"I had to call repair person myself. They did not call me for 3 days, then I had to wait 2 days for an appt. would not use the appliance repair person they recommended again

-fredia H.

"They sent 2 people out. One man said he had fixed it but he broke a part. They said the system was installed improperly. We asked him if it's fixable and" he said it was. We didn't hear from them. AHS said they were not liable for it. The system was 18 years old. We needed heat so we had another company install the system and we paid for it ourselves. When they installed the new furnace it was installed the same was which was the only way it could be done in our circumstances. We are not sure if we are going to continue to use them.

It's important to carefully review the components of a home warranty plan before you sign a contract.(Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Maggie T. of Vienna, Va.)

7 components of a good home warranty

Home warranty companies are the number one most complained about category on Angie’s List. If you decide to purchase a warranty, look for the components of a good home warranty before signing the contract.

Home warranties

Year after year home warranty companies have topped the Angie's List most complained about category list, with nearly half of member reports in this category rating these companies unfavorably. The key behind this appears to be an expectations gap between the companies and their clients regarding what is covered and whether service calls on covered items are entirely free.

A home warranty is a good marketing tool for a home seller. Before you offer one to a potential homebuyer, make sure you do your research on the company.

Home warranties don't always come with the kind of robust protection and security homeowners expect. Here's a quick breakdown on the real costs, and real benefits, of purchasing a warranty for your home.

A home warranty, or home service contract, provides service, repair or replacement on a home’s major systems and appliances for a usual term of one year. They've also topped our list of most-complained about categories for three years running.

Angie's Answers

First, call your insurance company and tell them you do not want any proceeds paid to the contractor under your policy as you are not going with them.  This way they can not collect money on your behalf.  Insurance will typically have you sign a form for release of funds anyway but this is a good extra step to make sure your signature isn't forged.  Second, call the contractor and tell them you will not be needing their services afterall.  Did your husband pay a deposit?  If so it may be non-refundable.  Then follow up with a certified letter.

An email as well doesn't hurt but some states don't yet recognize email as a form of communication for legally binding documentation.  This may have changed and I'm sure more states do recognize them as I haven't followed that topic elsewhere as much as I used to.  The contractor's office should be local.  A sure fire way to ensure they got the message is to deliver the letter to the office of the contractor and have someone at the office sign a duplicate stating it has been recieved and read.  There's no arguing whether they received it or not by doing that.

Hopefully you've learned your lesson about high pressure sales techniques and storm chasers looking for a quick buck.  Some people find out a much harder way.  While these guys may be legitimate you should always do your homework on a contractor before signing the contract.  Unless you have water running out of the house and the work has to be done on the spot it's not so much of an emergency that it can't wait until the next day.

Home Warranty reviews in Orange

I have had
Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
for about six or seven years and seldom used them. I read where people said it was a scam, but my wife did not want to cancel our contract. This past year I had an outside water line leak and AHS repaired it. The repair was a major job--estimates I received were around $4-5,000--but by using AHS I paid only a small charge of less than $200. The contractor was very professional and did a good job. A few months later my furnace died and I decided to replace my entire HVAC system. I called AHS but did not go with their contractor. AHS, however, then called and sent me a check for part of the replacement. It was not a lot but it helped with the final bill. I am glad I never cancelled the contract.
- John H.

The contractors are not the best. Customer service is poor and very slow. This company is about making money and not about providing service.

Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
is a great company. I have used them several times for appliance repairs and they are always unbelievably responsive.
This was the first time they advised that it did not pay to fix my microwave. They called and sent a letter to let me know to go get a new one and they will reimburse me up to $250. Once I sent them the receipt I received the check within 2 weeks.
I recommend them to all my friends and feel this is a great service to have in your home.
They are very nice and a pleasure to deal with.

The following is a review of the contractor sent to me by
Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
. Please go to the final paragraph to get my assessment of AHS. Suffice it to say, I cancelled my contract with
Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
the day after this contractor came to my house. When I called to cancel, my call was sent to "Customer Retention." There was NO way AHS was going to retain me as a customer. Quality - or lack thereof - tells. This plumber was dispatched to my rental home through
Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
(a home warranty company) to deal with two toilet back-ups. After initially saying they would come in FOUR days, (they called Thursday and said they would come Monday,) I prevailed upon them to show up the day they called. To their credit, they did show up promptly. However, my tenant, who dealt with them, reported that they came off as unprofessional and lackadaisical in attitude. When I was told what needed to be done, (having spoken to the plumbers,) which was outside the scope of what AHS covers, they quoted me a price of about $825 for work on two toilets. This wouldn't have bothered me quite so much if I hadn't had the same process done with one toilet through another, INDEPENDENT plumber 10 months before, (NOT through AHS, since I bought their policy only last month,) who charged me $295 for ONE toilet. Moreover, my tenant had thought this earlier plumber was superb, efficient, professional and knowledgeable. Please note that the $125 cost listed above was the price for the visit through AHS. So, I am comparing the same work done by "Superior," a plumbing company to which I have given an "F" rating, at approximately $410/toilet to someone who did the same work efficiently, professionally, quickly and courteously for $295/toilet. Not only would I NEVER recommend "Superior," I would certainly share with people my less than ideal experience with them, which I am now doing. (Unfortunately, however, if you use AHS and are reading this review, you are already saddled with them.) The experience was bad enough so that I will be cancelling my contract with AHS, given the quality - or lack thereof - of the contractors with whom they deal, based upon this one situation, which I don't intend to take a
Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
on being repeated in other situations. I'd rather save the AHS funds and use them toward hiring people who are professional and competent and who charge relatively reasonable prices .
- Margaret S.

The problem with AHS is they will not let you use local repair services authorized by the manufacturer. They send someone from far away who tells you the service is not covered. You pay $90 for the call and get nothing. I have yet to get anything from this insurance that was not a hassle to get them to come and then get them to repair the appliance that is insured. If anyone knows a home repair insurance company that LETS YOU CHOOSE THE SERVICE PROVIDER, let me know. Otherwise I think this is insurance you don't need.

Not good at all. They sent several contractors on different days until they found one that was familiar with my HVAC system (
Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
Company, Series V1-B1 Vertical Integral air conditioning/heating system). This required me to be home from work each day. The contractor that was familiar with the system could not fix it but still charged me the $75 co-pay. That was on November 24, 2014. To date,
Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
Home Warranty Co., has not fixed my system. Their website and ads claim that they will repair or replace for the $75 co-pay which is a lie. I chased them for 2 months because they ignored me. Each time that I reached them by telephone they would tell me that they were researching/checking. I finally sent them a certified complaint letter in January to all three of their addresses and under all of their aliases. My letter included an email from the manufacturer listing the contractors in our area that were trained in this system. Now
Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
wants me to pay a co-pay of $3,000.00. Mind you that my heat in my living room and dining room does not work. I had to finally purchase a heater from HSN. I want
Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
to do all of the work for the $75 co-pay that I have already paid. This is my third year with
Orange Home Warranty Companies Provider Name Locked
and although their yearly repair limit for my contract is $15,000 they have only paid roughly $2,000.00 in repairs for me.
- Iris C.

My heater has been not working. Since January, there has been no heat in my home. They have sent repairmen 3 times and nothing has worked. Today they said they would buy me out for $853 so I can go get it fixed on my own. That is unacceptable, no one will touch it for that small amount. I did not agree and am currently waiting on them to still fix the issue.
