Best Seattle Contractors of 2011

Blue Ribbon Tree & Landscape | Renton, Wash.

A third-generation logger, owner Andy Anderson says he embraces the values his father and grandfather taught him. "I was trained to do the right thing, even if it costs you money," he says.

The three-time Super Service Award winner, whose work doesn't require a license, is a certified arborist. Teddi Edington of Renton appreciated his knowledge when she hired Blue Ribbon to perform a clean-out on a Scotch pine tree that had a Japanese maple tree growing underneath it.

"The job required a lift and significant expertise, but they managed to do a good job without causing damage to the maple," Edington says.

Blue Ribbon also exhibited great care on Sammamish member Glenn Fourie's job to remove three large trees between his house and a neighbor's. "This required delicate execution to ensure there was no damage to either house," he says, in nominating the company for a Page of Happiness. "Both my neighbor and myself were thoroughly impressed."

Blue Ribbon, which recycles everything they cut, also sponsors youth baseball teams and provides Christmas trees to Boy Scouts.

Switch Electric | Marysville, Wash.

Switch Electric refused to let a few rocks get in the way while doing a job for member Lynn Segleau of Woodinville. "We live on the base of an old glacier," she says. "The soil gets rocky within an inch or two of the ground. They dug a trench for electrical service wires by hand, in spite of that."

She'd hired Switch to install electrical service to a garden shed, a post light near her driveway and a chandelier inside the home. "They are very intelligent, quiet and listen carefully to what you want," she says. "They understand exactly what the customer wants and makes sure they get what they want."

Owner Tyler Keezer says he's used that approach to help build his company's reputation quickly. Although he started Switch Electric two years ago, he brings about 12 years of experience as an electrician to the market, getting his first full-time job at age 19.

"We're not so focused on profit that we let that get in the way of making the customer happy," he says. "We're always available and always listen to all of their concerns and questions."

The company, which includes two full-time employees, is EPA lead-safe certified and licensed to do electrical work in the Seattle area. Keezer says he and his employees focus on providing good communication.

"We never leave them in the dark about anything," he says. "Several of our customers tell us they hired us because we were the ones who returned their calls the quickest."

Marysville member Anthony Poiesz says he marveled at the company's speed, attitude and helpfulness when he hired them to install a projector with a drop-down screen as part of a home theater system.

"They were flying; the whole job probably took about six hours," he says. "They gave great free advice, and options if I wanted upgrades later. They stayed positive the whole time. You don't get that all the time."

Bill's Lock & Key | Seattle

Ed Conroy of Seattle hired licensed locksmith Bill Hollman to replace his garage door keys, and thought the job was done when he received the new keys. A phone call 10 minutes later told him differently.

"He said he realized he could fix the key so it wouldn't have to be wiggled to work," Conroy says in one of 10 Page of Happiness nominations the company received in the last year. "He apologized and made three more keys for free."

Hollman, a Seattle Best Contractor for the second straight year, also works as a design engineer. "I started this as a hobby business about seven years ago, and it's just grown into a second business for me," he says.

Members say Hollman works well with pets. He also volunteers with Year Up, a local program that helps students work through an accelerated college program.

ASK Duct Services | Issaquah

Mark Bales of Mercer Island says owner Dustin Dell spent more than three hours cleaning every vent and duct in the new home he'd just moved into with his wife and 14-month-old child.

"It's amazing how much dirt and debris get caught in a home's duct system," he says in a Page of Happiness nomination for the company. "Dustin is thorough, communicative, detail-oriented and, by far, offered the best price."

Dell, who's licensed for insulation removal, says he started ASK Duct Services in August 2010. "I was looking for something else to do because my career in the tree business left me with a lot of broken bones," he says.

He also offers free services for families in need.
