What is spray foam insulation?

Perhaps you are a homeowner who has an attic that was recently refinished, but it still feels drafty in the winter and hot in the summer? Or, maybe you’re looking to save on your home heating bills?

Typically, insulation is added to a building or structure to retain heat in during the winter and to keep heat out during the summer. If you were to consider your home’s exterior walls as its outer shell, insulation is basically the stuffing or lining inside those walls. Insulation can also be found in a home's attic and interior walls.

Poor insulation can lead to heat loss and high utility bills. It can also make areas of the home like the attic uninhabitable. A common solution to solving these problems is to add spray foam insulation.

Typically, spray foam is a concoction of Isocyanate and resin that mixes together at the tip of a spray gun. This mixture creates a foam that can be sprayed into wall cavities.

Spray foam is a great way to fill air gaps and to get into those hard-to-reach places where cold or hot outside air can infiltrate the home. Most spray foam insulation can expand to about 100 times its original volume during the curing process, which helps fill all available gaps within a space. Spray foam can be applied more quickly than the traditional fiberglass batt insulation, which must be rolled out within a large space and cut to fit.

Be forewarned, however, that inhaling spray foam insulation can cause health problems, so you will want to take precautions like wearing a filtration mask when applying the product and ensure any room where you will be working is thoroughly ventilated.

If you are thinking about adding spray foam insulation to your home, you should consider hiring a handyman to complete the project. Regardless if you are looking for a Chicago handyman or a Los Angeles handyman service, Angie’s List will arm you with detailed ratings and reviews on handymen and other service professionals.
