"We were in escrow on a historical property with a fireplace the owner had made to look "workable." We hired
to perform an inspection" on the chimney and fireplace. The technician did a great job of inspecting the chimney and found several issues that would have made the fireplace dangerous to use, one of the most important being most of the chimney's top had been removed above the roof. Since we were
the end of our inspection period, the company went above and beyond to provide us with a report over the weekend so that we could present it in our request for repairs. Due to several issues with the house found during inspection, we ultimately walked from the property, but we really appreciate the service that
provided us and will definitely use them again.

-Allegra N.

"I've been using
since I've owned the house & the previous owners used him as well. I've always had great experiences" with their services and this time was no different. Hey is always on time & keeps the house very clean. His prices are reasonable and our fireplace has been running great since we've owned the home. We use it for heat during the winter months and it's never let us down. Highly recommended.

How to Avoid Chimney Repair Scams

Scams lure homeowners via solicitations, door-to-door sales pitches and ads offering too-good-to-be-true prices.

If you have a wood-burning fireplace, be sure to have it cleaned and inspected regularly to reduce the risk of fire. But be careful who you hire because chimney-repair scams are common.

Industry experts recommend an annual inspection and cleaning as needed, generally every year or two depending on how much use the fireplace gets.

Keep your chimney in tip-top shape with this advice from highly rated chimney sweeps.

Angie's Answers

Most all professional chimney sweeps now utilize the National Fire Protection  211 Standard for chimneys, fireplaces , Vents and solid fuel-burning appliances for chimney inspections, which determines when and whether he has to access the roof.

There are 3 levels of inspection  The most commonly performed are Level 1 and level 2  are listed:

Level 1            Done as Annual Inspection

                      Routine cleaning of the flue

Direct replacement of a similar appliance

Level 1 inspection is recommended for a chimney under continued service under the same conditions with the continued use of the same appliance.

IN A Level 1 inspection, your chimney service tech should examine the *READILY ACCESSIBLE portions of the appliance and the chimney connection. HE will be looking for basic Soundness of the chimney structure and flue as well as the basic appliance installations and connections. HE will also Verify that  the chimney is free of obstruction and combustible deposits.

* Readily accessible Means that no special equipment is required to gain such access, ie.Ladder

LEVEL 2            Upon sale or transfer of a property

After an operating malfunction or an external event is likely to have caused damage to the chimney

Addition or removal of one or more connected appliances, or the replacement of an appliance withone of a different type, a different input rting or a different efficiency.

Prior to relining or replacement of the flue lining

Level 2 insp. are required when any changes are made to the system. Changes can include a change of Fuel Type, changes in shape or material in the flue,Replacement or addition of an appliance of a disimilar type, input rating or efficiency. Building fires, chimney fire or other seismic events as well as weather events or obvious construction defects would be indicators that a level 2 is warranted.

Level 2 includes everything in a level 1 PLUS the *Accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior including attic, crawl spaces and basements. it addresses proper clearances from combustible in accessible locations. There are no speciality tools required to open or access doors, panels, or coverings during a level 2 insp.  The level 2  insp should also include the visual inspection by video scanning equipment or by other means in order to examine the internaql surfaces and joints of all the flue liners inside the chimney structure. No removal or demolition or any permrnantely attached portions of the chimney or building structure or finish shall be required in a level 2 insp.

*ACCESSIBLE means if you can get to it with special equipment do it but you dont have to take apart anything for said access. Use of ladders and cameras just no demolition.

***THE REAL ANSWER to this question lies with the accessibility of the top of the chimney and roof type.  Most professional sweeps want to examine up close the top of the chimney for cracked masonry crowns , which is very common, Flashing issues, top view down flue, and for prefab chimneys to insp the condition of the Chase cover and cap.

Note that the use of a special tool (ladder) to gain access to the chimney is under a level 2 inspection, which can be additional costs since it is a much more thorough inspection.

It is possible to sweep and do a level 1 insp. without accessing the roof.

Also most professional sweeps have equipment that allows us to sweep the chimney with a rotary system that is operated from inside at the fireplace opening and achieve a much better cleaning than pushing brushes down from the top and without getting on the roof. We also video scan the flue from the hearth so the homeowner can be a part of that inspection or "chimney-oscopy". They see the live action of the top of the chimney and conditions that exist inside their system so when they get their report they know they are not some stock pics that could be used to sell repairs but the actual pics of the conditions they viewed in their system. And we do not have to access the roof.

If the chimney access requires multiple ladders or is a "brush with death", there could be extra cost, and the sweep would make an onsite decision regarding the ability to safely reach the top of the chimney or have to use a lesser option of binoculars or rely on experience to determine whats going on up top based on visible symptoms,  if access is too dangerous or not possible.

So don't discount a sweeps knowledge or ability on whether he gets on the roof or not. Check him out on referral sites , company web site, credentials, training and experience. Get referals and check on liability insurance and you should be able to find a sweep that can meet your need. If you are in North Carolina check us out at ClassicChimney.com. Perfect considering that the installation was on a building more than 150 years old and 4 stories high.

, his daughter,
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
and their team worked h****** a very hot day. They were efficient and professional. They didn't complain about the difficulty of maneuvering vehicles in Beacon Hill and they were on time. They took extreme care in trying to keep the house clean.
- Ellen T.

We booked the job in May and they came in in September due to weather.Quality of work and price was very reasonable. Quoted a 2 day job but took 5 days. The owner was very nice and always returned our phone calls. Just make sure you are very clear on the details of the work you want completed.
- Mary G.

Zandy showed up on time. Stated that the chimney would need a mason and that he did not do that. He does chimney liners and sweeps and chimney construction. He described the job to be done and recommended 2 masons that he trusts. They are not on Angie's list, but since he used the word "trust" I will call these masons he referred. There was no charge for the visit. Very pleasant and punctual and professional!

Derreck and TJ were phenomenal! They came out for certified inspections on three fireplaces. All three were in very bad shape. They walked me through a detailed explanation of each fireplace with the issues and took time to show me inside and out why it was an issue. The quote to repair was much higher than I expected but not because the services were overpriced (I had gotten a quote from another company and didn't feel nearly as comfortable with them). Both technicians performed the work the same day and did an extremely thorough job. They continually checked in with me to take time to explain and answer my questions. In addition they automatically scheduled a follow up inspection in two weeks just to ensure everything looks good.
I am completely confident that they are the right company and technicians for any job. I will never use or recommend anyone else.

Everyone at
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
has superlative customer service etiquette. I contacted them through Angie’s List (this was my first
time using Angie’s List) and it wasn’t long (less then 24 hours) before they reached out to me to make an appointment to have my fireplace cleaned and inspected. Although, I live outside of the usually service area for
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
they still honored my request because I had already purchased the service through Angie’s List.
The day of the appointment the technician (
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
) arrived promptly. He was very thorough and explained everything he was going to do during his visit. He cleaned the inside of my fireplace and climbed up on the roof to inspect for any concerns.
Afterwards, he discussed his findings with me and offered to send me a quote with several different options for some services I may want to consider for my fireplace. I received the quote (by email) within a day or two.
I appreciate good customer service, courtesy, and respect and I received that; not just from the technician but also from the lovely lady who scheduled my appointment. I am the kind of person who will pay a higher price for good customer service as opposed
to going to a cheaper company who would not appreciate my business.
I highly recommend their services. Thanks

- Carissa E.

This company was extremely professional and prompt. I explained the situation : I am trying to sell my home and the inspection report said work was necessary on the chimney. I had used
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
4 years earlier to clean the chimney. They came out, examined the chimney assessed whatever work was needed and called me immediately before doing any work and got my authorization. They did the work 1 day after I phoned them. Could not have asked for a more prompt and efficient experience.

(the owner) answered my original email to them on the same day I contacted them. He came out to the house a couple days later and gave me a quote. They came today to do the work. They were on time and worked all day to get the job done. My main concern was matching the original brick.
Parker Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
original assured me that the brick would match...and they do. I am so thrilled with the work that was done. I also want to mention that the two workers that were here all day were very professional and polite. I am so happy with the work I've already scheduled more brick work that needs to be done.
