"My experience with
was great.
responded right away and let me know when he would be able to come out to take a look." We were renovating our condo and were running out of time. The walls in our living room had had wood paneling on the bottom half of the walls and textured plaster on the top as well as lots of places where the drywall needed to be patched. We had taken down the paneling and I wanted to get rid of the texture on the walls. While we were at it the ceiling was popcorn and painted over with holes from faux beams that were taken down that I wanted to cover up.
came out on Tuesday morning looked at the the room and gave us a quote right then and there. He said they would be able to come out and get the room done the NEXT DAY! They were by far the cheapest (we had 3 other quotes) and they were able to get it done right away. There was one tough spot by the windows that needed a little extra attention and when I let
know, he was able to get someone out the next day to smooth it over. The room came out great, it was exactly what I was looking for. I would definitely call them again if I need more work done and I would recommend them to anyone.

Drywall and plaster

Knowing how your interior walls are constructed and what they are made of can help you take better care of your home, as well as provide effective maintenance. You can make small repairs yourself, but the more extensive the job the more likely you'll need a drywall repair contractor to make the wall smooth again.

Dear Angie: Who can I hire to remove a popcorn ceiling? How is it done and what will it cost? — Jonathan H. of Woodland Hills, California, and Marcia E. of Altamonte Springs, Florida

Are those small Styrofoam balls on your ceiling bugging you? You can remove them yourself, or hire a drywall pro.

These service providers are your best bet to patch drywall or plaster holes that plumbers, electricians and other service providers may create while working.

Medium-sized holes can be patched in much the same way as smaller holes, but will require a patching kit to ensure a smooth finish. (Photo by Eldon Lindsay)

You may prefer the lived-in look, but a hole in the wall makes your home look a little too lived in. A pro tells how to repair a hole yourself and save money.

Angie's Answers

?
My sister-in-law uses brite white toothpaste and rubs it into those small holes. No prep, no sanding.
?

I've used wall liner (it applies like wallpaper only thicker) to cover a multitude of "wall sins" over the years. In my opinion it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. It doesn't look cheap or tacky, it's inexpensive, non-labor intensive and not messy to install.

I used it for the first time about 15 years ago to cover a faux brick tile on my lower kitchen walls that couldn't be removed. It was either tear the wall down or take a chance on $40 worth of wall liner. It did the job beautifully and lasted. Since then I've used it to cover paneling, a badly gouged wall after a kitchen remodel and a wall that looked like a pegboard after floor to ceiling shelving was removed.

Friends and family (and realtors!) have been amazed by the transformation after applying this simple inexpensive product.

?

Remember, you not only have to remove the popcorn texture, but also redo the ceiling in some other texture.

Price will depend on several factors:

1) how much the contractor you choose hates removing popcorn or textured ceilings - some charge $1 or so/SF extra just because they hate it. There are even some who bid total drywall replacement cheaper than removing the popcorn, so you have to first find contractors who are happy to do that work, or your prices will be out of the realistic range

2) if the popcorn predates about 1990, then it could likely have asbestos in it, which doubles or triples the price, and in many cases uncapsulating it with a spray coating and then removing the drywall entirely is actually cheaper than all the protective measures necessary if it is scraped off.

3) whether the popcorn is primarily gypsum and vermiculite (comes off REAL easy) or was the plaster of paris variety, which takes a fair amount of soaking to soften it enough to scrape off

4) what type of finish you are replacing it with - if a textured ceiling, slapcoat, knockdown finish or paneling, not real problem. If you want to go with a perfectly smooth ceiling (generally a bad idea as any variations in the drywall on a ceiling surface really shows up dramatically), then it will demand a lot of care in preparing the scraped surface, and a complete surface drywall compound skim coat to smooth out the scrapes and gouges from the removal process.

5) what underlying conditions are - if there is a lot of furniture to move around (should go to adjacent rooms) or cover and work around, high-quality rug or hardwood floor to super-protect or such, will drive cost up.

I have seen costs run from as low as $0.60/SF to $1.25/SF (for removal only). Generally, remove and recoat with a surface texture of some kind (anything but smooth) and paint will run you about $2.50-3.50/SF.

Now the bad news - if asbestos containing, can run from $5-10/SF. Many homeowners in that situation go the other legal route - have it encapsulated with an asbestos-rated sealant by an asbestos contractor, then paint it and leave it for the next homeowner to decide what to do about it. Some contractors encapsulate it and then put a 1/4" thick drywall layer over it - this usually looks like a disaster unless it has a VERY rough textured finish on it, because putting drywall sheet over a rough surface like popcorn invariably means a wavy surface commonly looks like a gently rolling ocean surface.

It did not go great. It took two days to receive a response from this company after I first made contact on Angie's list. I was a little surprised, but went ahead and scheduled an appointment once they contacted me.
Vail Drywall Contractors Provider Name Locked
came out the following day to look at the bathroom repairs & stated he would send me a quote later that day. It has been two weeks and I have yet to hear back. I am assuming our job was too small, although the web site states "No job too small". We ultimately contacted The Handyman Connection, who came out & completed the job within two days of contact. We decided to have the entire bathroom done, which was a $500 job. We are in the midst of a complete remodel of our home & were hoping to build a relationship with a company we can count on for future work.
Vail Drywall Contractors Provider Name Locked
will not be that company, unfortunately.
I will say
Vail Drywall Contractors Provider Name Locked
was professional in my short experience with him & also arrived on time. As a courtesy, I would have appreciated a quick phone call to let me know he was unable to complete this particular job. It was the only company I initially called, so I had to scramble to find someone new.

Very professional. Worked quickly and quietly. Distributed crew well so that multiple jobs could take place at one time. Did a great job of cleaning up. Having a problem in another area of home and they were willing to give directions on how they would suggest the spot be fixed. Showed up on scheduled dates. Charged exactly what was expected from the quote - no surprises. Would have given perfect score but was usually 30 minutes late from scheduled time due to traffic or having to pick up material. More like an A- than a B. Did always call to let us know they would be late. We would recommend them and would use them again.

(owner-operator) and his guys were fantastic. They did a flawless job with the work, even managing not to crack any of the precariously placed shower tiles when they replaced the wall surrounding them. They completed the job from A to Z--
Vail Drywall Contractors Provider Name Locked
repair to fresh paint--with no issues. They submitted the necessary insurance certificates to my condo association quickly and correctly, and completed the entire job in 2 days (including a Saturday). They were probably the easiest contractors I've ever worked with.
Vail Drywall Contractors Provider Name Locked
was truly a pleasure to work with and I wouldn't hesitate to call him for any future jobs.

Even prior to the appointment, they were very good at keeping in touch and communicating. Very responsive and a pleasure to work with early, even for my very small job.
The team was there early and quickly identified and explained what they needed to do, how long it would take and what would be the next steps (i.e. how to paint, how long to wait, what are possible risks in the job that could complicate the plan)
Things went well, they were able to fix the problem, overcome some of the complications they found and the new patch looks great. All within the time budge.
Very good work from them.

came and taped everything off. He showed up on time and was likable. He did the work and came back to apply a second coat. I paid him for what appeared to be a completed job. I called him back and told him the patch job was not smooth and he stated it had shrunk and to call him on Monday to set up an appointment to to complete the job properly.
I have since called him about 15 times, sent text messages, and left several voice mails to call me back. I never heard from him.
I would not use him again and if I did I would not pay him until I was sure the job was finished. I do not like writing this negative review but I do not like this level of unprofessional-ism.

I called
Vail Drywall Contractors Provider Name Locked
to request an estimate on doing drywall and woodwork in a small bedroom in my house. I left a message and
Vail Drywall Contractors Provider Name Locked
returned my call the same day. He was very pleasant and courteous on the phone and we set up an appointment for them to come look at the room two days later.
Vail Drywall Contractors Provider Name Locked
showed up right on time to look at the room. He was also very pleasant to deal with, and he gave me a very honest assessment of the situation, pointing out that based on the current state of the walls (paneling over wallpaper over plaster) he was guessing that taking down the paneling might be opening a can of worms that I could be sorry we opened. I was really appreciative of the fact that
Vail Drywall Contractors Provider Name Locked
seemed more concerned with giving me the best advice than he was with getting the job! I would definitely call
Vail Drywall Contractors Provider Name Locked
again if and when I need similar work done in my house. Thanks guys!
