Pristine Construction owner Nathan Moses says he found his niche doing high-end kitchen and bath remodels and new construction with an emphasis on personal service. Customers seem to agree, as the company garnered 27 Page of Happiness nominations in the last year.

"With Pristine Construction, I've found a contractor I can trust, who does excellent, beautiful work and gives a lot of personal attention to customers," says member Kate Harrington, who hired the company to remodel two bathrooms. Pristine stayed on budget, she says, despite challenges that included moving a vent in one bathroom, and he finished early.

Besides honoring his estimates and timelines, the licensed general contractor insists his 10 employees do the work instead of subcontractors whenever possible, and visits job sites daily to maintain the highest level of quality. "We're not going to leave the house until the customers are completely happy," Moses says.

Sherman Oaks, Calif., member Tom Trout says the company did a no-hassle bathroom redo for him that surpassed his previous remodeling experiences. "What Pristine promised, Pristine delivered," Trout says.

D&D Electrical Services | Sherman Oaks, Calif.

With her kitchen remodel already under way, Van Nuys, Calif., member Patty Quintana hired Doron Garby, owner of D&D Electrical Services, to prepare an estimate for rewiring the room. "He set to work that day," says Quintana, who liked that the licensed electrician didn't gloss over her preferences.

"I really felt that we were a team making this kitchen perfect for my needs." In addition to installing lighting, Garby - whose company earned 12 Page of Happiness nominations in the last year - positioned outlets where Quintana planned to arrange the toaster oven, microwave and other appliances.

Garby, who started D&D Electrical in May 2009, believes he stands out among competitors with his customized approach, from varying light switch height per individual preference to bringing more juice into a home office to power electronics. He now employs two people full time and two part time, but remains involved in every aspect of his business.

"I never send someone under my name. Never," he says, adding that he's always on-site for jobs. "I'm very picky and you see the results." Still, he defers to customers, and never tries to upsell a client.

"I never argue with the customer, I never fight with the customer, I never cheat the customer," says Garby, whose trustworthy reputation earns him a steady stream of referrals from Angie's List and elsewhere.

"He is as honest as the day is long," says Reseda, Calif., member Michael Scheff, who called Garby when the power went out in his home office. Instead of scheduling a service call, Garby troubleshooted the problem over the phone to save Scheff money, determining he could reset a ground fault electrical outlet in the bathroom next to the office with the push of a red button.

"It fixed the problem," says Scheff, who later hired Garby to repair a nonworking outlet. "I would trust him to do anything," he says.

A Thorough Guy | Placentia, Calif.

Sometimes a name says it all, as with home inspector Mike Okamura's one-man operation, which received 14 Page of Happiness nominations in the last year.

When member Gopal Bhat of Torrance, Calif., arrived one minute late to her appointment with Okamura, he was already atop her roof identifying splits in her shingles. After a thorough sweep of the house, he answered all her questions and provided a detailed report with pictures, which he printed on-site.

"[Okamura] was thorough without a doubt," she says, echoing other members' accounts.

"I make sure everything is pointed out and let the client decide what's important to them and their family," says Okamura, who started his business in 2001 and isn't required to be licensed in California. "I just love ... giving them useful information."

National Plumbing | Van Nuys, Calif.

From wearing shoe covers to being straightforward with customers, National Plumbing owner Tony Sarkisyan follows a simple, familiar rule: "I treat people like I want to be treated," he says.

Founded in 2007, National Plumbing pooled 11 Page of Happiness nominations in the last year from members such as Mary Griffith of Toluca Lake, Calif., who hired the company to change a shower cartridge and troubleshoot a toilet leak.

"I am a big fan," says Griffith, noting Sarkisyan was prompt, polite and didn't pressure her. "We finally have a plumber we love," she says.

"We appreciate every customer we get," says Sarkisyan, a licensed plumber whose company installs tankless water heaters upon request. "They're very energy efficient," he says. With all services, Sarkisyan says he's careful not to sell customers anything they don't want.
