"Do yourself a favor and call
. Despite US being late to our home consultation appointment -
was extremely professional," informative and zero pressure. I've had an alarm system in different homes for over twenty years with numerous providers. Hands down,
was the most upfront and one of the more competitive priced providers out there! Installation with Nick was equally impressive. Professionalism in spades. Thank you
and Nick for a great experience (in what traditionally is a painful process of switching providers)!

"
, the technician, arrived within the specified window. He was courteous, meticulous and knowledgeable. Although the job took much longer" than he anticipated, he communicated with me and was extremely helpful. My husband and I were doing some work of our own around the house, when our drill broke he graciously offered to lend us his. We have used
on our previous home - our experiences with them have always been top-notch & extremely responsive.

Should I install security cameras?

Highly rated Angie's List service providers list the pros and cons of home security camera surveillance systems.

Look for a home security company that makes your family's safety a top priority, says Perez. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Gregory P. of New York)

Angie's Answers

?
I second the original question (still unanswered). Speaking as someone who logged in today to try to find an attorney, I see this category as one that's exactly what I have my Angie's List membership for:

1. It's important that I find a good one
2. I'm not an expert enough to know myself who is a good one
3. The industry is full of advertisements and misinformation
4. I wish I knew what experiences other people have had

?
I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

?
I'm not sure Angie et. al. want you to have a complete answer to this question. By re-subscribing at the Indiana State Fair in 2012, I think I paid $20.00 per year for a multi- year subscription. Maybe even less. At the other extreme--and I hope my memory isn't faulty about this--I think the price, for my area, for ONE year was an outrageous $70.00. And they debited me automatically without warning. I had to opt out of that automatic charge. I like Angie's List, but if some of the companies they monitor behaved the way they do in this respect, they'd be on some sort of Pages of Unhappiness. I'll be interested to see if this comment gets published or censored out of existence.
?

You have to put your self in the shoes of a business that is in business to turn a profit of some sort. All businesses have different overhead which in turn decides what their bottom line would be on their services. I personally would not go with an unlicensed professional for this type of install. You are messing with gas, venting issues, electrical wiring{electric water heater} and updated code issues such as a drain pan and tempature and relief drain lines for heaters that currently do not have them. I do agree that there are some companies that are way out of line for their installs but most of these companies are the really big companies that have very high overheads  I would assume. Tank type water heaters have changed over the last several years and with these safety changes come bigger prices. The price of steel thanks to China is skyrocketing and tank type water heaters are made of steel. Most wholesale plumbing supply companies cannot match what the big box stores are selling at retail to consumers. I happen to think from research that heaters such as Rheem, Bradford White and AOSmith who have been in business forever make a better product than what you can buy in the big box outlets. You also have to take in consideration the location of the water heater that is being replaced. Is it in the house, basement, garage or attic. Most 40 and 50 gallon water heaters that are purchased in a plumbing wholesale store in Texas cost between 300-340 for a 6 year warranty heater with 6 year on parts and tank. Speaking of warranty. Most big box companies will take a least 24 hours to a week to get your warranty problem taken care of. Most reputable plumbing companies will give same day service if they installed the heater.

So lets break down a typical install at cost to a licensed plumber in Texas

Heater: $315, water shut off $6.50, water flex lines or unions to code $20, gas flex line and cut off to code $12, misc fittings $15, Total $368.50 Lets add a 35% profit which is some what low  for a business $129, Total 497.50

This doesnt  include permits, pan and drain or any venting issues. The vent must go from the heater to the outside of roof using double wall vent.

Cost of permit on average $60

Most plumbing companies allow for 3 hours of time for a water heater. This includes picking the new one up. Delivering out to house. Draining and removing old water heater. Hauling off old heater. Installing new heater up to code. Going down to city and pulling permit.

Average Labor charges for heater installs $400

That would make this install run without extras on any code issues $957.50

I just had a 50 gallon gas water heater installed in my house for $1200 but I needed a pan installed. I used a licensed plumber.

?

That's very difficult to answer without seeing the house. As one poster said, the prep is the most important part. On newer homes that don't have a lot of peeling paint, the prep can be very minimal even as low as a couple or a few hundred dollars for the prep labor.

On a 100 year old home with 12 coats of peeling paint on it, then the prep costs can be very high and can easily exceed 50% of the job's labor cost.

A 2100 sq ft two story home could easily cost $1000 just for the labor to prep for the paint job. That number could climb too. Throw in lots of caullking  or window glazing, and you could be talking a couple or a few hundred dollars more for labor.

Painting that home with one coat of paint and a different color on the trim could run roughly $1000 or more just for labor. Add a second coat  and that could cost close to another $1000 for labor.

For paint, you may need 20 gallons of paint. You can pay from $30-$70 for a gallon of good quality exterior paint. The manufacturer of the paint should be specified in any painting contract. Otherwise, the contractor could bid at a Sherwin-Williams $60 per gallon paint and then paint the house with $35 Valspar and pocket the difference. $25 dollars per gallon times 20 gallons? That's a pretty penny too.

That was the long answer to your question. The short answer is $2000 to $4000 and up, depending upon the amount of prep, the number of coats, the amount of trim, and the paint used.

?
Todd said it best.

An itemized list / cost breakdown, more often than not is used against the contractor when it is shared with other builders who will then beat it.

Good contractors use good people, and good people cost more.  Just the cost of having the appropriate insurance / bond can be the difference between winning a job or losing it ot a 'lower bid'.

It is the rule of three; there is Good, Cheap and Fast.  You can have any two:  Good and Cheap, won't be Fast; Good and Fast, won't be Cheap;  Cheap and Fast, won't be Good!

When comparing bids, it isn't the cheapest or the 'nicest' person you should select.   You should understand why there is a large price difference (it shows there are gaps in your design program or what you have asked for specifically, which means there may be arguments later).  If most of the bids are in line, and one is way high or way low,  you want to know why before dismissing or selecting them.

A price-only decision almost always costs more in the long run.

Good luck!

Hooked up two sensors and they quickly lost connection. One sensor was about 20 ft away from the base and the other was roughly 30 ft away, but neither would hold a signal to the base. The cellphone bluetooth signal also wouldn't stay connected. They gave me a few different suggestions to get a better signal, but I didn't feel those suggestion were necessarily going to address all of my issues. The system didn't give me a good sense of security and I decided to send the system back and request a refund.

The service went well. I also ordered some extra things from them for an additional fee. They got the security system to me in a timely manner. I like the system and it was

was courteous and professional. The replacement was done expeditiously, and the system has functioned normally since then.

He has been our security system and fire alarm systems provider for years. We have always found him to be responsive and prompt. He has often added us on to what was clearly an already full day. He has major suggestions to enhance our security system, and has made major improvements to our fire alarm system, such as the capability to detect carbon monoxide.

He regard him highly, and wish to continue to use his services.

I opened the box (takes about 7 days to get anything from them because they ship FedEx ground from back east - not a big deal) and all door and window sensors were labeled along with the motion sensors and glass break sensor.
I am replacing this wireless company with another company so compare services. Before I called them to activate the service, I installed the control panel, installed the sensors and tacked down the one white wire from the control panel to were the unit is plugged in.
I called them and spent about 2 .5 hours to activate 9 window sensors, 3 door senors, 2 motion sensors and 1 glass beak sensor. Lots of trail and error to get everything to work, adding tape, repositioning sensors etc...
Surprise Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
is professional and patient. They wanted me to move the control panel from it's current location (by the front door) to the middle of the house. I informed the
Surprise Home Security Companies Provider Name Locked
person that I would not move it because that is were I want it and spent the time tacking down the wire so it was neat. We got the system to work. The system was put into trial mode for a week so we could get used to the system
Another week goes by and they call me to inform me that the motion sensor went off at the house during the day and should they dispatch the police? I looked at my app on my phone and it told me that the front door and back door sensors were not affected. I told them not to dispatch them and I would check it out in a few hours. Turns out the double-side sticky tape to the motion sensor came off and the sensor and hit the floor. I screwed the sensor into the wall so that would not happen again.
Two more weeks went by and I get a call for the back master bedroom sensors reported being an issue. I told them not to dispatch the police because the other sensors were still good. Turns out that these 2 sensors are about 80 feet from the control panel (borderline being too far away) so they sent me out 2 long-range sensors (I had to send back the old sensors for free - emailed me the FedEx sticker) that did the trick. We configured the 2 new sensors and I have had no issues since.
I am able to have multiple alarm codes for different people so they can have the code that is easy for them to remember. I use the iphone app daily to see when my wife sets the alarm and can turn the system off from almost anywhere. The control panel is easy to understand and is good for younger and older folks.
The other wireless system did not offer long range sensors so we had more issues with the system.

When the installer came out they tried to charge me about $2,500 and the system wouldn't work, even after coming out three times. Also, I was charged a service fee each time. The smoke alarm in between the living area/dining area wasn't even installed properly into the drywall, it kept falling down. I sent pictures to
