"Attention to detail was phenomenal. we've experienced 2 very cold winter seasons and continue to be amazed at our reduced fuel consumption compared to prior" homes. It is truly a home that feels like a work of art. We continue to receive compliments from strangers that stop in our yard to ask for details. Our friends are always impressed with this wonderful home that is a joy to entertain in. Top quality construction using only the best building materials.

" has been a huge help to us. Project is that of of remodeling bathrooms in connection with an update of the plumbing" of our old house. responded rapidly to our request for help. She provided loads of information about the plans-permit-building process, and she promptly provided us with several different possible plans for reconstituting the bathrooms. She adjusted her schedule to work with our timing, and once we had her plans, she made herself available, on our schedule, to walk us through them. She thought of things we hadn’t thought of, and knew relevant things we hadn’t known. She was able to show us a way of remodeling the bathrooms that would optimize their usefulness and their value to us and to future buyers of our house. She put things in a form that we could then show the builder, and get feedback from him on what the various possible plans would cost. She knew about the relevant codes, she had valuable common-sense input about some of the choices (tub/ shower..) She was very , very responsive, and very knowledgeable. We recommend her highly!

Assuming this is new single family residential

makes the answer more simple.

Small towns = small fees and ability to trunkate the voulme of plans required to insure a good job.  It's from this perspective I'll attempt to corral these wild horses, answers architect have given prior.

Always attempt to get a by-the-hour rate, never a $/sf - they know how to play the game better than you in the latter and the former honesty is guaranteed by their state license board.

Never accept draftsmen to be placed in charge of your project, regardless of architect, engineer, surveyor, etc. even though rates may be charged lower, the product quality is even less than these charges with plenty of errors/omissions/oversights in planning when the licensed overseeer gets busy on other projects.

If you like the projects produced, obtain favorable references, then the hourly rate should be $60-120/hr small town.  No, you don't associate cost vs quality.  Look at overhead, employees ... if pronounced, then your fees go to pay for all these = less money/time devoted to your project.

was excellent to work with. He was extremely responsive, and knowledgeable of the codes and regs. He was very creative in addressing some of the challenges that we presented him with. This was a promo deal for two hours of home design consulting. It was
structured so that we could buy two units for a total of four hours of
design work. The scheduling was awkward. He asked if he could bring his
child which I agreed to. He spent a total of about one hours at our home
and was constantly distracted by the kid. ...More He had to leave early and was
going to follow up and reschedule more time. He never did. As it turns
out, this was really just a sales pitch for a full remodel. We were not
Note that the service date is a guess. It's been a while and I was avoiding this review.
