"The service from start to finish was excellent. Bottom line the company in my estimation was amazing and really put forth an effort that you don't find from" most contractors. The technicians that came to our house worked incredibly hard to make sure we understood where our house could improve its energy efficiency and then when we decided to move forward with the insulation, the service and communication to us was so terrific. Our experience with contractors in general hasn't been the greatest mostly from a lack of communication. These guys acted more like a home services company with everything from being on time, incredibly polite and professional and the services they provided frankly were just excellent and REALLY REALLY made a difference.

"The short version is the following: they are an extremely nice, dedicated team of people. They really do care about what they do, your house, and the results/benefits" of these programs and the comfort it provides. I really never realized how bad my house was….but I had some temperature control issues (upstairs was 3 degrees colder consistently). While I cannot say that my issue is completely gone, what i can say is irrelevant of the zero degree weather we have been having, my house has NEVER been cold. The drafts are almost completely gone, and the "true feel" in the house is light years from what it was. You actually don't have the feeling of being a little hot to get comfortable, if that makes any sense. These old houses don't have insulations in the walls, so these guys are inherently limited with the overall and complete result. I am happy I spent the money on this, although in retrospect in my mind it should have been less, but that really means nothing. With the improvements, I am confident another company would not have done a better job, and really appreciated the cleanliness, courteousness and respect of the team. From their salesman to the workers to the PMs, they are a great run shop. Any questions or concerns you have will be taken extremely seriously. Too bad they didn't build my house for me 90 years ago.

Home Energy Audits

One thing homeowners can do to save on energy costs is to have a home energy audit conducted. This will reveal where drafts are entering from outdoors and where insulation is ineffective. Energy auditors can also recommend upgrades in appliances to save energy.

They gave us some good feedback on where the leakage was. It was a good deal and they were professional and nice. They were easy to work with and it was easy to schedule something with them. They were at the house for about 2 hours doing the job. They also emailed us the report afterwards. I would definitely recommend them to other people.

After arriving right on time, he went through the whole house inspecting windows, gaskets, HVAC, and various other items on his checklist. One drawback we encountered: as this house has a flat roof, he was unable to inspect the insulation situation because there is no attic. He said that is where the biggest improvements can be made and suggested if work is ever done on the roof or ceilings, to have the insulation checked at that time. Overall, the inspection was thorough and I was left with a report outlining suggestions to improve energy efficiency in this home.

The fellow who came to scope out the work was on time, pleasant, thorough and very knowledgeable. While he was there, I even asked him for his opinion about other items in the house that might need replacing or need additional insulation (fireplace vent and garage doors) and he opined that they were in as good working order as possible and nothing further should be done. The crew of two were on time, courteous, professional, thorough and neat. We couldn't believe they finished all of that work in less than a day. After they finished, no debris was left behind and all floors were vacuumed, including in the attic. Probably one of the better all around experiences we've ever had.

(IG) sales consultant, a full energy audit, and much-needed upgrades to our home. IG personnel were professional, personable, and very patient with many questions and explanations, both while deciding what work was to be done, while on the job, and with follow up. The Energy Audit included a blower test to measure the air flow infiltration rate of the whole house, dozens of infrared camera images to pinpoint heat loss, and detailed measurements to form the basis of calculations of energy usage and potential savings. The primary update work was done in 4 days. The basement floor joists were sprayed with foam insulation to block infiltration. New aluminum covered ventilated soffits were installed all around the house. A roof ridge vent was installed. All existing roof vents were sealed or upgraded. About 12-inches of new blown in insulation was added to the attic raising it to R32. The workmanship was excellent, and the finished result was very professional. I work from home, so spent a lot of time observing and asking questions of the work crew. They were always forthcoming and helpful with explanations.

A couple of follow up visits were required. Replacement of a facia board on the garage was overlooked, so a later visit was needed to finish that work. During the foam insulation installation in the basement two small spots were missed. After a couple of missed appointments, they eventually returned to fill in the small missed spots. Part of the cost was offset by rebates from the gas company. In January IG suggested, that a higher rebate could be received by having a furnace inspection and tune-up, so we agreed to that; they scheduled it with their sub-contractor, and it was done in February. Several months later (in August), a small area of the basement foam insulation was discovered to be deteriorated. This was at the spot where a change over between canisters of foam had occurred during installation. They returned and applied new foam to the area at no additional coat.

Overall, we have been pleased with the work and the results. The original energy audit predicted a small annual savings of around $200, of which $11 was attributed to cooling. There has been a vast improvement in comfort, especially in the summer. Based on an analysis of our electric bills, we paid less in the summer of 2012 than 2011, even though it was a

summer, as defined by "cooling degree days". The adjusted cost was 23% less, for a savings of $58, about 5 times what was predicted! I did not do an analysis on heating costs, but suspect the savings might be similar or even greater.
