot light handle has fallen off and the fireplace is ghosting. I spent $4,000 and put up with a great deal of aggravation and still do not have a working fireplace.

If there was an additional service that needed to be done, that was an additional charge. I wasn't crazy about that because I thought it was all included in the deal, but I needed it done and they did a good job. 2 different techs showed up 2 different times. Overall, I was really happy with them. They came on time and were at my home for less than an hour each time. They were very thorough, too.

On time, very efficient and conscious of my home, first time that my fireplace was serviced. I bought my home 2 years ago, and I believe that the fireplace had not been serviced before ever. our home was built in 2004, so we were definitely wanting to have this done. after the service we could not have been happier! it looked great and the heat output was noticeably increased. I would highly recommend this service! will absolutely use again in the future! very happy!

Good job however did not know how to put logs back correctly. Should have taken a picture, laid them out in order, or made a sketch etc. He asked me if I had instructions which I do not as fireplace logs were installed years ago and I purchased condo 3 years ago.

Very professional and easy-going.
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
patiently answered all my questions, and helped me gain a better understand of my gas log set. Although I thought the final charge was a bit high for a system check with no parts needed, I would Definitely use him or his company again, as I place a high value on expertise and approachability. We will be looking to upgrade our system this Spring, and plan to include

This provider showed up, gave an estimate, took a deposit did the demo and then skipped town with the rest of my money. Now I have a hole in my wall where the fireplace tile should be and no work being done. I have hired another contractor to finish the job. I REPORTED THIS TO ANGIE'S LIST AND THEY HAVE DECIDED TO ALLOW HIM TO CONTINUE HIS AFFILIATION WITH ANGIE'S LIST. THINK ABOUT THIS WHEN IT COMES TIME TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP WITH ANGIE'S LIST. I had nothing but problems with one of the fireplaces inserts. The fan speed decreases when I turn on the fireplace light. They originally thought it was one of the fireplace components. After 3-4 service calls and many hours of troubleshooting, they determined that their electrical installation was probably at fault. Now I am waiting for a follow up call from them to schedule yet another service call to fix the electrical installation issue. In general
Pontiac Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
has been poor at follow-up phone calls after a failed service call. I always have to follow-up with them. I am frustrated with their customer service and inability to fix the fireplace issue the first time.
