"I've called numerous times in the past month and left voice messages about wanting to obtain a quote for installing an engineered field but no one has ever" returned my call. Had my request been tank cleaning, I would've scheduled online, but the nature of my request requires that I speak with someone live. Just today, I submitted an inquiry via their contact form online. Will see how it goes and I'll adjust my rating accordingly. The company was regarded highly by our septic inspector, thus my trying continuously to reach them. Sigh.

"We were extremely pleased with our service from Milty's Septic Service. They were available to come for service the very next day from when I called for service." They were even able to come earlier than we originally expected and they called ahead of time to give us notification that they could be here within 45 minutes. They were very friendly and professional and they did a great job. We highly recommend them.

How To Maintain a Septic System

A contractor describes how to properly maintain your septic system and drain field. Here are five tips to help.

Septic systems

Septic systems are commonly used in rural areas and sometimes in areas not served by a municipal sewage system. Septic systems absorb household sewage and distribute the liquid waste into a designated leach field where natural processes can reclaim it. However, solid wastes and grease must be pumped out of the septic system periodically.

For top performance, you want the landscaping over your septic system to promote drainage and prevent erosion. Grass is ideal for this purpose. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Tracy F. of Dayton, Ohio)

In almost all areas, you have to get a permit from the county or city to rebuild a septic tank or leach field - permit cost typically $150-600, though can reach $2000 in some areas for a new installation. The reason is they will then come out and inspect the installation and review the test results from the civil engineer, from whom a design and soil percolation test and construction inspection report will be required before they issue an operating permit.

If you have a question on the process, the county or city most likely has a permit requirements info sheet on their website describing the process and requirements - googel your locale name combined with a search phrase like this - leach field test

The real reason a permit is required is to be sure an engineer designs the field, that the leach field is designed to match the existing soil conditions, and that it is built to the design so hopefully it will neither break through to the surface, contaminate the groundwater, nor contaminate nearby wells or waterways, thereby creating a public nuisance and health hazard.

The reason for the initial presale infiltration capacity test you had done is to provide some assurance to the buyer that the system is likely to work as needed, at least for the forseeable future, and is based on the number of bedrooms and sometimes number of bathrooms in the house as the basis for estimating the "load" the system is likely to see. There are different tests in different locales - some use a minimal criteria of 3 or 4 gpm flow for 20 minutes, other use the more common design guide of 150gpd (gallons per day) per bedroom in the house- some prorated for a 1 hour period, some far more strict by requiring a 24 hour test. 300 gallons in 45 minutes is an extremely stringent criteria - I would check with the buyilding department that this is right, because this adds up to a rate of 9600 gallon sper day - of about 64 bedrooms worth of capacity ! I am sure I have never ever seen that strict a criteria for a residential (as opposed to resort/ hotel/ commercial) septic system, so I would check that the tester did not somewhere add a zero to the volume to be pumped or something.

Also, returning water is not a viable basis for failing the test - the proper way to conduct a test is to pump the specified amount of water, and verify that the water level at the discharge pipe has returned to the original level by the end of the specified time - usually to the invert (bottom) of the pipe, but generally a conditional or "warning" approval will be given to one that does not raise the water table above the top of the 4" discharge pipe during the test time. You might discuss this with the civil engineer before going ahead with a new leach field construction - to me it sounds like the test may have been rigged to fail,, because in-service leach fields would not take 300 gallons of water without raising the water level to the top of the pipe for a period, even though they could take that flow for an extended period ot time.

I would guess that the wrong term was used to describe your problem. What was probably meant was that the leach field was saturated. This is to say that the soil around your leach field is saturated with solids from the septic tank and you may have to have it replaced. If you do not have the tank pumped often enough this can happen as well as just aging of the system. Many people ignore the septic till there is a problem do to out of sight out of mind or the false belief they are saving money. If you have a large family you may have to have the tank pumped every 2 or three years. Some of the towns around here have passed laws to that effect to avoid such problems.

There should be no growth other than grass on your leach field - for brush, bushes or trees use the kill-all Roundup herbicide to kill off the entire plant. For roots intruding from outside the leach field, use a root killer like RootX once or twice a year - I would do two treatments a month apart initially if you have root problems. Unfortunately, just killing the roots is not going to solve the problem you currently have, because they decay extremely slowly or not at all in a leach field due to the saturated and greasy conditions - they are almost embalmed in the sludge. If you have a significant problem, you may have to kill them, then get them routed out. This can be a $500-1000 job depending on how your field is designed and how accessible the inlets of the field distribution pipes are.

Looked up local septic cleaning companies on Angie's List and found two I was comfortable calling based on the reviews. Called one and left my number with the receptionist who said that the owner would call me back soon. I didn't hear back from anyone, so I called the other company on my list (

). The owner answered and I explained that I thought it may be time for our septic tank to be cleaned and I was wanting to to take care of it before anything may become an issue. He asked if I knew how long it had been and I told him that it was at least since 2006, but it was possible that it hadn't been cleaned since the 90's. He said that it was a good idea to have it cleaned at this point, so he got my information and said that, due to my location, they could arrive to start within 30 minutes (they were only 15 minutes away from my location when I called, and they had a window of time between their current job and the next one). Since I've never had to have this kind of work done before, I asked what to expect regarding the digging in the yard. I believe he said they would be digging two 2'x2' holes and then fill them back in once they were finished. They arrived when he said they would, dug their holes, he called me to flush both toilets so he could check things out (since I wasn't outside with them when they were doing the work), then they got to the pumping. I didn't see exactly how all that was done since I wasn't outside with them, but I think they were done in less than 15 minutes from that point. Easy peasy. He called me when they were finished, I went out to pay him, and he gave me feedback regarding how things looked (sounded like even though everything was good, it was in fact a good time to go ahead and have it cleaned due to the amount of solid waste). He did ask follow-up questions to make sure there hadn't been any backups or anything (sounded like he was doing his due diligence to make sure there weren't any issues of which he should be aware). Then he went over and beyond by spending what seemed like another 10-15 minutes answering some questions I had regarding the drain lines and the rules for building structures near them. He even called a contact with the appropriate local gov't department to verify that what he told me was correct. Very professional, nice guy. Based on this experience, I highly recommend

They couldn't get the lid back out. They took no responsibility for this. Now, I have to buy a new lid for my septic tank. He charged me for 2 hours because he spent an extra hour trying to get the lid out. It was his error and he charged me for an additional hour.

OK. It was a blistering hot day so the technician wasn't pleased to have to dig up the tank lid. Mine sits a foot or so under ground. It appeared the alarm switch needed to be rescued and he did that. I asked him to go ahead and pump the tank while he was here. He wasn't too thrilled to do that but did it. I had to call them back out for the same issue on 6/22. He re secured the switch again. I have had no further problems with it. I was not pleased I had to pay a second service call fee for them to redo the work. Technician was pleasant and worked hard even though it was a very hot day.

Went great - came out the same day which is huge when you have a septic emergency. Didn't gouge on price or feed on my desperation. Explained clearly what they needed to do. Price for emptying the drain field was comparable to other companies ($275). They were working hard in 95 degree weather - and then continued working hard in the middle of a Florida thunderstorm to get my mom's house back up and running. They dug a few holes and took extra care to put the grass back on top after they were done. It looks like they were never there. Incredible service, kindness, and professionalism!

Service Tech showed up EARLY!! Performed service with no hesitation and NO upcharges. Cleaned up after himself and left with hose running in aeration tank to refill it. Necessary with a aerobic system to prevent damage to air pump. Gave explicit instructions a to how long to let hose run and how to turn system back on when tank was partially full to avoid pump damage. Highly recommended - Would use again..

We have had a terrible experience with this Advanced Septic and Drainage. Shortly after installation we noticed that the drain field began to seep water up to the surface and create a large hole in the ground. We have attempted to get the owner to come out and figure out what is wrong for many months. He has indicated on many, many occasion's that he would come out and look at our system, but he never shows up. The one time that he sent his son out to look at our problem, he simply dug out the area where water was boiling up and indicated that the drain field was very wet, and that his father (the owner) would be out the next business day to evaluate the problem. Of course, he did not show, then the next day when we called he indicated that he would be out that day. Again, no show. There were many, many times when he promised to come look at the problems, and would then not show up. Then always excuses about why he did not show. A real pathological liar. In subsequent phone calls he brushed off the customer service issues, then began to lie about the issues, and the missed appointments, and his handling of the problems. I have never worked with a company that is so deceitful, and now I have to get another, more reputable company out to repair / rework the job correctly. My only recourse now is to pursue the legal channels, which I fully intend to do !

Everything went very well. I got a courtesy call before arrival letting me know that the guys were on the way. The gentlemen that came were great. They quickly found my septic tank and went to work. Given were my septic tank is located, they had to cut away the plantings but did so only after asking me if that was OK. They also put everything back after they were done and cleaned up after themselves. They were done in about an hour.
