"We had them come out to do a chimney sweep after another company told us they couldn't do it because our chimney would collapse and require thousands of dollars of repairs.
" and masonry did the sweep and did not try and sell us on multiple different services or add ons.

"We had been burning wood in our energy efficient fireplace since Oct. 2010 and figured it was time to get the chimney cleaned.
said that there was a bit of" soot, but no creosote(causes fires). So, I guess we don't need to have this done as often as recommended. We will probably wait 6 years before we hire him again.

"We asked several companies for an estimate on replacing missing shingles and repairing leaks around
on our older roof. Of those that provided estimates, bids" ranged from $500.00 to $1,500. This company was prompt and professional with their response, and their bid was among the lower ones. Because we are considering a complete tear-off next spring, we only needed the repairs to get us through the winter. It was a tough decision to select a company not only based on cost but availability to do the work. They were prompt in making an estimate and after accepting their bid, we agreed they would come on Saturday, but they were actually able to come Friday afternoon so I had the weekend free to do other things. They were easy to talk with and discuss what they were doing and why. The work seems to be done correctly. Of course time will tell. But as of right now, I am satisfied.

Chimneys

If you have a wood-burning fireplace, be sure to have it cleaned and inspected regularly to reduce the risk of fire. But be careful who you hire because chimney-repair scams are common.

How to avoid chimney repair scams

These scams lure homeowners via phone solicitations, door-to-door sales pitches or ads offering too-good-to-be-true prices.

Regular chimney inspection and cleaning helps prevent fires from creosote buildup and saves money on repairs. Here’s a look at what’s involved and the costs.

Chimneys, fireplaces and vents need to be inspected at least once per year. Even an unused chimney needs to be checked for possible animal nests or damage.

Most all professional chimney sweeps now utilize the National Fire Protection  211 Standard for chimneys, fireplaces , Vents and solid fuel-burning appliances for chimney inspections, which determines when and whether he has to access the roof.

There are 3 levels of inspection  The most commonly performed are Level 1 and level 2  are listed:

Level 1            Done as Annual Inspection

                      Routine cleaning of the flue

Direct replacement of a similar appliance

Level 1 inspection is recommended for a chimney under continued service under the same conditions with the continued use of the same appliance.

IN A Level 1 inspection, your chimney service tech should examine the *READILY ACCESSIBLE portions of the appliance and the chimney connection. HE will be looking for basic Soundness of the chimney structure and flue as well as the basic appliance installations and connections. HE will also Verify that  the chimney is free of obstruction and combustible deposits.

* Readily accessible Means that no special equipment is required to gain such access, ie.Ladder

LEVEL 2            Upon sale or transfer of a property

After an operating malfunction or an external event is likely to have caused damage to the chimney

Addition or removal of one or more connected appliances, or the replacement of an appliance withone of a different type, a different input rting or a different efficiency.

Prior to relining or replacement of the flue lining

Level 2 insp. are required when any changes are made to the system. Changes can include a change of Fuel Type, changes in shape or material in the flue,Replacement or addition of an appliance of a disimilar type, input rating or efficiency. Building fires, chimney fire or other seismic events as well as weather events or obvious construction defects would be indicators that a level 2 is warranted.

Level 2 includes everything in a level 1 PLUS the *Accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior including attic, crawl spaces and basements. it addresses proper clearances from combustible in accessible locations. There are no speciality tools required to open or access doors, panels, or coverings during a level 2 insp.  The level 2  insp should also include the visual inspection by video scanning equipment or by other means in order to examine the internaql surfaces and joints of all the flue liners inside the chimney structure. No removal or demolition or any permrnantely attached portions of the chimney or building structure or finish shall be required in a level 2 insp.

*ACCESSIBLE means if you can get to it with special equipment do it but you dont have to take apart anything for said access. Use of ladders and cameras just no demolition.

LEVEL 3  SEE NFPA 211 STANDARD FOR DETAILS

***THE REAL ANSWER to this question lies with the accessibility of the top of the chimney and roof type.  Most professional sweeps want to examine up close the top of the chimney for cracked masonry crowns , which is very common, Flashing issues, top view down flue, and for prefab chimneys to insp the condition of the Chase cover and cap.

Note that the use of a special tool (ladder) to gain access to the chimney is under a level 2 inspection, which can be additional costs since it is a much more thorough inspection.

It is possible to sweep and do a level 1 insp. without accessing the roof.

Also most professional sweeps have equipment that allows us to sweep the chimney with a rotary system that is operated from inside at the fireplace opening and achieve a much better cleaning than pushing brushes down from the top and without getting on the roof. We also video scan the flue from the hearth so the homeowner can be a part of that inspection or "chimney-oscopy". They see the live action of the top of the chimney and conditions that exist inside their system so when they get their report they know they are not some stock pics that could be used to sell repairs but the actual pics of the conditions they viewed in their system. And we do not have to access the roof.

If the chimney access requires multiple ladders or is a "brush with death", there could be extra cost, and the sweep would make an onsite decision regarding the ability to safely reach the top of the chimney or have to use a lesser option of binoculars or rely on experience to determine whats going on up top based on visible symptoms,  if access is too dangerous or not possible.

So don't discount a sweeps knowledge or ability on whether he gets on the roof or not. Check him out on referral sites , company web site, credentials, training and experience. Get referals and check on liability insurance and you should be able to find a sweep that can meet your need. If you are in North Carolina check us out at ClassicChimney.com. They inspected the chimney and cleaned the inside with brooms. It still has a smell to it and I feel it was not a thorough cleaning. I know other companies use power tools with wire brushes on the end. Next time I will use one of those contractors to ensure a deep cleaning is conducted. It was only $125. So I at least got an inspection for that price an a light cleaning.

Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
is great. Very helpful and courteous. He even pointed out other services that needed to be performed on the house to ready it for winter (not add ons to his service; things he noticed about my house unrelated to the chimney - so he was helpful beyond just the green that was going into his pocket.) Answers questions in a very personable way.

The entire experience went very well. There was a slight hiccup in scheduling and

came unassisted (his usual co-worker was ill) & did all work himself, having to circulate between roof & basement to get various tasks done, but was finished in a comfortable 2-2.5 hours. He explained very clearly (& wrote out on his bill) exactly what was done.
I am very impressed by
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
's professionalism, apart from the work itself: from his prompt, clear & detailed price estimate to the fact that he called in twice while detained on the day of the job. His manner in all cases was friendly, accessible, unhurried, & lucid.
I was also impressed by this: When I explained some of the options that another company wanted to perform along with the essential liner/chimney cap work,
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
explained why he felt that these were superfluous (from my viewpoint, a positive thing for not adding to cost).
Finally, relative to the price estimate I got from the other company,
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
's price seemed very reasonable.

I have my chimney inspected annually, since I have a wood
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
and regularly heat my home with it. I made an appointment with
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
, and
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
showed up on time. He was very professional. He looked at the chimney and said it needed to be swept, so he and his partner cleaned it out. They were thorough, and
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
showed me the black gunk that they scraped off. They had put down drop cloths around the living area, and cleaned up thoroughly.
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
then showed me a photo of my chimney crown, which was cracked in more than one place. He proposed replacing the crown and also waterproofing the chimney. I agreed to do it, although I hesitated over whether to waterproof--I had never heard of doing that before, but I found a few recommendations for doing it when I researched online. So, I made an appointment for crown replacement--a cast crown--and waterproofing. Again, the job was done on time, I was shown a photo of the new crown, and everything was handled professionally.
I liked that
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
showed me photos so I could see what was going on without having to go up on the roof to see it (although I suppose they could have been fake photos, I actually doubt that). The
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
staff were all professional and a pleasure to work with. I would call them again.

The provider is punctual, very helpful, and a joy to work with. They did an excellent job just as they did last year fixing the cracking chimney crown, chimney sweep, and replacing the chimney caps.
The price was more expensive than I would expect. The tuckpointing as well as cementing some areas with holes only took them 30 minutes to do and there was no product involved yet the price of this work (without the chimney sweep) was $1180. Rather expensive for 30 minutes of work.

After scheduling an appointment several weeks in advance, the provider was to come in to give a quote on installation of a stainless steel chimney liner. Appoint was scheduled for "the morning." First call to confirm 30 minutes before arrival came at 10:53a. At 11:13a, the second call came to say they would be delayed due to traffic. At 1:07p, they called to say they just couldn't make it.
The professional thing to do would have been to say they could not accommodate the job at least the day before. I advise anyone considering this company to proceed with caution.
