Residents of the nation’s capital are in the midst of experiencing the statistically coldest month of the year.

According to Weather.com, January averages the coolest temperatures in Washington D.C. for the entire year, with lows reaching an average 29 degrees.

While snowfall is a common sight during Washington D.C. winters, residents should be aware it can affect more than their daily commute. Large amounts of snowfall accumulating on trees and branches can be dangerous, as the extra weight can cause limbs to break and fall.

Cynthia Kronz of highly rated Dad’s Tree Service in Springfield, Va., has helpful advice should you find yourself dealing with a fallen limb on your home, vehicle or property.

“First of all, take concern for immediate safety,” she says. “Stay clear of the affected area and call a licensed, fully insured tree service company. Do not manipulate the tree yourself.”

Kronz says the first call a homeowner should make in situations like this should be to a local tree service, as “crisis conditions” could prove challenging for quick response times.

“Then call the insurance company,” Kronz instructs. “Take pictures of the affected areas from a safe distance.”
