First, I love my new bathroom, it looks great, especially compared to what it was. The floor was rotted out in places, tub and sink had no finish left, wall tile was cheap plastic, floor tile was in bad shape. There was a lot of work to do in a very small space.
and
are general contractors who do a little of everything.
said up front that he is not a plumber, tile man, sheet rock man, etc. This was OK with me because In my opinion if you want the work done by professional plumbers, tilers, etc. you would have to use a company like ReBath, but it would cost about 3-4 times as much. The price I paid was much more reasonable and within my budget.
works a full time job, so it understandably took awhile, especially since we had a lot of bad weather during this period. Some work had to be done outside and for about 5 days our whole area was snowed in, roads were very bad for this part of the country.
Positive experience:
1)
and
were very professional, polite, and pleasant. I liked them a lot.
2)
found a couple of plumbing things that needed to be fixed that were not visible when he gave me a price; he showed them to me and fixed them without charging more.
3) They were very meticulous about cleaning up behind themselves when they left each day.
4)
built some very nice insets in the bathtub tiles.
Reasons for a lower rating:
1) I chose small white subway tiles for the walls, which as I watched them putting them up, realized that these were probably the hardest type of tiles to work with. But I had asked
several times before purchasing the tile if something else would be better, (quicker, easier), he said: "Get whatever you want and I can work with them". They are uneven in places. Some are gray not white; (fortunately the gray ones are on the end that is mostly covered with shower curtain and you don't really notice them unless taking a shower. Of course it is not their fault that some of the tiles came discolored, but they should have noticed and put them in the box with the broken ones to be returned and exchanged. But the main problem I am having with the tiles is that the grout dust was apparently not completely removed before the sealer was applied. The tiles were not shiny, but were dull and rough. I pointed it out, they didn't say much, just that the sealer was not supposed to do that, but did not offer to try to fix it. I am still working on them myself, gradually removing sealer from the tiles with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol to get the sealer off the tiles while trying to not remove it from the grout. I emailed
to ask what kind of sealer he had used, I read that you could use it to remove itself. He replied with the product name. I looked online and could only find it in
size and it was costly, I emailed back and asked if he had any left over? At that time I did say that I honestly did not feel that I should have to do this myself. He never responded.
2)
did not cut the door short enough to clear the floor
. I showed it to him on the day he finished the job and I paid him the balance. I asked him to adjust the door, he said that he did not have a saw with him and would have to come back in a few days to fix it. He never came back. I have another carpenter coming to fix the door for me, at additional cost. 3) The faucet and spout in the tub were not installed correctly and were very loose. I had to have a plumber come out and fix that, and the sink that was wobbly on the pedestal. 4) Overall there was a communication problem.
did not explain things very well up front. Example: before he prepared the bid I asked for white bead board wainscoting, he said OK and included it on the bid. When he brought it in, it was unfinished wood. I said "I asked for white", he said, "you just need to paint it". If a customer is required to do any part of the work themselves shouldn't that be in the original agreement? The lack of communication also resulted in a few other unexpected outcomes. He was often hard to reach by phone, and did not return emails promptly if at all. I feel that they should have helped me with the tiles, if nothing else than bringing me the left-over sealer.
definitely should have come back as promised and fixed the door. If there was some reason why they could not I would have understood if they had called and explained. And I think he should have tried to figure out why the tub faucet/spout were loose and fixed them. But again, let me finish by saying that I love my bathroom and will post before and after pictures.

knew the painting task was going to be extensive and would take a long time to complete since the home was built in 1940. He also knew we were preparing the home for sale since my Mother had gone into Assisted Living. The painting was to be accomplished in various phases, and he was open to completing the job over an extensive period of time. Before he started, he carefully explained what his estimate covered. Initially, we excluded closets because they were in fair shape, but we later added them at an extra cost because his work was excellent. He began by painting the interior, and since we had to do repairs to some areas. he worked within our schedule to get the interior completed. The interior walls were plaster so they required more work than if working with drywall. He skimmed the walls to make sure most of the imperfections were taken care of and finished as well as possible. He also painted the new kitchen cabinets and all of the trim work that was new in each room.
worked with us to insure the house looked as well as could be based on the age of the walls. Since the kitchen was gutted, this room required a lot of painting on the cabinets and walls and since wallpaper had been removed from the kitchen, a lot of skimming of the walls was done. He removed all drapes and covered the areas to prevent any paint damage to the floors and furniture. He also recommended a carpenter to do the exterior repairs. They worked together as each area was painted. He worked within our schedule and if something needed to be changed, he was open to making those changes and often offered better suggestions.
was pleasant and dedicated to completing high quality work at a more than fair price based on the work that had to be done.

I CONTACTED HIM ABOUT DOING SOME WORK ON TWO OF MY PROPERTIES. HE EVENTUALLY ARRANGED TO MEET MY SISTER, AS I WAS OUT OF TOWN AT THE TIME AT THE PROPERTY TO ASSESS WHAT WORK NEEDED TO BE DONE. HE PROMISED TO GET US A QUOTE IN A DAY BUT NEVER DID SO. I SENT HIM EMAILS AND CALLED HIM SEVERAL TIMES BUT HE WOULDN'T RETURN MY CALLS OR RESPOND TO MY EMAILS.I FIND THIS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL INDEED. HE CLAIMED HE WAS QUITE BUSY, BUT HE DID TELL US HE WOULD GET US A QUOTE. THE FACT THAT HE NEVER RESPONDED, EVEN TO SAY HE COULDN'T DO THE WORK WAS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL INDEED.I EXPECTED THAT A COMPANY RATED A ON ANGIE'S LIST WOULD BE AT LEAST PROFESSIONAL AND RELIABLE.

A TENANT WAS WAITING TO MOVE INTO THE PROPERTY AND I HAVE NOW LOST THE TENANT BECAUSE HE FAILED TO DO THE WORK ON TIME AND I KEPT WAITING, THINKING HE WOULD DO IT.

AT THE MOMENT, I don't THINK IT IS WORTH SUBSCRIBING TO ANGIE'S LIST AT ALL IF I CANNOT RELY ON THE RATINGS I FIND THERE.

It did not go well. He came by himself and cleaned some leaves off the roof. He did not clean any of the stain off the roof and he did not replace the rubber boot around the vents on the roof as we had contracted. He partially sprayed some product on my deck. He also repaired an area of my roof with masking tape and painted over it, which came off the first time it rained. He partially applied some off brand water sealant to my deck. He never finished the projects and when I called him about it he said that he was not coming back. I made several calls to him and he told me that he could not afford the sealant to apply to the deck.

Hooks gave an estimate the next business day after I called and scheduled the work for one week later. He and an assistant came on time and did the job in a morning. The results look pretty good, although there some gaps and exposed upainted surfaces on the adjacent cabinets because of the difference in the designs of the ranges. But Hooks was up front about the cosmetic aspect of it and didn't quote me for a complete finish. He gave advice on finding inexpensive products to finish it myself.

He recommended some people that could take care of the work. But he is going to come back and take care of some things for me. He is going to do some work on my porch.

realized the soffit was rotten and set out removing the gutters and replaced the wood. I had been worried about one piece of it but he showed us what the problem was and why the entire piece needed replacing it. I never felt this was anything but critically necessary and trusted his judgement. I am already thinking of items that need attention because I finally feel I have someone to do the work that I trust completely.

The provider did an excellent job in terms of quality and was quite reasonable in terms of price; he was out of town a week after he started the project and then had problems connecting with the renter that occupied my rental property to gain access to

came on time on the day we agreed. He evaluated the problem and decided on the repair needed to rehang the mantle. He did the work quickly and did an excellent job. He left no dust and cleaned up after the repair. He went out of his way and even repaired some "holes" made in the wood of the of the mantle when it fell. He was very maticulous and friendly. I feel his pricing was very fair adquate and plan to use him again for some other repairs and things needed around the house. The experience was a pleasure and my mantle looks great. It is very sturdy. I am a very satisfied customer.
