"The work that was done on my driveway was done by Mr.
, the company owner, his son and one other person. They did some of the preparation" work , the patching of holes, and the crack filling a day or so after we filled out the contract and sprayed the sealant the next. Mr.
told me he would
the drive before sealing the driveway to insure that the sealant would reach all of the edges. He did not do this. Another problem with the workmanship is the sealant is not sticking to the drive as it should. Every time I blow the clipping off after mowing chunks on the sealant come flying off. The reason is clearly visible there is dirt that was not cleaned off properly before spraying sealant. I contacted Mr.
by phone twice, once a week or so after the work was done, and again two weeks after that about the problems I was having. He assured me he would take care of it but never called or came out to fix the drive. I fixed and mailed a written letter of complaint to him on 7-21-2015. The work contract was dated 6-18-2015 over a month now and still no repairs. The letter also states that any expenses I have to pay to get the drive edges sealed and the scrapping of loose sealant and underling dirt would be his responsibility. Obviously I would not recommend this company to anyone

"I have waited a year to see how the rest of the paving job has played out. The most important part of this service is the quality of the job; overall, I am not" satisfied. (1) Owner agreed to cut out and remove a section of the driveway that had sunk down; while paving he decided to just pave over the problem area (not what we agreed upon). (2) they got asphalt over much of the lower part of the garage during paving, wiped it off, but it still looked bad. (3) Removed (ground down) part of the existing driveway right in front of the interior concrete garage pad and chipped part of the concrete (not bad, but it did occur). The worst part is that they built up the asphalt driveway too much in front of the interior concrete floor and now when it rains water runs into the garage - and you can't "hose out" the garage with water without much effort to get the water up and over where the asphalt driveway meets the interior concrete garage floor (this really bothers me because I like to keep the garage fairly clean, and water should drain away from garage wall base plates and studs). (4) They used an asphalt mixture that was too coarse and during winter, removing snow was more problematic and some of the larger asphalt pieces "popped out" leaving some small holes that needed to be filled in Spring. I checked with someone at the department of transportation and they agreed that the asphalt mixture was too coarse (probably cost the contractor less money). (5) Several areas (where we had some bad sections on the old driveway) have begun to sink again (not too bad yet) and the subsided areas have been filled in with a driveway patch (not what I expected to do with a driveway that is only one year old); other areas were not entirely level and water ponds in those areas (areas up to about 1.5 feet in diameter). (6) we did have the driveway sealed after paving (as per the suggestion of the contractor) after waiting several months (again, as per the contractor's suggestion). (7) Now, we are seeing small (1/8 to 1/4 inch) linear cracks developing in several areas of the drivway (up to 6 or 7 feet long). These are being filled with crack sealer in preparation for the upcoming winter season. (8) I realize that this line of work is hot and hard, but I cannot say that I am satisfied with the work and would not recommend this contractor to my friends or neighbors.

Post-winter woes: Should I repair or replace my crumbled and cracked driveway?

Experts say the freeze-thaw cycles, precipitation and snow melt products used in winter harm asphalt and concrete driveways.

If the state requires a contractor's license, then he needs to have a license in each state he intends to work in - plus state/local business licenses as applicable.

This does not mean there are not a lot of contractors who cross state lines without proper licensing - the penalties in may cases are not real severe and are just a fine, not criminal, so many take the chance.

As you say - argh  - many contractors are not really businessmen and have zero legal education, so many people get burned.

?

To overlay, with proper adhesion so it does not peel off, you first need to prepare the surface - typically heavy watercutting or sandblasting for concrete over concrete, or high-pressure presure washing and an asphalt (NOT water based cutback) adhesion coat before asphalt overlay.

Because of the prep cost, a concrete overlay commonly costs more than just tearingit out and replacing it, and if you are replacing it due to cracking and breaking up those cracks will almost always propogate or "reflect" through the new layer too with concrete. Ditto with asphalt overlay, though using a crack-stopper fabric can reduce (but usually not eliminate) that.

If just repairing ice melt/freeze thaw deterioration, a cementatious epoxy overlay can be used, though its life is less (normally) than new concrete. Usually used for limited areas like garage area pad, not entire driveways.

Asphalt overlays over somewhat deteriorated concrete can work well, but if not prepared and high-pressure (about 5000 psi or higher) cleaned to remove ALL deteriorated material, they can peel off because they stuck to deteriorated loose material rather than sound concrete. Again, can cost as much for a 1-1/2 to 2 inch overlay as for a 3-4 inch full replacement by the time you are done, because the prep work is labor intensive.

Even if this is just a surficial deterioration issue, I would talk to several contractors (site visit) about alternatives and let them bid both an overlay and a replacement (or whichever options they are inclined to bid on), then after getting opinions from all three and bids for all options, make your decision. I am pretty confident that total replacement will be both the most recommended and the cheapest, at probably about $2-4/SF for asphalt or 4-6/SF for concrete - commonly nearer the lower than higher range for most jobs and locales. If the overlay and replacement cost is pretty close,I would go with the replacement because overlays over concrete are always somewhat iffy as to how long they will last, especially concrete overlays.

For cost comparison, except in extreme freeze-thaw country, you can figure a concrete drive will last about twice as long as an asphalt one.

Was concerned that it was too cold to
Fairhope Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
the driveway in late November but we were assured by
Fairhope Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
that everything would be fine. During the the colder months the driveway raised and crumbled at both ends and crumbling was also noted on the sides and several areas near the top of the driveway. Left a message in February and did not receive a response until we called again in March.
Fairhope Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
came out and said would be better when Seal Coated but would be back out May 14th to evaluate the driveway and was told they would take care of any problems.

was a no show in May and again several messages were left with

and

that were unanswered. After numerous phone calls
Fairhope Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
did come out and evaluate the driveway and again confirmed that the driveway should be Seal Coated. First coating was performed 6/28/15 and multiple areas over the entire driveway were missed. Several message were left with

with no response, contacted

and she said she would get the message to him. Took another call to
Fairhope Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
stating how disappointed we were with the process from the very beginning. After this call
Fairhope Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
did come out to inspect the driveway and agreed the coating should be touched up. While the workers were here on 7/28 we received a call from
Fairhope Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
stating that the areas touched up would be darker in color but all would be evened out next year with the second Seal Coat or we could pay for a second coat this year. Not quite sure why we would pay for an additional Seal Coat when the first one was not placed correctly. The touch up was completed and we now have a driveway that is black with the original seal and the touched up areas are lighter grey.

Ed called me 2 days before and confirmed the date of the driveway sealing. He showed up exactly at 9:00 as promised and proceeded trim all vegetation from the
Fairhope Asphalt Driveway Contractors Provider Name Locked
of my driveway. He and his helper then carefully cleaned the surface of the driveway with a wire broom and air blower. There was a considerable amount of debris that was generated by the extremely powerful air blower and I was curious how he would deal with this mess. I was watching out the window as some of the debris was blown in my neighbor's driveway across the street. He quickly removed this debris back into the street and then managed to blow it all out of the street into my side yard, effectively making it disappear from both my neighbor's driveway and the street. My driveway has never been this clean!
They took a great deal of care in sweeping sand into some of the larger cracks in the driveway and carefully sealed this in place with some sort of crack repair material. There was a small trench that had been cut through the driveway earlier by someone who was repairing a broken electrical wire that had run under the driveway. Ed carefully repaired this with cold patch and a compactor to create a very dense surface. The driveway was then carefully sealed and the driveway was staked to prevent car traffic.
I couldn't be more pleased with the result or the way in which it was done. I would absolutely use them again.

First heavy rain caused asphalt to buckle and huge chunks just washed away. What is left has what look like volcano chimney pushing up from asphalt. Likewise tar and chip area now has trenches where washed away. Pretty much wasted money.

That 2 x 4 foot section of asphalt used to be farther up and square to the side of the road, but has dislodged and washed down. It is now just lying on top of another section of asphalt.
When paving initially completed, the asphalt was a nice flat rectangle along the side of the road as you would expect. Just 60 days later, my neighbors are teasing me that it looks like a moonscape or Hawaiian Islands with volcanos.
There's a guarantee, right? I sent a registered letter to Mr.

We called to see about getting our driveway sealed. The girl that answered was unfriendly and rude. She says we are not taking any more appointments this year, and we are not accepting appointments for next year.
What is the point of having someone like this on Angie' List. They don't accept work this year, or next year, and they are totally unfriendly in telling you so.
Thank God I didn't get into doing any business with them. Doesn't Angie's List do any kind of qualification of contractors they accept? I am wondering why I should continue with Angie's List. Customer service like exhibited here would not be that difficult to determine. My experience is that where the customer service is totally lacking that attitude permeates throughout the organization.

I've explained twice that all I want is to have our driveway seal coated. Having just had a portion of the driveway replaced with brick, I explained that we couldn't afford to have the asphalt replaced at this time. The estimator would only give me an estimate for a tear-out and replacement, saying "sealing or patching at this time may not give you the desired result". I understand that my driveway probably needs to be replaced, but I don't understand why they won't give me an estimate for the work I want done. I'm disappointed.

subcontracted the work to another company who arrived and very poorly addressed my driveway issues. They failed to fill the cracks, filled the potholes with a loose material that immediately began to wash away from the potholes and did not slope the drive away from the house as promised, resulting in standing water at the foundation of the house.
I spoke to

and sent him pictures of the work. He agreed to do the repairs himself and apologized for the poor quality of the work. He then schedule an appointment for follow up, but failed to show up. At this time he is not returning my calls or texts or my requests for a refund.
I had to hire another company to redo the entire driveway.
