"prompt; final product as promised; we were warned the fumes would be strong, but they stayed around longer than expected -- 3 weeks later, the tub is still off-gassing" enough that I'm not comfortable take a long bath in it

"Very nice gentleman. Assured us that the job would out last us! He said at least 25 years. Unfortunately, it lasted a few months. He came back out and did a touch" up but the tub looks like it did when we bought the house 4 years ago. I gave him a $50 tip for coming out. He gladly accepted. So disappointed to spend a lot of money on something that didn't last. It's like the paint wore off! We used the cleaners he recommended and the old, ugly tub has returned.

Bathtub refinishing

Over time, the bathtub can begin to show signs of wear with stains, scratches, a dull finish or other ugly marks. Bathtub refinishing is an option that can return a bathtub or shower enclosure to like-new appearance.

OK - terminology issue here. The "shower pan" is a collection liner than underlies the shower floor itself, and is designed (if built and plumbed right) to trap any leakage from the shower floor and route it to the same floor drain pipe. Example image here, copper in this case -

It sounds like your are saying the shower floor or base unit failed - likely a fiberglass or plastic shower, which commonly fail due to incomplete support under them. This can be repaired if fiberglass, but is not usually done unless just microcracking, as it is hard to find an expert - usually you have to have a car body fiberglass specialist or a surfboard repair expert do it, and the color will not match perfectly unless you get a new gelcoat over the entire base unit. Cost about $300-500, ASSUMING the material can be repaired - true fiberglass can, thermoplastic can sometimes be welded but anyone's guess how long it will last without cracking again, plastics like PVC can rarely be fixed so they will hold someone standing on them. Any sort of repair is likely to crack again, because you have done nothing to remove the cause of the cracking which is standing on a base that is not fully supported over its full extent. Some cheepo or desperate plumbers try injecting non-pressuring type expanding foam underneath to improve the support - this does a great job of supporting it but unfortunately supports mold, so starts stinking in short order as a rule.

The normal fix is to remove and replace it, because once it is out there is no sense in putting a damaged one back in for the small increment in cost. Removing it means taking the shower wall liners or the bottom row or two of tile out so you can get the new base unit into place (because they overlap it), then replacing them. So, the $3000 range indicated is indicative of this type of job, which typically runs from a very low of around $1500-2000 for an identical base unit, to more typically $3-5,000 depending on whether a shower enclosure or tile walls. Of course, when the new one is put in, it is CRITICAL that it be fully supported - this means rubbing plumbers rouge or similar marking substance on the bottom, test fitting it, and then lifting it out and checking that all the stiffener ribs and support pads made contact with the pan, and making adjusments as necessary until it has full contact, then standing in it and rocking back and forth to check for any points not making full contat and fixing them.

The $10,000 plus numbers you got must have been for entire shower replacement down to the joists and studs, and the $30,000 range number would be typical for a full bathroom remodel with new shower or shower/tub and doors and surround, wall finishes, vanity, sink, toilet, and flooring and door.

Called prior to purchase to ask if he could do the job. I told him that there was a rusted thru area ..about an inch and could pay for patching if he could do that. I was told that was no problem and could be patched. I purchased the deal and called and left a message that I needed to set an appointment. It was a very long time until he called me back and then longer for an appointment to be set. I took off work to get home to meet him at the specified time...he was over an hour late and when he showed up ..he took one look at tub and said he could not patch the area. He refused the job and left. I had purchased the special months ago...as he could not be gotten a hold of for over a month or more...I had to call Angies list customer service who backed me 100 percent and refunded my price...thank you ...and advised the contractor could not pick and choose jobs...which is what he did. I give thanks to Angies list for refunding my cost outside the time frame due to the contractors backing out. don't know what his work is like, but unless you have a perfectly pristine tub I would not purchase until he is at your door....or better still agrees to do the work on site. Be prepared for a long wait and for late arrivals. Angies customer service said he probably didn't want to do the extra work on this job even tho I was upfront on the phone and even said I would pay extra for the patching. This could just be the one contractor for this service, and other individuals could be more reliable and truthful. I would be careful if you really want to work done and make sure your refund date for the special does not run past the day he sets you up for

arrived on time. The job was going to be a 2-day job (not the quick 2-3 hr. same day that some other companies do). Cleaned the bathtub and said that we did not need to refinish because the tub was in such good condition. He said that he could go ahead and refinish if that is what we wanted but if it were in his house he would not refinish at this time. He also said if we change our mind and decide to refinish he would come back and deduct the amount paid from the total cost. He told me that the charge for today was $35. He drove all the way from Lewisville. I told him that would not even pay for the gas for the round trip and I paid him more. How often do you come across a contractor/service repair technician that honest and forthright. He was very professional and friendly. If you need your tub refinished, do not bother checking around, just call this company. You will not be disappointed.

The tub looks spectacular. I had attempted to use a consumer product to refinish the tub myself and despite my best efforts to follow the instructions to a T, the tub started badly peeling in a months time.
El Cajon, Bathtub Refinishers Provider Name Locked
responded to my call right away and booked his soonest available appointment.

The work was done quickly and at the time he said he would be there, and the tub looks like a brand new tub!

I'm exceedingly happy and would recommend

Thanks!
