Jason Grover of Mundelein needed a carpet cleaner in a hurry, and JEJ owner James Jassak obliged. "He was able to arrive in a couple of days, and he tremendously improved the carpet," Grover says, in one of 19 Page of Happiness nominations in the last year. "It's almost a shame to walk on the carpets and push down the nice clamshell raking patterns he made."

Jassak puts three decades of experience to work on his job; he worked for another cleaning company for many years, and started his own business in 2008, providing various kinds of cleaning services but specializing in carpet and upholstery.

Tom Tabrosky of Ingleside learned firsthand the breadth of Jassak's knowledge when he hired him to clean his carpets and bathroom grout. "The 15-year-old white carpet looks fresh again, and the disgusting grout looks brand-new!" he says.

Jassak, whose work doesn't require a license, offers environmentally friendly cleaning products upon request. He remains a one-man operation and foresees keeping it that way. "From the time I get the call to the moment the job is closed, I know I have total control over the work," he says.

Tigele Tile & Mosaics Inc. | Chicago

Owner Johann Janoschka's work is steeped in history. Even the company name is rich with Old-World meaning - "tigele," pronounced "tee-geh-lay," derives from the old English term for "roofing shingle." He learned the trade in the style of European masters and says he strives to apply the same dedication and artistry to all his tiling, ceramic and remodeling work.

"His team is made up of hard-working, Old-World craftsmen," says Chicago member Bill Wangerin, in one of 14 Page of Happiness nominations the company received in the last year. He says Janoschka and his crew did an amazing job replacing his damaged tiles. "These guys are truly artists," he adds.

Janoschka spent several years as owner of Kokos Marble, focusing on new construction, but once business dried up along with the economy, he turned his attention to remodeling. He attributes his perfect grade to a fixation on detail. "My goal for every job is 100 percent satisfaction," he says. "Not 99 percent; 100 percent."

Thomas Ratcliffe of Hammond, Ind., says he couldn't be more satisfied with the job Janoschka and his crew did on installing a glass and natural stone backsplash in his kitchen.

"He drove out to my house the night I contacted him and had an estimate ready the next morning," he says. "The tiles were laid perfectly, and they clearly take great pride in their work."

Janoschka admits his work is high-end and tends to cost more, but says it pays off. "I don't increase my profits by buying cheap materials," he says. "I use the best materials available, and I think it shows in the work."

He holds a Chicago home repair license and says he uses the most environmentally friendly products he can find, including low-VOC and no-VOC materials. "People don't have to ask for it; I do it automatically," he says.

He also puts his skills to work for the community, including teaching children how to work with mosaics and creating artistic panels for a children's hospital.

Domicile Consulting | Chicago

Wendi Gardner of Chicago says co-owner Ross Neag helped her pinpoint energy loss in her home, plus treated her incessantly barking pug nicely. "Ross showed me both the little and larger things I could do to make my home warmer in winter," she says in one of 15 Page of Happiness nominations the company received in the last year.

Domicile, a three-time Super Service Award winner, returns as a Chicago Best Contractor for the third straight year. The company holds a state license and teaches home inspection skills to clients receiving social services.

They also strive to incorporate eco-friendly information into their reports. "We don't want to just explain the defects, but how to optimize the home for the client," co-owner Dan Cullen says.

Real estate agent J. John Maggio of Burr Ridge says: "They're the most thorough inspectors I've ever used."

Hynek Construction | Morton Grove, Ill.

Owner Hynek Sedlacek worked for years constructing buildings in the Czech Republic, and honed his skills for 13 years in the U.S. before going into business himself, focusing on chimneys, mortar and tuck-pointing.

The licensed Chicago contractor, who received 14 Page of Happiness nominations in the last year, takes pride in doing things his own way as much as possible. "I use my own mix and my own technique for the mortar," Sedlacek says. "I like challenges, and I want to do work that's going to hold up for a very long time."

Bevan Brookfield of Evanston says Sedlacek lived up to his promise when he rebuilt a chimney and replaced 90-year-old steps and a walkway. "The finished job had no surprise extras and is the highest quality."
