Home Remodeling Reviews in Oakland

We started working with Canyon in January 2014 because we were very impressed with
and his professionalism. We are busy and wanted someone who would manage a fairly bog construction project. The initial meetings were good and we hired them to do the design and start an estimate.
They did a good job with the design and had some nice ideas, although it's a pretty straightforward space and design. Then there was no communication at all for a while, except that the person who was communicating with us abruptly left the firm. We then found out that they had had a lot of turnover, with nearly everyone whom we had met earlier having left. That worried us, but we got a decent explanation and continued working on the design with them.
Then after much pushing from us, we got an estimate, which in our opinion was an overestimate. One good thing is the estimate was very detailed. However, Canyon was planning to use subcontractors for almost every aspect of a straightforward finishing project, was charging us to supervise/aid the subs and was charging us both overheads and profits on subcontractor charges as well as on their own labour to supervise the subs. We thought that was double charging and convoluted. They evaded answering any direct questions about the price and we were frustrated enough to stop working with them. As an example, they charged for six person-hours to present-not develop, just present-the estimate to us. Three people came to present it, which we didn't ask for. The charges for that visit seemed excessive to us.
In conclusion, they talk a good game and gave us good plans (no CAD!) for a straightforward project. We thought their price estimate was high and overly padded . They seem to have administrative or other issues since a large number of staff left abruptly in the past couple of months. We will not be working with them in the future.

I do believe
to be a man who takes pride in a job well done.
I do not know what went wrong on my remodel. After 4 months in a rented apartment and another with no kitchen,
the remodel completed … well sort of.
The water and gas plumbing would
not pass city inspection. There was a leak in the wall of the shower, the
shower door leaked and the driveway is cracking in several places. The kitchen
flooring buckled, the transition bathroom thresholds did not match the existing
hardwood flooring, some finishing were left undone and the kitchen electrical
also had a few issues.
had been paid $133,000.00
and was unwilling to fix and complete the work. His conversations became rude,
bullying, manipulative, filled with accusations, and refused to take any
responsibility for the poor workmanship of his subs. I was frustrated,
disappointed and angry my remodel project was not completed a year and a half
after it began. After 6 months of grief and
, I hired a project manager
to communicate with
. Under his direction,
did return and fixed many
issues. For the rest I hired professionals to complete the work to my
acceptance, ( I withheld those costs from final payment).
The remodel finally passed all the final permit inspections.
Due to poor communication, vague
contracts and the lack of drawings; I paid for and got things I did not want
and I didn’t get some things I did want.
A hard lesson learned.

We were very pleased with every aspect of our dealings with
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
. We got a couple of bids for replacing sidewalk and patching the driveway and chose
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
because of both his reasonable price and his helpful suggestions regarding details which had not occurred to us. It was clear that he knew what he was doing. We decided to increase the scope of the job to include a greater section of sidewalk and the entire driveway. In the end, our sidewalk matches in color and texture the existing sidewalk, and we have a beautiful driveway with an added porch step.
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
had great workers and sub-contractors. He was able to muster skilled crews of 2 to 20 depending on the day's task. Along the way,
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
discovered some dry rot, made repairs, and identified the moisture source. He networked with others to see that some of the "urbanite" could be reused. He was easy to get in touch with and responded promptly to every concern. I would definitely recommend

Ofer is one of the best general contractors I have had the pleasure to work with!
The job was done on time and very professionally, great job, thanks.
I would highly recommend.

We initially hired
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
to repair the support structure and pour a new concrete slab for our driveway. After tearing out the driveway, it became obvious that the entire supporting structure needed to be replaced. This resulted in a major change order that was managed very well by
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
. The additional work quoted was necessary and reasonable. Although this resulted in a significant delay to complete the job, this was not unreasonable given the additional work and inspections required.
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
was very responsive to any issues that arose. Now, eight months after the completion of the job, the quality of the work that
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
did is evident in the integrity of the seals on the edges, the joint between the new concrete and the old, the integrity of the decorative fencing that had to be removed and replaced, and in the effectiveness of the drain. We are very pleased with the work done by

I'd like to comment on their customer service throughout the bid process. My mortgage brokers have an awful website to which contractors had to submit their bids;
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
never complained, and always communicated clearly any problems with the bid submission process, and were incredibly responsive and friendly. I can only assume their professionalism, persistence, and friendliness would have persisted throughout the contract, had we been able to move forward.
Hands down the most friendly company I've ever worked with.

I was really happy with the end product, and everyone who works on his team are friendly and courteous and respectful. I was on site the entire time, so I had a lot of interaction with them. The quality of the work was great, and
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
always gave me affordable options for things I wanted to achieve with the project. I felt that I got a fair price for the level of work they delivered.
My one recommendation would be the same for any contractor you work with on a project- when getting a quote, you should work to get as clear a picture as possible of exactly what is included and what is not included. It might help to think through and do some research on the finishes you want (lighting, floors, doors, windows, etc) before talking to contractors. If you have to pay for an itemized quote, I'd say it's worth the trouble and expense. I was a little caught by surprise when some of what I thought I was getting wasn't allowed for in the estimate, and I had to some things myself on top of the initial estimate. Also, the job took twice as long as the estimate. I'm still a happy customer and will give him a call next time we have something we need done.

We hired
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
after interviewing several other contractors. They all looked at the job and suggested either that it was impossible or would require a major renovation.
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
was the only one to talk through all the options, discuss cost versus ideal outcomes and finally, to provide a creative solution. He was responsive all through the process, even as unexpected problems cropped up. He controlled costs and yet provided a spectacular outcome. He and his workers (except for one subcontractor) were punctual, polite, efficient and clean. He obviously trusted his skilled workers but he was also a very on-the site manager. He even worked with me to leave some projects for me to complete (I have delusions of being handy). He stayed entirely within budget and his price was very reasonable for the work. He would be my go-to guy for any home renovation project in the future.

If you are considering hiring
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
, watch out for growing change order prices, project delays, getting milked by subcontractors, lower quality than what’s promised or expected, and if a problem happens, you can expect it to be your fault & your problem, not theirs. We hired
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
in 2012/2013 to do over $130,000 of repairs on our fourplex. We are happy with 85%+ of the work, but there is a good $15,000+ worth of the job where we didn’t get our money’s worth because of either overcharging or under performance on quality. Some examples:
1. A piece of granite cracked and instead of replacing it, they installed in anyway and tried to
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
out the crack.
2. We accepted a change order for a larger scope on two bathrooms, but when the job was done, the price doubled without any new change in scope. To get us to accept higher price, he pulled his crew to a different job which caused delays and problems for us because our renovation funds were coming from a lender with deadlines to complete the work.
3. Painters broke a window during power washing they never fixed
4. Although we had a competing bid for patching & painting the interior for under $10,000, we paid $17,500 to patch & repaint the interior because
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
told us we’d be getting a higher quality paint job, but now we see that was bogus. The painters did a poor job on prep now it shows.
5. They were replacing plumbing lines & although there was plenty of budget to run pipes inside the walls, they chose to go outside telling me the walls were “too crooked” to put the pipes inside. After talking with another plumber, I found out this was BS and they were just taking a shortcut.
6. We paid $800 to sand, prime, & apply two coats of stain to cabinets. Although we weren’t here to see the work, it looks like no more than a once over with stain spray from a can.
7. His painter didn’t prep the porch properly before painting and now the porch looks like a splotchy mess. Painter denies responsibility & credit offered by contractor was negligible compared to cost to fix.
We gave him an opportunity to right the wrong and instead he ignores our calls. Maybe you can expect something different...

I originally met
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
as a volunteer for an organization I work for, repairing homes for free with volunteers for low income seniors. He has done everything you can imagine to help me in this endeavor, I therefore always go to him when I need something that I can pay for as he has impeccable workmanship on every level.
Oakland Remodeling Contractors Provider Name Locked
is competent, timely, neat and tidy on the job site, and can assist with ideas when you are not sure what would be best for your situation.
Overall I cannot recommend him highly enough. And I have numerous times and everyone I have sent him to has the same experiences I have had, we are all very satisfied.
