Edgewater Solar Panel Installation Articles
They provided options for 3 different sized systems and 3 different ways to pay for them - to buy the system outright, to prepay a 20-year lease, or to pay them monthly on a pay as I go basis. I ultimately decided to go with the medium sized (6.75kW) system they proposed and the prepaid 20-year lease. I built a spreadsheet model for the cashflows and the smallest system (4.5kW) was going to be the biggest bang for my buck - over a 17% implied annualized return on my investment assuming no residual value for the system in 20 years - but I was still getting an incremental 10% implied return on the additional panels as I moved from the 4.5kW to the 6.75kW system. The additional savings from going from the 6.75kW system to the largest system they proposed was very marginal and only would have made since if I was expecting my electricity usage to be going up. The return on my investment in the medium sized (6.75kw) system will be around 15% and since I pay my PG&E bills on an after tax basis that's effectively a 15% TAX FREE RETURN which I'm not getting anywhere close to on any of my other investments.
I went with the prepaid lease for a couple reasons. The pay as you go lease had an effective financing rate of close to 10% and would have really only made sense if I didn't have the money to put up front or didn't have the ability to borrow money via a home equity line of credit or equivalent.
In terms of the actual installation, the only complaint I have is the amount of time that it took between when I put my $1,000 deposit down and when work actually began.
