"The sales rep was polite and knowledgeable. Of course, she tried to sell add-ons that we didn't feel were needed, but that's her job so no problem. Installed" was great; gave thorough instructions on using the control panel.

"They showed up on time and he was cordial and made sure to walk me through what he was saying. From the begging he was clear that the offer I had signed up for only" had a few sensors and that if I wanted to wire thoroughly it would be more cost. It was disappointing on the price jump but I was expecting it based on previous experiences with alarm companies. By the time he left everything was working and it has continued working since. He also installed a smoke detector and a CO detector.

How Much Does it Cost to Install a Home Security System?

Securing your home is important, but how much does it cost install a security system?

10 Questions to Ask Your Home Security Provider

The security of your home is important. Ask these questions before you make a hire.

burglary burglar crowbar
, Alarms

You return home from work to find your door forced open. "Surely not a burglary!" you exclaim to yourself.

adjusting a hardwired smoke detector
Alarms, , Electrical

Dear Angie: How often do I need to replace my hard-wired smoke detectors? And who should I hire to do this? Our 15-year-old system has five detectors. A few are chirping, and it doesn’t stop even when we replace the batteries. – Michael G., Benbrook, Texas

Driveway alarm wireless
Driveways - Asphalt, Driveways - Concrete, Alarms

Wireless systems are easy to install, but wired systems offer more flexibility.

lock on door
Locksmiths, Alarms

In considering residential security improvements, most people think in terms of locks and alarms.

Angie's Answers

?
I second the original question (still unanswered). Speaking as someone who logged in today to try to find an attorney, I see this category as one that's exactly what I have my Angie's List membership for:

1. It's important that I find a good one
2. I'm not an expert enough to know myself who is a good one
3. The industry is full of advertisements and misinformation
4. I wish I knew what experiences other people have had

?
I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

?
I'm not sure Angie et. al. want you to have a complete answer to this question. By re-subscribing at the Indiana State Fair in 2012, I think I paid $20.00 per year for a multi- year subscription. Maybe even less. At the other extreme--and I hope my memory isn't faulty about this--I think the price, for my area, for ONE year was an outrageous $70.00. And they debited me automatically without warning. I had to opt out of that automatic charge. I like Angie's List, but if some of the companies they monitor behaved the way they do in this respect, they'd be on some sort of Pages of Unhappiness. I'll be interested to see if this comment gets published or censored out of existence.

That's very difficult to answer without seeing the house. As one poster said, the prep is the most important part. On newer homes that don't have a lot of peeling paint, the prep can be very minimal even as low as a couple or a few hundred dollars for the prep labor.

On a 100 year old home with 12 coats of peeling paint on it, then the prep costs can be very high and can easily exceed 50% of the job's labor cost.

A 2100 sq ft two story home could easily cost $1000 just for the labor to prep for the paint job. That number could climb too. Throw in lots of caullking  or window glazing, and you could be talking a couple or a few hundred dollars more for labor.

Painting that home with one coat of paint and a different color on the trim could run roughly $1000 or more just for labor. Add a second coat  and that could cost close to another $1000 for labor.

For paint, you may need 20 gallons of paint. You can pay from $30-$70 for a gallon of good quality exterior paint. The manufacturer of the paint should be specified in any painting contract. Otherwise, the contractor could bid at a Sherwin-Williams $60 per gallon paint and then paint the house with $35 Valspar and pocket the difference. $25 dollars per gallon times 20 gallons? That's a pretty penny too.

That was the long answer to your question. The short answer is $2000 to $4000 and up, depending upon the amount of prep, the number of coats, the amount of trim, and the paint used.

You have to put your self in the shoes of a business that is in business to turn a profit of some sort. All businesses have different overhead which in turn decides what their bottom line would be on their services. I personally would not go with an unlicensed professional for this type of install. You are messing with gas, venting issues, electrical wiring{electric water heater} and updated code issues such as a drain pan and tempature and relief drain lines for heaters that currently do not have them. I do agree that there are some companies that are way out of line for their installs but most of these companies are the really big companies that have very high overheads  I would assume. Tank type water heaters have changed over the last several years and with these safety changes come bigger prices. The price of steel thanks to China is skyrocketing and tank type water heaters are made of steel. Most wholesale plumbing supply companies cannot match what the big box stores are selling at retail to consumers. I happen to think from research that heaters such as Rheem, Bradford White and AOSmith who have been in business forever make a better product than what you can buy in the big box outlets. You also have to take in consideration the location of the water heater that is being replaced. Is it in the house, basement, garage or attic. Most 40 and 50 gallon water heaters that are purchased in a plumbing wholesale store in Texas cost between 300-340 for a 6 year warranty heater with 6 year on parts and tank. Speaking of warranty. Most big box companies will take a least 24 hours to a week to get your warranty problem taken care of. Most reputable plumbing companies will give same day service if they installed the heater.

So lets break down a typical install at cost to a licensed plumber in Texas

Heater: $315, water shut off $6.50, water flex lines or unions to code $20, gas flex line and cut off to code $12, misc fittings $15, Total $368.50 Lets add a 35% profit which is some what low  for a business $129, Total 497.50

This doesnt  include permits, pan and drain or any venting issues. The vent must go from the heater to the outside of roof using double wall vent.

Cost of permit on average $60

Most plumbing companies allow for 3 hours of time for a water heater. This includes picking the new one up. Delivering out to house. Draining and removing old water heater. Hauling off old heater. Installing new heater up to code. Going down to city and pulling permit.

Average Labor charges for heater installs $400

That would make this install run without extras on any code issues $957.50

I just had a 50 gallon gas water heater installed in my house for $1200 but I needed a pan installed. I used a licensed plumber.

Todd said it best.

An itemized list / cost breakdown, more often than not is used against the contractor when it is shared with other builders who will then beat it.

Good contractors use good people, and good people cost more.  Just the cost of having the appropriate insurance / bond can be the difference between winning a job or losing it ot a 'lower bid'.

It is the rule of three; there is Good, Cheap and Fast.  You can have any two:  Good and Cheap, won't be Fast; Good and Fast, won't be Cheap;  Cheap and Fast, won't be Good!

When comparing bids, it isn't the cheapest or the 'nicest' person you should select.   You should understand why there is a large price difference (it shows there are gaps in your design program or what you have asked for specifically, which means there may be arguments later).  If most of the bids are in line, and one is way high or way low,  you want to know why before dismissing or selecting them.

A price-only decision almost always costs more in the long run.

Good luck!

They sent the equipment via the mail, with instructions. It is a self-installed system, and it was
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
to install. They offer online account tracking which is nice, as well as the ability to monitor your system remotely.
About a year or so after using the system I kept getting error messages that communication with the dispatch center was lost.
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
sent me out a different circuit board that was supposed to have stronger wi-fi capabilities (the one I had was from AT&T I believe, and they sent me a replacement which was through Verizon). It required that I replace a little circuit board inside the home base module. It was relatively easy, but I did have to pay close attention to get one of the connections right. This seems to have resolved the issue.
I will say that overall the system has functioned well and
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
offers very good customer service. They don't have all of the features as the ADT system that I used to have, such as: 1) The buttons on the keypad are very small and 2) are not backlit, so you can't see in the dark. They do provide with the system a little remote/key fob that you can use to turn the system on and off, so there is a work around, and is a nice option, but also something else to keep up with. 3) The other thing that was nice about the ADT system was that there were lights on the motion detector that would light up when you passed in front of it, which told you that it was working. To test the
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
motion detector you have to push a button on top of the sensor, which is very inconvenient because the sensor is positioned high up on the wall for best function.
The price continues to be $14.99/month for basic monitoring, which is fantastic!

The Installation was quick and professional. Here is the problem: I have used
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
in various buildings over the past 30 years. What is not immediately obvious is that
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
competes against itself. There is no one
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
, there are apparent franchises and the main operation. You must always ascertain which
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
you are dealing with. The next problem with
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
is that their modus operandi seems to be to give you a price for monthly service and then 6 to 9 months down the road, they tell you the price is going up, usually only by a small amount, so small that you might be inclined to just shrug it off. don't do it. Call and cancel. They will immediately revert to the original price.

I have no issues with the actual security system
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
(originally APX) installed in my home in 2010. The system itself is excellent. However, if something goes wrong with the system that requires a Tech to be sent to my home,
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
is beyond lacking. The first available Tech could be scheduled for October 6. Over a month away and without home security for that month as the issue prevented me from arming my system. After lengthy phone conversations, I discovered that
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
has no physical presence in Chattanooga. The Tech must come from either Nashville or Atlanta and the Tech would have to be sent outside of normal business hours because it required travel time expense and overtime and a Tech would select that assignment because of the overtime he would receive. When I pointed out I could have a different company install home security long before October 6. They pointed out that this would be a breach of my two year contract and would result in a penalty. Vivent was not willing to acknowledge that I contracted with them to provide home security and not being able to provide that for over a month was in itself a breach of the contract on their part. Unless and until Vivent sets up some sort of Tech support in Chattanooga, I would avoid allowing them to be your home security provider in spite of how good the system is.

To say it didn't go well would be an understatement!
First of all
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
did a good job installing the central distribution center and hardwiring our computers back to that distribution center - although he stupidly installed our Comcast modem in such a location that we can't get to it without a ladder and it's impossible to "reset" the modem without unplugging it.
When it came to the second part of our request he completely failed. Unfortunately he terminated the cable and internet cables directly behind the TVs. By wiring it this way we actually ended up requiring 2 extra cords visible below the TVs since the cable and internet cords had to be routed down to the Comcast box.
I'll be honest I don't really have a problem with an installation not going well - but I do expect the problem to be correct. Instead
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
was insulting to my wife - shouting at her over the phone. And he has refused to fix the problem. Now we'll have to hire someone else to fix his mess.
Ironically we've used
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
as our alarm monitoring company for years. In fact we've paid them over $1,200 in monitoring fees over the years. We are now moving our monitoring to another company. I would not recommend them to anyone. The unprofessional way we were handled was completely unacceptable.

Each time I called
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
, he responded to my requests for service - also volunteered to purchase the materials I wanted. He estimated the time so I was aware of labor costs. Everything he did for me works very well - I am so pleased with hood & security lights. I chose hood & lights -
Clermont Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
picked them up - plus sensors, ballast, & other parts.

Put in a nice modern system that is working well.
Some of the big brand names advertise systems that sound like a bargain, until
you see how little is included. I had a system from one of those names in my previous
house, and when you called them the automated phone system (press 1 if ...
etc.) was so convoluted and tortuous that I wondered what would happen if I
needed quick help. With the monitoring company for the present system you get a
live human directly. The price was in line with another local security system
company.
