"The ants came marching in. Lots and lots of ants. and a few spiders too.
had a really great deal for $69. A one time ant and insect" treatment. I had priced a couple of other providers outside of Angie's list and was quoted between $125 and $175.
valued it at $199. So, I bought the big deal. Well, it turns out it wasn't that big of a deal. The standard one time treatment offer usually comes with a 30 day warranty. Not this deal. If I wanted the work guaranteed it was an extra $50. If I wanted the exact same service other providers were quoting me I would have to pay $119. And the sales person was quick to warn me that by treating my yard and house I might stir the bugs up and they might actually come back in force. I am sure this is a factual statement. But, it seems sort of disingenuous to offer a service that usually comes with a 30 day guarantee and then charge extra for the warranty. PROS: The service man was courteous, professional, and highly knowledgeable. The price for a one time treatment was a good value at $69.00. He was able to do a treatment that seems effective (so far) and that didn't require us to leave the house for several hours. CONS: Angie's list only allows the vendor to contact you through Angie's List messaging. Which means none of the information you fill in online to get the deal gets passed to the vendor. Vendor doesn't clearly spell out that the one time treatment does not come with a warranty of any kind. I can find this same service for significantly less than $199.

The quickest and most effective method of pest control? It's not at the hardware store. How much does it cost to hire an exterminator to eliminate pests?

Angie's Answers

You have a lot of questions. I will try to cover them all.

First, mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime.
Second, unlike rats, mice are very small; it would take a major infestation to generate a persistent odor as indicated.

Elimination starts by sealing the exterior foundation of the home, door sweeps, broken windows, cracks in the foundation, holes around electrical service, water faucets and dryer vents.

Secondly, food sources must be eliminated. Mice only need 1 gram of food a day and they extract water directly from the food they digest.

Next, mice infestations are more localized than people think, bait under the house might not have any effect. Heat sources like refrigerators and hot water heaters are suspect as a base of operation.

Snap traps are highly effective when used where dropping are found. Use a variety of bait, peanut butter (avoid this if children are present), brownie, fruit and even dental floss tied to the pedal (nesting material).

As for the odor, look for an enzyme based cleaner / deodorizer.

If the problem continues seek the help of a Pest Control Professional with rodent experience.

Hope that helps,

Andrew Deluca

The quickest way I've found to get rid of them (as opposed to preventing them - see answer above) is to put a half cup of cider vinegar (must be cider vinegar) in a jar or bowl and put a half-dozen drops of dishwashing liquid on top of it.  Leave out on a counter wherever the problem exists. Empty and refill as needed.
Legally, it needs to be pest control - wildly boring technical explanation regarding Federal pesticide laws that I won't bother you with.  Having said that, depending on where they are located in your chimnet, you could do it yourselt.  Most wasp control products will shoot 12'-20'.  So, if they are in a lower section of your chimney you wait until dark (they return to their nests before dark) and reach up above your damper and spray the nests.  If you're not averse to being on your roof, do the same thing from the top.  Otherwise, hire a professional.
An exterminator - you have to careful that the pests are driven out of the attic BEFORE the entrance they were using is closed up, otherwise you have dead decaying animals in your attic - can cause a stench that lasts for weeks.

Came home from grocery store Sunday afternoon to find a squirrel leaping around my living room. Called every number listed for the company multiple times, leaving my call back number. Tried multiple times over 1 hour and 45 min. No call back. You should not list Sunday hours and emergency service if you do not provide it.

Provider inspected area, including exterior foundation.
Bait boxes were placed in utility room in basement and in garage. I have had on instances of mice since that time.

They use multiple methods to inform me of upcoming treatments (email and phone). The technician is always on time, and takes the time to explain the service he is providing. They have been good at amending their service to keep my one year old child safe from any chemicals.

Excellent, thoughtful service; easy to reach/prompt call-back if voice message left, and humane treatment of the animal. Spoke to Bill in advance of travelling home where my security system indicated activity inside, and again after arrival/discovery of live squirrel inside living quarters and failed attempt to coax it out an open door. The squirrel was still in the house and couldn't be found, but
Hilo Exterminators Provider Name Locked
arrived promptly and performed a thorough

, then set traps; In less than one hour afterwards, the squirrel was caught in one of the traps, and within minutes of notifying

that the squirrel had been captured,

returned the call and then arrived within 10 minutes to pick up the squirrel and traps.
Hilo Exterminators Provider Name Locked
was very kind and gentle in handling the squirrel, speaking to it soothingly as he carried it quickly out of the house (while still inside the trap cage).
Hilo Exterminators Provider Name Locked
explained how the squirrel would be released in a happy environment some distance from my home. The wonderful, caring people at
Hilo Exterminators Provider Name Locked
turned a scary situation into a positive experience, and I recommend them highly. (Cost was $190 for the

Hilo Exterminators Provider Name Locked
did two inspections for roof rats. He recommended that I hire two separate contractors to seal various areas of my home. He said sealing those areas would keep the rats inside or outside, depending on where they were at the time of the sealing. He said if they were stuck inside, they'd run out of food eventually and we'd be able to catch them in traps. I hired both of the contractors he recommended. They were expensive and one of them had to come back several times to repair faulty work in my garage. The other one missed an appointment entirely, but eventually got the work done for about $600. This work did not resolve the rat problem. I called
Hilo Exterminators Provider Name Locked
to let him know and arrange for him to do some trapping, and he never called back. So I've spent approximately $1,000 and am pretty much right where I started. Thanks,

P.S. I should mention that I do not think I found

rk to accomplish the removal. Truly blessed to have found these folks on Angie's list.I was extremely happy with their work, as were my tenants. Very professional, prompt, and businesslike. They installed a one way door, so squirrels could get out, but not get back in, and treated other possible areas of entry with repellent. Then, they made arrangements to return, remove the door and plug things up. Truly, a "no aggravation" situation for me as a landlord, and no time off needed from work. Very happy to have found these folks on Angie's List.

The people coming to the house were friendly and carried themselves in a professional manner, and communicated well.
We had idea where the critters were coming from, and they confirmed this, and checked other areas to see if the garage and separate crawlspace were inhabited. (Later, I realized that they didn't check the attic....)...More /> Some entry spots were located, and filled with a foam sealant. I was later told that unfortunately, they would eventually chew through this, and indeed had made it though one spot by the next visit. ( One of the smaller entry ways has been nibbled at, but it's still maintaining a functional blockage so far, a couple of months later)
The set up: They call you back to set the next appointment, or you can call them, if you need an appointment sooner. Well, OK-- but just LOTS of extra steps for everyone, yes?
I would have preferred to set up the next visit with the service person while they were here at the house. Or perhaps set up all the visits with a single phone call, then called to change if needed.
So at the last visit in the contract, I still had a hole in the foam, rats are still coming in and being trapped and removed. Problem not really solved---but admittedly, there was a **sizable hole** that will need concrete work to fill.
Still, I would have preferred them refer me to someone who could do that job from the very start, or give me the option to pay extra and have them subcontract it to someone right then. At the last visit, they were able to recommend someone to do a full crawlspace cleanup/'sealing'. I'm getting a quote, but looking for bids as well.
Lesson learned: confirm that the entry spots will be well and truly sealed before spending time, money and effort on repeated trapping.
