"They did an excellent Job! The wall paper was difficult to get off but they never complained. Did a great job preparing the walls. Their attention to detail and" their painting was beautiful. In addition, they were such nice folks. Hard workers, responsible, experts at their craft and delightful! I will be happy to use them for all my painting...inside and out. I also understand that there are those on their team that have talents wider than our scope. So check out what else they can do. Thanks

Remodeling tip: Should painting or flooring come first?

Angie Hicks responds to a member who wants to know whether interior painting should come before or after the installation of hardwood flooring.

Interior Painting

Professional decorators say painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to dramatically change the look of a room. It's also one of the more accessible do-it-yourself projects for the homeowner, though a professional interior painting company will likely do a better and more long-lasting job.

Angie's Answers

?

That's very difficult to answer without seeing the house. As one poster said, the prep is the most important part. On newer homes that don't have a lot of peeling paint, the prep can be very minimal even as low as a couple or a few hundred dollars for the prep labor.

On a 100 year old home with 12 coats of peeling paint on it, then the prep costs can be very high and can easily exceed 50% of the job's labor cost.

A 2100 sq ft two story home could easily cost $1000 just for the labor to prep for the paint job. That number could climb too. Throw in lots of caullking  or window glazing, and you could be talking a couple or a few hundred dollars more for labor.

Painting that home with one coat of paint and a different color on the trim could run roughly $1000 or more just for labor. Add a second coat  and that could cost close to another $1000 for labor.

For paint, you may need 20 gallons of paint. You can pay from $30-$70 for a gallon of good quality exterior paint. The manufacturer of the paint should be specified in any painting contract. Otherwise, the contractor could bid at a Sherwin-Williams $60 per gallon paint and then paint the house with $35 Valspar and pocket the difference. $25 dollars per gallon times 20 gallons? That's a pretty penny too.

That was the long answer to your question. The short answer is $2000 to $4000 and up, depending upon the amount of prep, the number of coats, the amount of trim, and the paint used.

?
Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
?
This is a good question.  However, the question makes the assumption that there is a paint that covers everything in 1 coat, which I don't believe is the case.  My recommendation is Benjamin Moore's Aura.  Now the fine print.  Aura will cover very well because it dries to approximately twice the thickness of other paints.  However, Aura says it will cover any color in never more than 2 coats, but there are exceptions to that as well, including some deep reds.  The main thing is the color change.  If the color you are using is within the same family of colors, you have a chance, we've also had pretty good success of grey covering over tan in 1 coat, but if you're making a major color change, don't expect any paint to cover perfectly in 1 coat.

Some other 1 coat coverage paints you could use would be Sherwin Williams Duration, and Behr Ultra Premium Plus.

Hope this helps!

Remember, you not only have to remove the popcorn texture, but also redo the ceiling in some other texture.

Price will depend on several factors:

1) how much the contractor you choose hates removing popcorn or textured ceilings - some charge $1 or so/SF extra just because they hate it. There are even some who bid total drywall replacement cheaper than removing the popcorn, so you have to first find contractors who are happy to do that work, or your prices will be out of the realistic range

2) if the popcorn predates about 1990, then it could likely have asbestos in it, which doubles or triples the price, and in many cases uncapsulating it with a spray coating and then removing the drywall entirely is actually cheaper than all the protective measures necessary if it is scraped off.

3) whether the popcorn is primarily gypsum and vermiculite (comes off REAL easy) or was the plaster of paris variety, which takes a fair amount of soaking to soften it enough to scrape off

4) what type of finish you are replacing it with - if a textured ceiling, slapcoat, knockdown finish or paneling, not real problem. If you want to go with a perfectly smooth ceiling (generally a bad idea as any variations in the drywall on a ceiling surface really shows up dramatically), then it will demand a lot of care in preparing the scraped surface, and a complete surface drywall compound skim coat to smooth out the scrapes and gouges from the removal process.

5) what underlying conditions are - if there is a lot of furniture to move around (should go to adjacent rooms) or cover and work around, high-quality rug or hardwood floor to super-protect or such, will drive cost up.

I have seen costs run from as low as $0.60/SF to $1.25/SF (for removal only). Generally, remove and recoat with a surface texture of some kind (anything but smooth) and paint will run you about $2.50-3.50/SF.

Now the bad news - if asbestos containing, can run from $5-10/SF. Many homeowners in that situation go the other legal route - have it encapsulated with an asbestos-rated sealant by an asbestos contractor, then paint it and leave it for the next homeowner to decide what to do about it. Some contractors encapsulate it and then put a 1/4" thick drywall layer over it - this usually looks like a disaster unless it has a VERY rough textured finish on it, because putting drywall sheet over a rough surface like popcorn invariably means a wavy surface commonly looks like a gently rolling ocean surface.

?
Without seeing the project I'm not sure exactly what is happening.  HOWEVER, I've never heard of someone "floating" over paint blisters - just logically that can't work.  If air or moisture are trapped (because that's what causes blisters) painting over them won't fix the initial problem.

I have a couple suggestions - My first would have been to contact the paint manufacturer - whether it's sherwin williams, benjamin moore, behr, etc. to see if they would send a rep out to give their recommendation.  We have done this before starting a project to get the best possible recommendation for work to be done and have found them to be very helpful in diagnosing what is currently going on and the best way to fix it.

If that doesn't work, I would call either the better business bureau or maybe the local paper if your contractor isn't willing to work through the problem with you.  Also, If your contractor warrantied the work I might re-read that to see what they cover if anything.

My guess is that there will have to be some sort of dispute resolution process.

Hope this helps!

Started out great. We prepared for paint by removing all furniture on the first floor.

covered all newly installed hardwood. In the dining room
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
took his time, prepared the surfaces appropriately, caulked and primed surfaces and applied paint to casing by hand. (one bay window, 2 door casings) He failed to cover glass in windows, required my time to removed and clean windows. He did not paint any base trim as new material purchased. He continued to the Living Room and again took his time painting casing (one bay window, one door casing). He brought in two other individuals to paint walls and ceilings. I do not care for a
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
in my paint, he selected and applied a semi gloss paint to a room not used very often. Not all drywall repair was performed. Took 4 days to paint one room. However they covered the handles to the bay window, they removed the finish from the handles leaving uneven and ugly finish, some bare metal, some paint. Will require refinishing.

then moved to the den. He felt hand application too slow and opted to spray. The product he used, Breakthrough by PPG does not cover without hand application of primer (per PPG rep who inspected work). He sprayed. Coverage spotty. Does not compare to quality of work in dining room. On bookcases, color selected by decorator.
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
did not feel enough contrast. I advised, not important. Too much other painting to be completed. He repainted darker color using a discontinued product. Looked awful. I purchased original color and repainted twice to cover dark color. He took the doors to the den cabinet and bath cabinet to shop to spray and returned within 2 days. After consultation with a decorator, it was determined that the hall bath did not require painting.
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
was advised. He proceeded to spray trim on casing in bath. Then he painted bath. He failed to tape walls or prime prior to painting, so now from the front door, you see the shine from the trim through the wall paint. He proceeded to great room and again sprayed. He did cover walls this time. His helpers did not return, he told me they were painting their mothers home for Thanksgiving. Then
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
began to show up after 10:00am, leaving after 2 hours. He did not show up at all some days. The day before Thanksgiving, he removed my kitchen, laundy, bar and 1/2 bath cabinet doors purported to paint on Friday for return on Monday. I complained about the length of time the work was taking (he stopped work on my home to paint an empty home...so they could hang cabinets) He knew I had live with all the furniture from the first floor of my home upstairs or in the basement since
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
. He was aware I wanted work completed by Thanksgiving. He kept starting more work, but not finishing prior work. He started on the front door without permission using an unknown product. It is at least 3 different shades, all too dark. A solid oak door now looks like it was poorly faux painted and then set on fire. When he started on kitchen cabinets he did not cover the new granite or the new backsplash. Much clean up required. They were not careful. The cabinets were not deglossed. Sanding minimal. He texted me we needed to talk, I texted him he need to finish the work for which he had been paid. He should start no new areas. I asked for the return of my doors. He failed to return. Sherriff contacted. When he did return the doors, they had not been deglossed, sanded or primed. Paint simply sprayed on some of them, but not all. Paint chipping. Some paint applied too thickly. The doors were not rehung, simply piled in the great room. He told me I needed to pay an additional $1,500 or he would not leave. He was bullying and badgering, frightening me. I asked him to leave. He refused. I called the Sherriff. He removed his things, including the paint for which I had already paid. While I remained on the phone with 911 he came back in the house. I couldn't lock the door as he had damaged the locking mechanism. He continued through my home as I screamed for him to leave. In summary, I paid in advance for work not completed. Additional damages incurred. I was left with a mess. I felt as if I had say in any decisions regarding my home. PPG rep called in to confirm application errors.

The painting services on Angie's was a special price offer using only the computer . To get the offer price you have to prepay and then the business gives you a call and schedules the appointment. The fee is charged on the credit card. Never will I do that again without talking to the individual first. An appoiment was scheduled for 2/27....More />

, told me he would call me the night before the 2/27 appointment (2/26) to give me a time of arrival. No call was received so I placed a call to
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
at 8pm on 2/26.
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
seemed very surprised and confused that I had a prepaid job scheduled for the next day 2/27. After a few minutes he asked for my address. I asked if he had my information. He did not have my name, address etc. but said he would be at my home between 7:45 & 8 the next morning. I asked if two painters were coming and he said only he would be coming. I explained the prepaid special was for two painters , for 4 hours . He did not respond. In the morning at 7:30 am, two men come. The younger man is in charge. It was obvious the older gentleman painter is non English speaking and is not an experienced painter. The other man in charge gave him instructions. Sometimes yelling at him. The experienced painter took the Master Bath walls. The experienced painter gave the other older painter instructions prior to him starting to work and he was assigned the newly installed back door & frame with a 75% glass insert. He started on the outside of the door frame and painted the frame the wrong color , grey when it is suppose to be white. The prep taping on the door was horrendous and it did not cover the door hardware, glass and the dark wall next to the door was splattered with white paint. The white plastic frame around the glass was also painted with the latex paint which came off in sheets when the tape was removed. This painter also removed all of the recently installed specialty weather stripping around the inside frame and did not replace it properly leaving bulges and gaps and destroying it.
The master bath painting was poor and the prep taping was done incorrectly. The wall paint near the
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
of the baseboards was ripped away when the tape and plastic covering the carpet was removed after the job . I would never use

services again. I have spent two days trying to make this paint job look decent.

I contacted
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
through the Angie's List Web Site. He contacted us promptly, set up a convenient appointment, gave us a prompt estimate, helped us a little in color choice, came back with color samples, set an appointment to do the job, arrived on time and completed the job in one day. Price seemed reasonable. Entire interaction was professional. Room looks great. I would definitely use him again for a similar project.

I am very pleased with the paint job that was completed by
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
. I had my kitchen, ceiling, and leveler door painted. They were very responsive as soon as I placed my order in through Angie’s List to make an appointment. They were on time, very personable, and their rates were reasonable. I am very particular in how things are done, and I am very happy with the results of the paint job. As they said, they like to do the job right the first time. It shows, as their work is excellent. I will use them again when the need arises for painting.

Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
were such a pleasure to welcome them into my home.
Wilton Interior Painters Provider Name Locked
refinished our 35 year old oak hardwood floors...and his crew were the best! They vacuumed their way out of the house when they were done...and Cristhian...he painted our raised panel bedroom...alot of hard work...he did a PERFECT job. So good, that I have asked them to come back and do more. HIGHLY recommend them both.
Found myself hugging them...they were above and beyond. Thank you!
I am keeping them as my 'go to' for future work. So grateful to have found them.

Quallity of painting - excellent.
Very professional. Very courteous. Tries very hard to please.. will go the extra mile. For example, he gave me 4 hours of labor on an initial contract that was supposed to cover 3 hours. Another example -- they put on a second coat on doors and trim, when that had not been included in the original price.
I started with a 3 hour contract and then had them come back for a larger job. They cleaned up the job site very nicely. They made a special trip to get new plates to cover electrical outlets and switches, and obtained several different versions so that I could choose which one I wanted. They did that on their own time.
Very good prep work with excellent caulking.
