**over an hour and 40 minutes on the phone just trying to notify them that I was cancelling and switching providers (I was completely paid up, a month in advance);
** transferred to 3 different "specialists";
**placed on hold twice, and disconnected once - total wait times on hold 31 minutes;
**repeated efforts to offer "free" temporary programming to keep me as a customer;
**and bad-mouthing other providers, which I already told them was useless, since the installers were already almost finished installing Direct
**and then, finally, I was told by a rather rude young man that if I really wanted to switch, I would be charged $10.00 ea. for boxes and labeling for each separate piece of equipment (I would need 5 separate boxes for 2 hoppers and 3 joeys),
** OR I could DRIVE to
I told him that I would arrange to send the equipment on my own without their boxes, and he grudgingly agreed that I could do that and gave me the address in
Then, after I told him I would arrange to get the equipment to them myself, without paying their return fees, he told me I'd better do it fast, because they would charge me between $30.00 and $290.00 PER PIECE of equipment if they didn't receive it within 30 days. REALLY?
The retailer/installation company that installed the Dish equipment had already told me that they would take care of sending the equipment back to Dish for me, and had already picked up the equipment (at no expense to me). Then, just moments after my phone conversation with the rude young man from Dish, I received the following email:

You have cancelled your DISH service. Per our conversation, a return fee has been added to your DISH account
for each box required to return your equipment.
We appreciate your business and hope you will consider returning soon.
If you did not intend to cancel or change your mind, please call 800-333-DISH (800-333-3474).
So very frustrating and unnecessary, and a waste of time for me AND for them. What a way to treat customers who have been with them for years. I certainly hope they don't expect any of us to ever use their service again. IF this is even legal, or in the fine print somewhere (I haven't found it), it is extortion and should be exposed. With all the unhappy customers out there right now, they need to be aware of what to expect, and get ready for a fight. I have already spoken to my credit card company, removed my card and withdrawn it from auto pay on their website. It is important to do that BEFORE you notify them that you want to cancel, because they shut down your online access to your account information instantly after you speak with them. Fortunately, I had already pulled the info.
I think a lot of folks would be livid if this happened to them. Very bad, unethical, and possibly illegal practices. I'll leave it to you to check that out.
